Chapter 19- RYAN/BUZZ

1307 Words
Chapter 19 Ryan/Buzz I had been working with Dom and the rest of the team for a few weeks now. Dom was owed $45,000. The other 3 were owed $30,000 between them, and then the techs (me and the other guy at $10,000 each time). I had an extra $30K in my account. The last one was going to be done tonight. I couldn’t believe we had managed to get away with it. Dom had also sent an anonymous cheque to Jackson’s ex for $20,000 in unpaid maintenance. He wrote a note telling her where it came from and it wouldn’t be tracked by the police. It was hers to keep. She didn’t know who it came from, but we didn’t care about that. We were just grateful we did something. We were setting up when I started to feel something in the pit of my stomach. Something wasn’t sitting right with me. I was able to hack into the accounts without any problems tonight. I told Dom, but he wasn’t concerned. He made out it was because I was used to the systems and was able to get into them easier. I wasn’t sure, but I had no reason to doubt him, so I carried on. All night, I had that feeling in the pit of my stomach. Something was wrong. My instincts were trying to warn me. I didn’t listen though. Dom had told me what else Jackson had done, the charities he had ignored and bypassed, that he didn’t offer any company benefits, like health insurance. One of his employees had been diagnosed with cancer a few years before. She had to finish working there because she was too sick. She ended up getting into so much debt because she had to pay for the treatments herself. She had been at the company for 30 years. Jackson knew what was happening but he didn’t offer her medical insurance, extra paid leave for treatments, and when she got too bad that she couldn’t work, he accepted her resignation and didn’t even try and help her work around her treatments. The poor woman died last year in hundreds of thousands of debt. Her family now has to pay that. He f*****g deserved everything and more. I had just transferred the details to tech 2, when my cell started ringing. I checked the ID but ignored it when I didn’t recognize the number. I was busy. It rang again a minute later, deciding it must have been something important, I answered it. “Abort! The police have arrested Dom, pack it up, wipe everything. I’ll be in contact when I can.” A woman shouted. I didn’t have a clue who it was. I decided to call Dom, just to make sure it wasn’t a hoax. When his phone went to voicemail, I knew he had been caught. I quickly scrubbed the hard drive and put a remote detonator on it, if anyone tried to access my files, it would cause a small electrical current which would fry everything inside. It was my safety net. I didn’t know if the police knew about me, so I had to make sure I was undetectable. I called a cab to take me downtown, where there were hundreds of trash carts. I wiped down my laptop and cell to remove my fingerprints and covered my hands with latex gloves. I put them in a ziplock bag and then in my backpack. I would take a cab to a restaurant and empty the bag in the nearest trash cart. There would be no more evidence leading them to me. I grabbed my coat and pulled the door open. I jumped back as the man who stood there lunged for me. “Hey, who the f**k are you?” I shouted. “Get the f**k off of me!” “Mr. Cobain, my name is Detective Holgate, and I am with North Carolina Police Department. I need you to come with me. Grab whatever you need and follow me please, if you don’t come willingly, I will slap the cuffs on you and considering the company you work for, I would advise you against struggling. I nodded, accepting my fate. I put the bag down, knowing one of the cops would take it in anyway. Even though they couldn’t get anything, it still didn’t look good. When we arrived, I was led to booking. I had to give my details and then I was led straight to an interview room. Holgate asked if I needed a drink or anything to eat. I declined both. I just wanted to get out of here. I waited for a while until Holgate entered the room again. “Mr. Cobain. So, do you wanna share what you’ve been up to lately?” What is this- a f*****g job interview? “I’ve been working, then ordering take out and crashing into bed every night.” I answered, deliberately missing out what he wanted. “Ah, yes, but how about the extra-curricular activities with a Mr. Travers?” “Never heard of him” He smiled. Really? So when your cell phone was checked, you hadn’t been calling him? Or even spoke to one of his known associates just ten minutes before we arrived at your place?” “Nope.” “Ok.” He smirked. f**k. He had something else. “So how about the details you have been sending over to him in regards to a Tom Jackson?” There it is. f**k! “Don’t know who that is.” “Really? You don’t know your old boss.” I didn’t know what else to do. I was looking guiltier by the second and I hadn’t even done that much. I knew that if I just told him what I knew, it wouldn’t be too bad. Then again, I wasn’t a snitch. I couldn’t do that to Dom. “Yeah I remember the dickweed, but I never met the fuck.” “Ok. I have computer analysists looking into your laptop now. I’m sure we will find something soon enough.” I smirked. No, you f*****g wouldn’t! I sang in my head. He got up and left me in the room. It was a good hour later after he left when he returned. “Very clever Ryan.” He congratulated. “I thought so too.” I agreed. “Ok I want to know what you know. That’s all. As of now, this is what we have; Dominic Travers was an ex-employee of Tom Jackson. Him, as well as his associates, Owen Reed, Tony Elliot and Matthew Bentley. He was unfairly dismissed just weeks before the company went into administration, so he wasn’t given his redundancy pay. Reed, Elliot and Bentley were also a lot shorter on their redundancy pay too. Now there is a Miss Goldsworth, I can’t find a connection between you both though, yet she called you before. “Who?” I wasn’t playing this time; I seriously didn’t have a f*****g clue who he was talking about. “A miss Angela Goldsworth? She was the one who called you before to alert you of Traver’s arrest.” “That was a girl? I thought it was a guy.” I said honestly. “She must have used some technology to disguise her voice- I don’t know. That is beside the point, I want to know your involvement.” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I decided to play dumb again. He sat in silence, watching me before he spoke again. “Ok. You’re free to go.” “What?” I said, shocked. I stared at him, waiting for the catch. “No catch,” he said, as if reading my mind, “we have nothing on you. You’re free to go.” He stood up, and I raised from my chair too. He walked me back to the custody desk, he told me that the police in Ohio had arrested Dom and his associates. They couldn’t find the evidence to arrest Kirsty though, so like me, she was free to go.
