Chapter 6: Crossfire

530 Words
Audrey’s breath hitched, her fingers hovering over the tray of sterile gauze. She stared at Damian, trying to read the icy gray depths of his eyes. The silver badge. The gentle hands. The clues were staring her right in the face, but before she could force her voice to demand an answer, the heavy wooden door of Room 304 swung open. "Is there a problem in here?" The voice was sharp, cutting through the thick tension of the room like a scalpel. Dr. Khalid stood in the doorway. He had stripped off his tailored coat, now wearing his crisp navy blue hospital scrubs. His expression was completely blank, but his eyes were hard as flint as they swept from Audrey’s pale face to Damian Vance. Audrey felt a sudden, bizarre wave of relief, stepping back from Damian’s imposing frame. "Dr. Khalid. I was just about to take Mr. Vance’s vitals and check his dressings." "I'll handle the dressings myself, Nurse Audrey," Khalid said smoothly, stepping into the room. His posture was rigid, his shoulders back as he closed the distance. He didn't look like a doctor checking on a patient; he looked like a man marking his territory. "You can log the blood pressure and leave us." Damian didn't flinch. Instead, his slow, mocking smile returned. He turned his body slightly, intentionally placing himself between Khalid and Audrey. "There's no need to trouble yourself, Doctor," Damian said, his rich baritone dripping with casual arrogance. "Nurse Audrey was doing a fantastic job. Besides, I find her presence... incredibly soothing. Surely you don't mind sharing your best staff?" Khalid stopped just two feet away from Damian. Though Damian was slightly broader, Khalid matched him in height, staring down the billionaire with absolute calm. "Mr. Vance, as your attending surgeon, your comfort is my priority. But as the head of this trauma unit, the safety and assignment of my nursing staff is my discretion," Khalid replied, his voice dropping into a dangerously low, controlled register. He looked down at Damian’s bandaged arm. "We wouldn't want any complications with that laceration, would we? It would be a shame if those expensive hands of yours were permanently damaged." The hidden meaning behind Khalid’s words hit Audrey like a physical blow. “If he looks at you like that again... I’ll ensure his surgical hands never hold a scalpel again.” That was what the stalker had said about Khalid. But here was Khalid, flipping the threat right back at Damian. Damian’s icy gray eyes narrowed, the amusement vanishing from his face, replaced by a cold, predatory stillness. "My hands are perfectly fine, Dr. Khalid. I always finish what I start. No matter what obstacles get in my way." The two men stood chest-to-chest in the silver moonlight, the hostility between them so thick it was suffocating. Audrey stood frozen by the bedside table, her gaze darting between the surgeon and the patient. They weren't just talking about medical care. They both knew about the threats. They both knew about the shadow script. And she was caught right in the middle.
