Alice POV
The new information has made me nervous. I was not expecting a war for control of the supernatural world.
On the one hand, I was terrified of what lay ahead for us, our families, our packs, and the world in general. Adrenaline, on the other hand, got my brain working and analyzing all the known facts.
How is it that in a war, high-ranking officers return to their packs as if nothing happened? If they didn´t struggle, they could only be involved, or have returned for some reason before the uprising. It stands to reason that those who did not return were the ones who reacted and thus lost their lives or freedom.
"However, your Beta has returned, Alice. He emailed me to let me know you were missing." The data Smith, who is standing against the wall watching us, points out is valid, but there must be another explanation.
"You are correct, Smith, but I believe there must be a reason for this." I sighed and paused, closed my eyes, trying to recall everything that happened that night all over again. Nothing, let alone anything suspicious, comes to mind. My legs are trembling, so I'm probably nervous.
"How did your pack get along with the former King Leon?" Jacob's question drew my attention back to the room. He's sitting next to Melanie. His hand is on her leg, soothing her.
"They were good because my father was devoted to King Leon. In fact, Leon and his late father were always willing to assist him when he needed it." I recall my past, and I decided to tell them all i knew.
"My mother died in an accident when I was six years old. My father, Alpha Vincent, was devastated; he didn't have the strength to run the Pack properly for a while. Lancaster, our Beta, did his best, but my father's decisions were rash, and there came a point when my father was on the verge of losing the Pack and his leadership team." It's difficult to share all this because, in actual fact, it wasn't just the Pack who was affected. I was, too, and at a time when I most needed love and support. I lost my mother and i needed my father, but he was not there for me. He was struggling with his pain, he forgot i had mine too...
"By the time my father realized the problem was a major one, there was little that could be done. My father approached the King who ruled at that time and explained the situation. My father desired to relinquish his position as Alpha, recognizing how he failed his pack. However, King Arthur told him that the humility to admit one's mistakes, a quality worthy of a true leader, was to be valued. For a week, the King stayed with my Pack to help things get back to normal king gave political and economic help. My father and King Arthur struck up a friendship." This was how my Pack was reborn, almost from ashes, as well as improved and progressed into what it is today, a great one.
"My father, like the rest of the Pack, was always grateful to King Arthur. When Leon, I mean King Leon..." I corrected myself, my gaze fixed on Kayla as if begging her to forgive me for my levity in addressing my former King by his proper name.
"Alice, we are past the formalities," she informed me and smiled back, putting me at ease to proceed.
"When King Leon was sworn in as the new King, my father told him that he was ready to assist in any way Leon required. My father reinforced his loyalty, and said he would be there just as King Arthur had been for him." I present the information I have in an attempt to make a point and to ensure that there are no sensitivities to my pack, as we will be visiting it tomorrow.
"I can even tell you that my Father and Leon have some closeness since they used to exchange emails and phone calls frequently."
Lucas' brow arched slightly as he thought about what I was saying to him. He adjusts his body, sitting in his executive chair, in front of us.
"And do you know what they were discussing?" Lucas is the one who is questioning me now. "Unless there is a problem or the relationship is more than a political one, an Alpha does not need to contact the King frequently." What he asks makes perfect sense, but I believe the relationships are more like fraternization, there are no other reasons, none that i know of.
"Lancaster, my Pack´s Beta, has stated several times that the two have a close relationship." That has to be the case. I can´t imagine either of them negotiating with the enemy.
"Leon and the Black Orchid Pack have always gotten along well. Leon always described Alpha Vincent as a person of integrity and one of the few people he could completely trust." Kayla's voice drew Lucas' attention immediately. His entire posture relaxed, and his eyes glowed with emotion. The mate bond indeed blinds you to everything else. I roll my eyes, it's annoying.
"Alice, maybe you shouldn't tell your father about your wolf switch tomorrow." Melanie's advice appeared to be unanimous as everyone nodded and looked at her and me.
"I'm not sure she'll make it. Because she took the blood oath, her human body adopted the Pack as its own. Kayla's wolf, on the other hand, lacks a pack, which explains the mix of smells." Jacob emphasizes the significance of my and Thea´s scents.
"How come I can't tell the truth?" I don't want to deceive or hide what's left of my family, friends, and the werewolves I swore allegiance to, much less without knowing how this will all end.
"Because Thea is there with you. Obviously, all the enemies of the Kingdom will want Kayla and Thea. Telling the truth will make you a target. Even if your father is trustworthy, there is no guarantee that others are not." Melanie's explanation is reasonable. I can't help but agree. Not only is my safety at stake, but if the enemy finds out what is going on, he will know that I am with Lucas, putting his life, the welfare of his pack, and, of course, Kayla in danger.
"I feel I don´t belong here in this room!" Smith exhales a small laugh. We're all looking at him, perplexed. He appears to understand and elaborates on what he is saying quickly. "Have you noticed that everyone here has a Pure Alpha Blood Wolf, except me and Melanie? Do you understand how uncommon this is? There are just four in this room. Lucas, Jacob, Kayla, and Alice." Smith says with amusement while observing us. I never thought about it. He is right. It is rare to find one... 4 altogether, without belonging to the same family. It is almost a miracle.
"Actually, there are four, with Leon being the fifth... Oh my! How come I never deemed that before?" Melanie had her hands over her mouth in surprise, as if she had finally realized what we were missing.
