CHAPTER 008
Sverre's Point of View
Her uncle and aunt are with her because her parents work for the Alpha King. Who is this girl? My father failed to tell me about anyone joining the pack.
As soon as I began to ponder about it, I noticed her. Right before my father arrived, the most stunning girl entered the training grounds. She demonstrated perfect skill at creating an impressive entrance. She scanned the crowd without apparent concern before walking toward the field’s distant side away from me and the other men. She conversed with someone who remained unseen to me before redirecting her attention to my dad and fellow trainers.
Since Dad taught us this new move just a few days ago, I lost focus during the explanation. I
was too busy looking at her.
“What do you know about this new girl joining our pack?” I asked Dagfinn, who stood beside me.
My parents mentioned that she would spend her sophomore year here with us. She comes from a family that serves the Alpha King, and they're currently working on a secret mission.
Her family has come along with her,” he shrugged as though it didn’t matter.
“I call dibs. The girls in this area are both needy and dull. I’m over them,” I said.
“You call dibs, huh? “What if she refuses your hideous self?” Odin pushed me lightly.
I can't be beaten as the most attractive man in these parts. I’ll be the one to catch her attention because nobody else has a chance against me.
“Wanna bet?” Morten asked.
“Depends. “What do we stand to win?” I asked while giving him my complete attention.
Morten started by saying we need to get her to join us for the bonfire tonight, but it should not be a date.
“She must come all by herself,” Dagfinn stated.
Odin explained that she must speak to you before anyone else.
“Approaching her is not allowed until she approaches you first,” Casper concluded.
That’s going to be tricky. The regular group needs to stay away because she won’t feel comfortable approaching me if they are there. I can already tell this challenge won’t be simple.
Dagfinn emphasized his urgency by holding up his wrist where his watch would normally be.
“Fine, I’m in." If I win the contest, she's off-limits to all of you," I warned before giving them a hard stare.
“Deal,” they all said in unison.
The next step requires me to gain her attention. Since she appears to be in good shape, I should have a chance to approach her and ask my dad to set me up with her. My attempt to engage her was cut short when I noticed my dad’s second-in-command was making plans for her with Morten’s sister.
Man, she’s tiny. Unless someone already knew about their relationship, they would not realize they were related. Morten demonstrates his outgoing nature while showing extreme dedication to his upcoming beta position. His sister, Sigrid, is super shy. Being born second most likely doesn’t provide Sigrid the same powerful beta blood type that Morten has.
I defeated all of them using this move previously. Today their embarrassment will happen again. We alternate partners during our sparring sessions, which primarily consist of going through the motions. Our attendance at these sessions stems from our father's belief that we need to set a good example. The absence of our attendance would set a bad example for others to follow suit. Our additional training sessions occur outside of our scheduled practice times but remain unknown to others. I understand what he means by needing to be a good example. During this time we primarily observe how trainers manage the large group.
The sound of my dad’s booming voice cuts through my thoughts. “I think a demonstration is in order. Sigrid and Solveig, please demonstrate how we should perform the new defensive move.
Wait, what? Now I know her name. We form a circle around Sigrid and Solveig while the guys and I stand together. What the hell is Dad doing? What makes Dad choose these two girls for the demonstration? We have practiced this move for several days now, yet Sigrid and Solveig appear to be unfamiliar with even the fundamental steps.
Sigrid gazes at her father as though flames are about to consume her. She probably feels this situation isn't fair because she's already super shy.
Some kids in the crowd are making foolish remarks. I feel Morten stiffen next to me. He’s protective of his sister. Sigrid’s mother passed away during childbirth, and her father remains unable to move past her death. Morten takes on numerous household tasks to distract their father from Sigrid. She could be shy because she appears so tiny and vulnerable. Her loose clothing gives her an even tinier appearance. The fact that she was at training escaped my awareness.
“Ready?” Dad’s voice booms. As Sigrid and Solveig step into position, everyone in the crowd becomes silent. The children in the audience produce more laughter.
“Sigrid, use the new defensive move. Dad challenges me to pin Sigrid within thirty seconds. What the hell? What does he mean by “this time?”
I look at the guys who show clear signs of confusion, which mirrors my bewilderment. I hear some mumbles. “What?” “Thirty seconds? No way.” And then a few giggles.
No one can accomplish that task in thirty seconds. No one can do that in under thirty seconds. Not her! Someone shouts out for all to hear. I hear some kids agreeing, too. This person doesn’t realize that I executed this exact move yesterday.
I have to determine who made that comment and arrange to team up with him. He's about to receive a major surprise.
Sigrid and Solveig stare directly at each other with unwavering resolve. They appear prepared to enter a fight.
Dad responds with a touch of dry humor, saying, “Just watch.” “Set...GO!”
The moment Dad commanded "go," Sigrid made her move. Where did that speed come from? Solveig attempts to react by feinting left and then moves to duck down to tackle Sigrid with her shoulder. Sigrid leaps to action by delivering a knee strike to Solveig’s chest, which removes her breath. Sigrid delivers an elbow strike to Solveig's back.
As Solveig attempts to capture Sigrid's waist and force her down, she finds her efforts thwarted by Sigrid, who uses the situation to her advantage. Sigrid lets herself fall onto Solveig and then pins her throat to the ground with her knee while securing Solveig’s arm in an unbreakable hold.
In less than ten seconds, it’s over. The crowd falls silent.
Sigrid remains combat-ready while she continues to stare at Solveig's face. Dad approaches her and gives her shoulder a couple of pats to draw her attention. After she pins Solveig down, Sigrid releases her opponent to help her stand.
Dad gazes in our direction as he looks at me and my friends. Shock stops us in our tracks as we stand gaping at what we just witnessed.
He checks his stopwatch before turning back to us with a smile. Why is he smiling like that?
“Less than ten seconds. Damn. Sverre, you're no longer the champion because her time crushed your best by a long shot,” he announces to the whole group with a chuckle.
“Holy crap! What just happened?” Odin asks behind me.
“It was a blur. I guess I blinked and completely missed half of the event.
“Sverre’s not king anymore. Dagfinn laughs as he says the little beta just took Sverre's crown.
Even though I'm shocked about what happened, I find myself laughing along with them. I believe I have discovered how to approach Solveig.
Dad pats me on the shoulder. You boys might start taking this training seriously after today’s events. The two rivals you face are more formidable than you realized until now. He says jokingly while walking away that Sigrid will set all of you straight. She has proven to be the top trainee I've ever overseen, surpassing all of you. Solveig ranks as the runner-up after the top performer.
Dagfinn laughs and says he hasn’t seen anything hotter since his summer training.
Odin jokes that the summer training girl was probably gay and believed you were not macho enough.
“Observing two girls engage in grappling remains just as exciting,” Dagfinn states.
“No! “Don’t put my little sister on your ‘I’d bang that’ list!” Morten growls at us with a fierce glare.
“She’s growing up, my friend. Those baggy sweats are not helping her look her best. The sight of her tumbling around with Solveig gave me such a delightful scene that I knew tonight's dreams would be sweet. Tonight I’m going to dream sweet dreams.
Morten fires daggers at me while struggling to conceal his embarrassment.
The recent events won’t leave my mind. The challenge Solveig presents requires all my focus, but I find myself questioning how much I can push this new obstacle considering Sigrid's potential influence. Her fighting skills may not reveal everything about her personality. And if so…what else is she hiding?
