Chapter 11 - Chuck

351 Words
For someone who is thousands of years old Chuck seems to keep his humor up. Sometimes though he gets lost staring out in the eons of time. His dark chocolate eyes glaze over and you can tell he's thinking about the time he heard Jesus speak or the time when he walked down the Champs-Élysées in Paris just before he fought with Napoleon Bonaparte. He was there when the guillotine was used for the first time and when it was used for the last time. He fought in battles with the Hittites, when Rome was trying to take over Egypt, he saw the fall of the Library of Alexandria, the French revolution, French and Indian War, the American revolution, the Civil War, both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam. He's even seen a little peace. His black hair has the smallest smattering of gray. Which I think makes him look distinguished. His skin is the most beautiful golden brown. Like when toast comes out perfect. I could listen to his stories forever. He's seen and done so much. Everything I learned in the history books, he lived through. It's amazing. With his soothing tone and a voice like butter I could listen to him read the phone book and it would relax me. Sometimes I wonder how many lifetimes he's lived with someone else. How many times did he have to say goodbye to his wife and children. All his loves, all his family, all his friends. Gone. Having to start over every few decades. It's too much. It's too much to bear. The pain he must have gone through. Yet, he kept going. Kept living. Not existing, but living. I don't know if I could have lived 10,000 life times and still even smile. You can tell by the way he talks he loved deeply and wholly and without regret. All those wives and children and he doesn't forget a single one. He has the biggest heart I've ever seen. It seems like he loves everyone and everyone loves him back. I've never loved anyone. No one has ever loved me.
