It was like Aria had been stabbed in her chest. Death would have been a much better fate than what was happening to her.
She could feel so many eyes on her, and her breathing was deep and heavy. Her palms burned from the slap and her heart thundered in her chest.
She felt like everything was happening way too fast.
“No…” Her voice came out as a plea. “Kieran, no. You can’t leave me.” She grabbed his arm as she begged. Tears fell from her eyes and she could not hold them back.
She was angry but she was even more desperate, not wanting to lose the man of her dreams.
“Aria, stop. Please…you’re embarrassing yourself.” He said to her as he removed his arm from her grip.
“But you…you love me,” She said, her voice cracking.
“I—“
“Kieran…” It was Ken’s voice. He joined the conversation. “She’s not worth it.”
Before Aria knew it, she was on her knees.
She didn’t care.
She didn’t care that almost a hundred or more people were watching her. She didn’t care that most of them were recording and some were laughing at her.
“Kieran?” She looked up at him from the stage. “You know…you know that I’m nothing without you. Are you going to throw two years away?” She sobbed the words out. “Just hear me out, okay? I will do anything. I’m sorry I slapped you. Just…just don’t leave me.” Her cries shook her body as she continued to beg.
The man locked eyes with her and so many memories of them being together flooded her mind.
This was not real. Right? It couldn’t be. She begged for it all to just be a silly nightmare.
But the sting and burn in her chest proved otherwise.
“I’m sure you will find someone better,” He said to her before peeling his eyes off her and walking away, leaving her on the floor.
Aria scoffed under her breath. She was so broken. She scoffed again while shaking her head, a sad smile appearing on her lips.
She watched Kieran walk to Sara and they hugged. It all felt like a knife had been placed in her chest and twisted.
She dared to look around and saw everyone looking at her. Some were mocking her and some were just shocked. But most people had pity written all over their faces.
Aria sniffled and wiped her face with the back of her hand before standing to her feet. Then she ran.
She rushed out of the ballroom and down the hallway. Her world had crumbled right before her eyes and all she could do was run.
When she reached outside, the cold air stung her. Tears ran down her face and just would not stop.
She removed her heels and started to run again. “No, no, no,” She repeated like a mantra as she ran down the street.
She just wanted to put enough distance between her and the building. She did not even care and knew where she was going.
She continued and as she barely looked as she suddenly jumped on the road to cross. That was when it happened.
Flashing lights. A loud horn. And a quick and sudden pain hugging her body as she was hit by something hard and dropped to the asphalt road.
It was a car.
She lay there, staring at the clouded night sky as her breaths came in uneven. Then before she knew it, her eyes fluttered close.
Peace. Finally, she felt some peace and had escaped the dark and embarrassing reality that was now her life.
Not knowing how much time had passed, Aria’s eyes fluttered open. She could hear a steady beeping and felt heavy and tired.
Her vision soon cleared and so did the brain fog from sleep. Everything came back to her, hitting her harder than the car that had caused her to be in the hospital right now.
Hot tears freely fell from her eyes and then she heard a voice. It belonged to a man. She looked to her left and saw him.
He was dressed in a very expensive suit and his hair was bright blonde. His eyes were sticking out of my blue and he looked like a model.
But most of all, he looked important.
“Are you…are you okay?” He stood to his feet, worry evident in his eyes. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you. I just—I was tired. And I was distracted. I—“
Aria stared at him. “You were the one who hit me?”
He ran his hand through his hair and nodded. “I will pay any amount you want. I will take care of your hospital bills and will take care of you until you’re better. I swear. I’m just—gosh, I hate myself,” he said the last part to himself. “I’m sorry.”
Aria knew that it was not the guy’s fault. She was the one who had been distracted and had just jumped on the road without looking.
“It’s fine,” She muttered, sniffling.
“No, it’s not.” He was firm when he said this. “Is there anyone you want me to call? I think the hospital already contacted your emergency contacts.”
“What?” Aria furrowed her brows and said this in annoyance. She tried to sit up and groaned in pain as she did. “No.”
“What?”
“No. No, no, no. I don’t want them here,” She said, her voice cracking. She knew that her emergency contacts were only two people. Her mom and Kieran.
And those were the last people on earth she wanted to see right now. She would rather be hit one more time with a car.
“Why?” The guy seemed confused, yet intrigued.
Tears filled Aria’s eyes. “I just don’t want them here. Please.”
Suddenly, a knock sounded at the door and it was Kieran. Just behind him was her mom.
Her blood ran cold and she clenched her fists at her sides. “Leave.” The word barely escaped her mouth.
“Aria, what the hell were you thinking? You could have died!” Kieran ignored her telling him to leave and scolded her.
He took a few steps closer to her. And that was all it took for Aria to crash out. “I said f*cking leave!!!!”
