CHAPTER 001

1020 Words
CHAPTER 001 Sigrid's Perspective I follow my brother Sindre and his friend Odin along the school hallway. They hardly ever pay attention to me. Maren, my nanny, makes my brother Sindre and his best friend Odin let me follow them. Maren has been with me forever. Whenever my dad has pack duties to attend to, she makes herself available. My dad holds the position of Beta within our pack which keeps him busy so Maren was hired to "teach me how to behave like a lady." Her actual task is to show me how to keep out of the way of male pack members. To be quiet unless spoken to. Of course, she doesn’t do that. He fails to notice as long as I perform impressively in his presence. Sindre dedicates the majority of his time to his friends. Their pack includes future Alphas Casper and Dagfinn alongside future Delta Sverre and future Gamma Odin. They stick together like glue. The boys turn out to be more problematic than several girls from our school. I keep my eyes focused on my feet while walking. Maren instructed Sindre to ensure my safe arrival at school because I returned home last week with a bruise under my eye and arm scrapes. I explained to her that I tripped but it wasn’t serious yet she remained skeptical. She understands that I’ve encountered problems with students at school. My werewolf pack functions through a strict hierarchical structure. At some point in our lives, we all make attempts to demonstrate our dominance. Especially us middle schoolers. The strange thing is that kids without ranks push themselves the hardest to impress those who are ranked. They want to get noticed and gain status. Popularity seems disconnected from actions while remaining directly tied to one's position within the hierarchy. People wish to befriend the children of the Alpha above all others. That’s the ultimate goal. Sindre, Sverre, and Odin have gained substantial popularity because they were born into prestigious ranks. Me? I don’t matter. My Beta bloodline and being the Beta’s daughter do not grant me any special status. I am the reason my mother passed away. My existence alone justifies pushing me down to the lowest Omega status. That’s why Maren worries about me. Maren has witnessed how my peers mistreat me, but no one, including my father, takes any action against it. “Move it, fatty. Kari sneers as she tells me I’m blocking the entire hallway. “Are you sure you’re a wolf?” When I step aside to give her space, she deliberately places her foot to trip me. I topple sideways while my head hits the locker because I attempt to avoid falling with my books. The crash makes everyone stop. The entire classroom stares at me, but my attention stays fixed solely on Sindre’s eyes. He glances toward the noise, where he catches my look before shaking his head. He rolls his eyes before walking away as if he hadn’t noticed anything. Odin and Kari follow behind him. The other children near us begin to scatter away. Some laugh quietly, some loudly. None of the people gathered around me stepped forward to offer assistance. Seventh Grade Kari forces me into the entrance door of the school courtyard while shouting, "Never challenge my authority in front of another student again!" I didn’t dare question your power; I simply stated that hitting students because they're blocking your path isn't acceptable. The reason they were late does not fall on their shoulders. Generally, I manage to hold back from responding to her insults, but today something drove me past my breaking point. Her tardiness to class resulted from skipping the second period to grab coffee with friends, and now she is upset because she arrived late to the third period. She understands a teacher will report her tardiness to her father. She gets reported, but no one ever takes action. As I attempt to walk away from the door I straighten up to focus on the hallway before Marnie from Kari’s group steps forward to interrupt me. Marnie steps forward and intentionally trips me, which results in her iced latte landing on my head. A laughing crowd gathers as laughter echoes through the air. I glance up to find Sindre and his friends joining in the laughter with the surrounding group. Kari tells me loudly enough for everyone to hear that training harder and losing some baby fat could stop me from being so clumsy. Marnie leads a mocking laugh at my expense before she directs her attention to Sindre along with the rest of their group. “Hey, boys. Sindre and the guys are meeting at the fire pit tonight, right? Neither Sindre nor Odin looks at me as they continue walking. They just keep walking. I'm reaching my limit for how much of this I can endure. The most upsetting thing is that I’ve lost all sense of why my feelings matter. Every day is the same. It’s the same teasing. The same loneliness. This place feels completely alien to me. A single afternoon marks a turning point when everything transforms. A new girl shows up at school. Her name is Solveig, yet she stands out as unlike anyone else. She behaves differently because she doesn’t tease me like the rest of them. After enduring an intense training session, she takes the step to approach me. I’ve grown accustomed to remaining unseen and staying out of sight. But Solveig? She sees me. She doesn’t just see me, though. She talks to me. She wants to be my friend. I'm unsure of how to respond when she approaches me. Can I trust her? Will Solveig become another person who betrays my trust? For the first time in ages, I have the feeling that someone might genuinely care about me. Would it be possible for me to release my past and allow someone new into my life? Will I be able to leave the shadows behind and take control of my future? The pain from past betrayals might prevent me from trusting her forever.
