Lucas POV
Alice astounded me. She is a true fighter. Her cunning enabled her to exploit certain situations. I tried to ease up at first, but I soon realized that there was no need because she was intelligent and strong enough to defend herself.
I felt some pride in her.
I noticed her gaze locked on mine while we were on the ground, but I don't experience the same emotions she does. I averted my gaze and focused on gaining the upper hand. Perhaps Kayla has become too close to me. I mean not her but our connection.
I called it a day. In another situation, I would have continued training, but not today. I'll be leaving tomorrow and will have a few things to attend to. I can't lie, I also want to smell the sweet scent of wild berries, which somehow comforts me.
I sincerely wish I could feel something around Alice, some feeling, some connection, but there is none. If she is my fated mate, even though she is missing her wolf, there should be some kind of bond or attraction, but there isn't.
Well, I can't lie, I also want to smell the sweet scent of wild berries, which somehow gives me some comfort.
As I make my way to the Pack House, I am lost in my thoughts. The atmosphere between Alice and me has improved, I won't deny it. I am happy because at least that feeling of strangeness has lightened.
Kayla is waiting for us. My heart beat faster when I saw her. Something twitched inside me—pleasure, need lust.
Her face looks worried, even upset.
Maybe she saw us with Alice and is jealous, Aric speculates with happiness.
"We must talk right now!" Her aura was so powerful that even Aric shuddered. Nothing like this has ever happened before. How is this even possible? She is no longer the queen; she has been deposed. Mia is not that strong. I blink several times, trying to keep up with what's going on.
"Did something occur?" Smith was the first to raise an issue. I can feel his wolf readjusting, just like Alice and me.
"I apologize; I didn't mean to use my command voice." Kayla's brow furrows, indicating that she, too, was taken aback. "We have new information about our situation, and our immediate attention is required," Kayla informs, her body adjusting to her graceful posture and her lovely face rediscovering its seriousness.
My hand instinctively reaches for hers. When her hand touched mine, I felt sparks run through my veins. After I felt the effects, I expected Kayla to remove her hand, but instead, she pressed it into mine, squeezing it slightly as if seeking comfort. My heart raced as our gazes met, and she gave me a small, sad smile, which I returned with the same emotion.
"Let's go to the office then!" I suggested, without letting go of her hand. I don't want to do it.
Kayla doesn't let go of it either. Kayla's gaze was drawn to Alice's. The two exchanged glances. Kayla is sad, and Alice is hurt and angry.
"I'm not taking advantage of Lucas' touch to get closer to him, Alice. I'm just trying to soothe and calm him down. I need it too, his touch, to relax more. Sorry." I felt pain as her words fell like ice rocks. I had hoped for something spontaneous and unplanned, but it turned out to be planned. I remove my hand. The sense of being used has surpassed all comfort.
"I'm sorry Lucas!" Kayla's eyes dimmed as a result of her sadness and the realization of the consequences of her actions on me.
"I understand!" Alice murmurs, still upset, and we all make our way to my office.
I'm hurt... her touch caused me to create expectations, and everything rumbled. Aric's ego is bruised, but we're doing our best to give her the attention she requested while not adding to the confusion.
Even without Melanie and Jacob present, Kaya begins to tell the story. I can't stop myself from growling. Aric goes into hyperdrive, ready to transform at any moment.
We must safeguard the kingdom and Kayla. In my head, Aric growls. No one can take her away from us. Aric is a selfish wolf, we are dealing with something much more than love and a mate bond. And he is only thinking about Kayla.
Jacob and his mate finally joined us, after knocking and receiving permission.
Melanie's eyes were swollen and red. She had clearly been crying. Her hair strands, like her dress, are brown.
"It's not your fault, Melanie! Come off it! We'll figure something out!" Kayla hugged her tenderly. For a moment, we all fell silent. Kayla lets go of Melanie and steps back a little so that she can see us all.
"Rewind to the evening of the ceremony. Please assist me! Maybe we'll be able to figure out who the enemies are and who is loyal to the crown." Her request is perfectly reasonable. We need to figure this out". Her determination and power are incredible. I can´t deny the pride rising in me.
"My father received a letter from Beta Adam informing him that a ceremony would be held to introduce the Queen to all of the werewolves. All high-ranking members and their families were invited in the same letter. Beta Adam emphasized that if the ceremony went ahead, it could benefit the mateless as well." Alice gave us her version, which is identical to mine.
"That is correct." I immediately agreed with what she said.
"Why didn't you attend the ceremony, Lucas? If each pack was required to have at least one representative?" Kayla's curiosity is understandable, but it almost feels like skepticism about my actions. Aric snarled. Kayla's eyes widened, and I could tell she was upset but most of all sad. Her wolf didn't like it when her mate growled at her. And there was some sadness in it.
"I was. We were late leaving the pack due to issues with some corn grinding machinery. An Omega had suffered serious injuries. I didn't want to leave without first double-checking." I was so upset because we were going late. But I needed to do my Alpha duties. I signed in frustration while telling them this.
"Our car broke down halfway to the Kingdom, and it took us hours to get help. We were still a long way away and couldn't make it in time in our wolf form. " I thought every damn option we had, but sadly there was none. My gaze is locked on Kayla and I continue.
"However, by the time we were about to resume our journey, it was already dark. We encountered another car approaching from the opposite direction; it was Alpha Adolfo Fernandez, who informed us that the kingdom had been taken and that there was nothing we could do. Smith and I continued on, despite the information we received. We kept running into other official vehicles, all of which were coming home, and their story was the same." I signed deeply. "We decided to turn around. " I told them everything that had occurred that day.
"The next day, we received an official letter from the new King, stating that he had taken over and would soon be meeting with all the packs." We also received reports from other packs that their official entourage had vanished." It was Smith's turn to share everything he knew.
"If some went missing without a trace, they probably joined the resistance and were killed or imprisoned," Alice says, analyzing facts. "The ones going to their packs, in my opinion, will be our suspects." What Alice says makes perfect sense, even though I am on her list of suspects. I have nothing to hide, but this makes Aric restless.
They don't have any questions about us. Aric tells me to calm down and reassure himself and me. They are only putting the puzzle together.
"But, Alice, your Beta has returned. He notified me via email that you were missing." Smith tells her now, and it's something I didn't even recall.
So how?
Is her pack a part of this?
