Chapter Eight ( Bound by shadows)

1202 Words
The ceiling above her blurs as Luna blinks awake. Her body aches, every limb heavy, like she’s been crushed and stretched all at once. Her breath is shallow, her chest rising and falling too fast. The sheets beneath her are soft, but the energy burning inside her is anything but comforting. Where is she? She tries to sit up, but her muscles scream. A soft growl escapes her throat before she can stop it. The door creaks open. Zayn steps in, holding a mug of steaming water. His golden eyes lock on hers immediately, sharp with focus, but there’s something else—concern. A flicker of something only she seems to bring out in him. “You’re awake,” he says. Luna blinks at him. “What… happened?” “You collapsed outside the training grounds,” he replies, setting the mug on the bedside table. “You half-shifted.” Her body tenses. “Did… did anyone see me?” “No,” he says, sitting on the edge of the bed. “Just me.” She looks down at her hands. They look normal now. No claws, no fur. But she remembers it all—her bones stretching, the fire under her skin, the scream that tore out of her like a wild animal breaking free. “I couldn’t control it,” she whispers. “You weren’t meant to,” Zayn says, voice calm. “Your wolf is... different. She doesn’t obey the same rules.” Luna’s heart pounds. “What if I hurt someone next time?” “Then I’ll stop you,” he says, firm. “I’ll protect everyone—including you.” She looks up sharply. “You’d protect me?” His jaw tenses. “Yes.” Luna studies him. He’s still wearing his dark coat, the collar turned up, his hair tousled like he’s been running his fingers through it nonstop. There’s something restrained in his energy—like he’s holding himself back. “Why?” she asks. “Why are you helping me?” Zayn meets her gaze. “Because I think your past and mine are more connected than either of us knows.” He stands and walks to the window. The moon is still high, casting pale light across the room. “You dream of the symbol,” he says. “The crescent and three stars. You felt the pull to this territory. You arrived just as your powers started waking up.” Luna sits up straighter. “You think it’s fate?” “I think,” he turns to her, “that you were sent here. Not by accident, but by the Moon herself.” Silence. Her breath catches in her throat. The Moon Goddess. Luna doesn’t say it out loud, but the thought wraps around her chest like a band, squeezing her lungs. Could it be true? Could she really be connected to something ancient, something powerful? “Zayn,” she whispers. “What if I’m not just anyone?” “Then you’ll need someone strong by your side,” he says. “To keep you alive.” There’s something intense in his voice—dangerous, protective, possessive. A knock interrupts the moment. Zayn growls. “What?” Mira’s voice comes through the door. “Alpha. We found tracks near the border. Not rogues. Someone was watching the cliffs.” Zayn’s eyes snap toward the door. “I’ll be there.” He turns back to Luna. “Stay in this room. Don’t open the door to anyone but me. Understood?” Luna nods, heart pounding. As he leaves, she lies back on the bed, her thoughts racing. The dreams, the glow, the half-shift—it’s all happening too fast. But the worst part isn’t the fear. It’s the feeling that something is coming. In the deep forest beyond the Blood Claw border, a figure kneels before a shadowy figure cloaked in black. “She’s awakening,” the kneeling man says. “Just like you predicted.” The figure doesn’t speak at first. Then, in a voice colder than ice, he murmurs, “And the mark?” “Clear as the prophecy described. On her shoulder.” The dark figure lifts his hand, and a wolf-shaped ring glints on his finger. “So she lives,” he whispers. “After all these years.” “What do we do, my lord?” A cruel smile spreads beneath the cloak. “We wait. Let the alpha get comfortable. Let her think she’s safe. Then we strike.” Back in her room, Luna can’t sleep. The moonlight hits her skin, and her mark starts to tingle again. She pulls the sleeve back and stares at it. It pulses faintly, like a second heartbeat. She closes her eyes, trying to focus, but the energy inside her is too loud. Her wolf stirs again. Let me out, she hears faintly. She gasps and sits up. “What—” Her wolf’s voice is clearer now. Not words, not exactly. But emotions. Urgency. A push to move. Something isn’t right. She throws on a cloak and silently slips out of the room. The hallway is quiet. She creeps down the stairs, out the side door, and into the cool night. Her feet carry her to the training grounds. The place is empty, but the wind howls strangely through the trees. Then she hears it. A whisper. Not in the air. Not in her head. Behind her. She spins—but no one’s there. “Hello?” she calls softly. No reply. She turns back—and freezes. Zayn is standing right in front of her. Her heart jumps. “Zayn…” He stares at her, eyes narrowed. “I told you to stay inside.” “I felt something,” she says. “Something pulled me here.” His jaw clenches. “You shouldn’t be wandering alone. Someone’s hunting you.” He takes a step forward. “And they’re getting closer.” “I can feel them too,” she whispers. He lifts his hand to her cheek, brushes his thumb along her skin. “I can’t protect you if you keep walking into danger.” “I’m not afraid,” she says. “You should be.” “I’m tired of hiding.” Their breaths mix again, tension crackling between them like fire. His hand slides to the back of her neck. She leans in—eyes locked, lips almost brushing. “I don’t think this is just fate,” she whispers. “No,” he breathes. “It’s something deeper.” Then his lips press to hers. The kiss is slow at first, searching, intense. Her heart stutters. His hands tighten on her waist, pulling her close. She clutches his shirt, holding onto the one thing that feels real. The world falls away. But just as heat builds between them— A loud howl splits the air. Zayn breaks the kiss, growling low. “They’ve crossed the border,” he says darkly. He turns away, shifting mid-step. His wolf form is massive—dark, powerful, fast. He disappears into the trees. Luna stands alone, heart racing, lips tingling. The shadows are no longer distant. They’ve arrived.
