Chapter 007

Chapter 007 The day proceeded without any problems, and I did not run into Kari and her crew. I could not determine whether the events from this morning's training session or my new friendship influenced the situation. Nobody said anything to me, and people avoided eye contact, but they didn't act against me. I suspected my newfound companionship with Solveig was the reason why no one bothered me today. For the first time today, I experienced an unexpected moment of peace, which made me smile as I walked to put my stuff in my locker after school. The positive moments in my life always end too quickly. Kari's voice rang out, accusing me of pretending toughness because I'm Delta Kjetil's favorite suck-up. You probably excel in more than just sucking up to Delta Kjetil. The reason you get his attention must be this way. Despite feeling extreme disgust by her words, my skin crawled, but I chose to ignore her. I drew in a deep breath and carried on with my locker organization while I wished that she would lose interest and leave after her nasty comment. She slammed my locker shut. My quick reflexes saved me from losing some fingers. Solveig interrupted by stepping up as she tried to speak again. "You promised me we'd hang out after school," she said to me while ignoring Kari's presence as she stated she was starving. The deadly look Kari shot at Solveig made me suppress a laugh. "I almost forgot about that, sorry," I told Kari while turning away from her. I checked to make sure I had all the items I needed to complete my work before the weekend. After we moved a short distance, Kari shouted at us. New girl, choose your friends wisely because some people here can bring you trouble. People around this school will quickly ruin your reputation and create problems for you. We both turned to look at her. Solveig took my arm and turned us away from Kari while saying, "Thanks for the tip." The distinctive sound of approaching heels reached my ears. "Listen here, you little... Hey, guys!" Kari's voice instantaneously transformed from venomous to bubbly. She was watching us from behind our shoulders. The group of guys approaching us responded with a generic, indifferent "Hey.". Seriously? I wanted to melt into the wall. "Wow, they look even better up close," Solveig whispered to me while we turned to face Morten and his friends. I rolled my eyes at her. No one from school ever approached me in person. The beautiful brunette walking beside me must be the reason they were here. These guys turned out to be gorgeous, and they seemed aware of their attractiveness. My brother Morten and I shared an almost identical appearance with sandy blonde hair and gray-blue eyes, which we inherited from our mother. The only physical distinction between Morten and me was his father-like build that featured broad shoulders and a slim waist. His hair maintained a military short style on the sides and back while he let it grow longer on top. He styled his hair by running his fingers through it to make it stand up straight, but strangely this method worked well for him. Sverre, who was destined to become Delta, resembled someone who had just left a surfing advertisement because of his wavy, sun-kissed, light blonde hair that reached below his ears, his dark blue eyes, and his slim, muscled frame. His height surpassed others, but his shoulders were less wide than theirs. He maintained a ripped appearance while proving to be among the fastest warriors I encountered. The future Gamma Odin appeared to be a typical biker. His dark brown medium-length hair that verged on black draped forward over his face. The intensity of his brown eyes created a clear warning not to mess with him. Both his forearms and chest bore tattoos, with the chest tattoo visible through the opening of his shirt collar. He maintained silence among his peers, which intensified the enigma surrounding him while his expression almost reached resting-b***h-face status. The twins who would eventually become Alphas possessed a stunning ability to turn anyone into mush with a simple look. Well, maybe that was just me. Their black hair featured soft waves. They maintained their hair short on the sides and back to match Morten’s look. Cameron maintained his hairstyle meticulously so each curl stayed in place perfectly. His sharp features were softened by his light green eyes. Dakota allowed his curls to roam free without restriction. I frequently imagined the sensation of running my fingers through those curls. His eyes had a playful blue gleam, which revealed him to be the troublemaker between them. A voice from behind us said, "Hey." "Nice moves at training today. I hope we will have another opportunity to practice those skills during advanced training. You can give us some tips. Sverre has to improve his previous best takedown time, said Cameron while smiling, and Dakota gave him a friendly backslap with a laugh. I smiled and nodded, a little dumbfounded. I had no idea how to respond. I’d only ever exchanged quick greetings with them at my house, and we had never spoken at school. Despite their long friendship with Morten and numerous visits to my home, this conversation marked the longest I'd ever talked to any of them. A strange high-pitched giggle came from my left side. I looked around without realizing that Kari stood by my side. She extended her arm to touch Cameron’s chest. She gave me a forced smile and said, "You’re so funny, babe." Sverre stands as one of our top-ranked warriors. Sverre could execute that move even if one of his hands was tied behind him. Sverre's dad behaved politely toward Sigrid and Solveig. She paused and gave an exaggerated cough. The other wolves should not have to face you guys. Who is she calling a lower wolf? My muscles quivered as irritation washed over me. I glanced down and blinked multiple times to confirm that my eye color remained normal so my wolf presence would remain hidden. Cameron inhaled slowly and took a small step backward when his twin began to speak. I am confident that Sverre is inadequate and must return to the fundamentals. "You should send him to train with the pups for the week," Dakota suggested while laughing. Morten started laughing, and Solveig followed him, which caused me to join their laughter too. Their laughter was so infectious. For the first time in a very long while, I felt at ease with Morten and his friends during this public school moment. I shifted my gaze downward and took deep breaths to regain my composure. Returning my gaze to Morten, I spotted a brief expression that seemed to carry pain. I couldn’t quite read it. Was he avoiding conversation with me by being here? The thought stung more than I expected. This level of pain should not be possible after all that has happened. But it did. I immediately looked away again and directed my gaze to the floor. I didn't want people to ridicule me again because of my strange feelings towards Morten. Kari began making fun of Sverre by saying that he was one of her favorite people to tease while she patted his arm. "Sigrid promised me some food. We were planning to go to dinner now, so excuse us, gentlemen. Solveig led us through the tall group of guys without hesitation before directing me to where she'd parked her car earlier. A frustrated huff came from behind us, but I couldn't identify who it belonged to. I desperately wanted to leave the place immediately. "How do you already have a car?" I asked Solveig about her car while knowing that she hadn’t reached sixteen years old yet. Solveig earned her license early through special permission granted by the Alpha. Since my parents worked for the Alpha King full-time, I needed an alternative transportation method. I can keep my license so long as I avoid joyriding or any foolish driving behavior. She shrugged and made it seem like nothing exceptional had happened. She had the uncanny ability to persuade anybody into anything without much effort. "Hey!" Our path toward her parked car halted abruptly when a shout from behind caused us both to turn around. Did you remember to invite yourself to the bonfire tonight I almost forgot to ask you two. Sverre jogged up to us, looking expectant. A knot developed in my stomach, and I found myself unable to prevent it. Would I go? What would the next steps be if I decided to go?
