Chapter 14

1015 Words
Jael didn’t sleep, he stayed awake watching over Kira as she slept. This time, to his relief, she didn’t thrash around uncomfortably. He remained in his watch position for a while until he was sure that she was deeply asleep, her breathing deep. Only then did he get to his feet and lumber out the door. Using his teeth to open the door was easier and soon he ended up in the living room. The show that he had been watching was still playing and, for a few minutes, he remained standing in front of the couch. He wouldn’t have come out tonight if Kira had still been unable to sleep peacefully, but now that he was sure that she was fine, he could do all that he wanted. It hadn’t been up to two days since he moved in with ‘Kira’, the sweet female, yet, it felt like they had been together for many weeks. Jael heard Kira every time she encouraged him to shift to his human form and, while he didn’t mind showing her, he was aware that it had been years since he used his human form. Could he even walk right? He didn’t want to trouble her with that because he knew that Kira would take it upon herself to teach him everything. Besides, he was smart enough to know that the moment he shifted to his human form, she would have to take him back to the clinic. For that reason alone, he was willing to remain in his wolf form forever if it meant he could stay with her. Jael also took into consideration the limitations remaining in his werewolf form put on him. He couldn’t follow Kira to places like the market or anywhere in town except maybe the clinic. It meant that he couldn’t look after her during that time, but what if he followed her around in his human form? She wouldn’t notice and he would blend right into the people in town, that way he could keep an eye on her while also securing living with her. After this decision was made, Jael shifted. It came easy to him because shifting was something a werewolf never forgot, it was why the clinic had a hard time dealing with him. The leg warmers that previously fit him like a glove were now loose on his arms and legs. He had snagged his blanket as he was coming out because he knew that human bodies were more susceptible to temperature change. Jael stood unsteadily for a few seconds, wary of taking a step so that he didn’t fall flat on his face. His midnight black hair was long enough to touch his bare shoulders and it was unruly and unbrushed. Piercing blue eyes stared out of an aristocratic face as he contemplated his next move. He wasn’t going to get better at using his human form if he didn’t give it a try, also, Kira could be going to the market again any moment from then. “Ki-Ki-ra…” Jael tried to form words with his lips, it was harder than he thought. He didn’t give up though, “Ki-Kira. Kira. Kira…” He said her name over and over again until he could do it perfectly. It made him grin, his straight white teeth a little too sharp. Jael touched his face when he smiled, it was so strange. Even while he was still in his human form, he never smiled. ‘He didn’t hate it though…’ He thought, trying to smile again. “Kira.” He blurted out of the blue, smiling once more. Now to move around, he wanted to try Kira’s brownies and also find a reflective surface to look at himself in. He had never really cared about his physical appearance before because people hated him no matter what but now he did. Because, what if Kira didn’t like the way he looked? He was also curious to see what he looked like after so many years. Jael took a step forward and immediately fell on all fours, he tried to rise to his feet again but he was so unsteady that he couldn’t manage it. So he gave up and went to the mirror placed at a corner of the living room for decoration, it worked just fine though and he had seen Kira straighten her hair while looking at it when she was leaving for the market. After crawling to the mirror, Jael had to lean heavily against the wall to get to his feet. He managed it somehow and stood on both feet once again, using the wall as support to peer into the mirror. “Oh!” The sound of surprise left him unconsciously. He was pleased with his face! Jael wasn't the kind to be vain about his looks, but he hadn’t been expecting himself to look so handsome. It was good enough for Kira, he decided, dropping down to all fours again to make his way to the kitchen. It was quicker than trying to walk again, he couldn’t make too much noise, what if he woke Kira up? He got to the kitchen and went to the freezer. He knew where the brownies were kept because Kira had explained it to him. He had learned more in the past one and half days than he had during the months he spent with the first female that took him in when the clinic found him. Jael had just been happy to see humans who didn’t try to chase him away or mean him harm. Although he stayed in an outdoor shed with the first female and she didn’t care if he didn’t come back some nights, it was like he still lived in the wild. But with Kira, he felt human again. It was easy for him to shift to his human form, he didn’t even feel threatened. He just wanted to get better at doing things with this body so that he could take care of Kira just like she did for him.
