The heavy metal handle clicked, pointing straight down.
Audrey’s heart lodged itself in her throat. She instinctively shoved her phone behind her back, her spine slamming against the hard edge of the laminate counter as the breakroom door swung open.
It wasn't Dr. Khalid. It wasn't Damian Vance.
A man stepped into the harsh fluorescent light, immediately closing the door behind him with a soft, deliberate click. He was tall, dressed in a sharp, charcoal-grey bespoke suit that screamed wealth, but unlike Khalid’s elegant aura, this man radiated an aura of pure, predatory coldness. His dark hair was immaculately combed, his features sharp and angular, and his eyes were a dead, unblinking pitch-black behind a pair of silver-rimmed glasses.
He didn't look like a patient, and he certainly didn't look like a doctor. He looked like an executioner in a tailored suit.
"Nurse Audrey," he said. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, low-frequency stillness that made the room feel instantly microscopic. "My name is Julian Cross. I am Mr. Vance’s legal counsel. And his cleaner."
Audrey’s fingers tightened convulsively around her phone behind her back. "The... the breakroom is for hospital staff only, Mr. Cross. If you have questions about Mr. Vance’s legal files, you need to speak with administration."
Julian didn't answer. Instead, he took two slow, measured steps toward her. The absolute silence of his movements was unnatural. He stopped just a few feet away, his dead eyes scanning her pale face, dropping down to her trembling shoulders, and finally tracking the hidden position of her hands behind her back.
"I don't care about administration, Audrey," Julian said smoothly, adjusting the cuff of his shirt. A flash of a heavy, dark luxury watch gleamed under the lights. "I care about variables. And right now, you are the most dangerous variable on this floor."
"I don't know what you're talking about," she whispered, her voice cracking.
"Mr. Vance was admitted Thursday night with severe lacerations. Lacerations caused by structural glass," Julian continued, his tone entirely conversational, as if he were reading a corporate contract. "Ten minutes before he arrived at this ER, a local apartment complex reported a break-in. A third-floor unit. A window shattered from the outside. Your unit, I believe."
Audrey felt the blood drain completely from her face. Her breath hitched. Thursday night. The broken window. Damian.
"Is he... is he the one?" Audrey gasped, the sheer terror spilling over. "Did he break into my home?"
Julian's eyes narrowed slightly behind his glasses, a terrifyingly sharp glint passing through them. "Mr. Vance does not break into apartments, Nurse Audrey. He buys the building and evicts the problem. But Thursday night, someone set a trap for him. Someone who wanted him bleeding. Someone who wanted him right here, in this hospital, under the care of Dr. Khalid."
Julian stepped closer, closing the distance until Audrey could smell the sharp, metallic scent of his expensive cologne. He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping into a chilling whisper.
"You think you're the victim of a lonely stalker, sweetheart. You're not. You are the bait in a very old, very dark war. Dr. Khalid didn't assign you to Room 304 to protect you. He assigned you there to see if Damian would bleed out in front of you."
Audrey’s mind fractured under the weight of his words. The split-screen photo on her phone burned against her palm. Choose who dies first.
Before she could process the horror, Julian reached out. His movement was lightning fast. His long, gloved fingers wrapped firmly around her wrist, pulling her hand out from behind her back.
He didn't hurt her, but his grip was like a steel vise. His pitch-black eyes dropped to her phone screen, which was still illuminated, displaying the terrifying collage and the text message from the stalker.
Julian stared at the screen for a long, agonizing beat.
A slow, dark, and genuinely unsettling smile tugged at the corner of Julian's lips. He didn't look shocked. He looked amused.
"Well," Julian murmured, lifting his eyes to meet her terrified amber ones. "It seems the shadow has excellent timing. But he made a mistake."
"A mistake?" Audrey choked out.
"He thinks he's the only monster in the room," Julian whispered, slowly releasing her wrist. He tapped the glass of her phone screen right over the image of Dr. Khalid. "Tell him you choose the doctor. Tell him to take Khalid out first."
Audrey stared at him, bewildered and terrified. "Why would I do that?"
Julian leaned in closer, his breath cold against her ear. "Because if the shadow doesn't kill Khalid by the morning... I will. And I’d hate to steal another man's hard work.”
