Sasky POV
The doors opened.
Bright light flooded inside.
A masked man climbed in carrying a silver case.
Something about that immediately felt uncomfortable.
Very uncomfortable.
One after another, he injected everyone.
The girl beside me cried.
The man opposite me tried fighting.
Neither of it mattered.
When my turn came, I tried pulling away from him.
But the needle still found my neck.
A sharp sting.
Then dizziness.
The world began spinning.
Voices became distant.
Blurry.
My eyelids grew heavy.
And the last thing I remember seeing was one of the masked men staring at me.
Not threateningly.
Not cruelly.
Almost…
Curiously.
Then darkness swallowed everything.
After some time, I woke up.
The first thing I noticed was the headache.
The second thing was the smell.
Dust.
Smoke.
Metal.
And something else I couldn't quite place.
I groaned and slowly opened my eyes.
Big mistake.
The pounding in my head immediately doubled.
“You are awake”.
A voice came from behind.
I looked behind me and there was a young lady with beautiful loose hair, like someone auditioning for a beauty pageant.
She stared at me smiling.
I looked around properly this time.
The room was enormous.
Stone walls.
Metal beams.
Dim lights hanging from the ceiling.
Rows and rows of people sitting on blankets.
Some asleep.
Some awake.
Some were crying.
A few looked completely defeated.
Fear settled heavily in my chest.
This wasn't temporary I said to myself.
This wasn't some random kidnapping at all.
Whoever brought us here had resources.
A lot of them.
“Where are we?”
A guy shrugged.
“If I knew that, I do already be gone”.
Fair point.
I slowly pushed myself upright.
My body felt like it had been hit by a truck.
Actually…
Considering I had been transported in one, that wasn't surprising.
“How long was I unconscious?”
A day he replied.
My eyes widened.
“A day?”
“Maybe a little more”.
Wonderful.
I am not only officially unemployed, but kidnapped, and missing for over twenty-four hours.
My life is really thriving.
The guy laughed softly.
The sound surprised me.
There was something warm about it.
Human.
Or maybe normal.
Which felt strange considering where we were.
“I'm Kanaris”.
I looked at him.
Up close, he was…
Well.
Ridiculously attractive.
Not that I intended to tell him that.
Strong jaw.
Dark hair.
Silver-gray eyes.
And a scar across his left eye.
The kind of scar that should have ruined a face but somehow made him look even better.
Life wasn't really fair.
I looked like I had been dragged through a bush backwards.
But this man here looked like he belonged on a magazine cover.
“Sasky”.
He nodded.
“Nice to meet you”.
I snorted.
“Under normal circumstances, sure”.
That finally earned me a real smile.
And for a moment…
Just a moment…
I forgot where I was.
A loud metal door opened nearby.
Every conversation instantly died.
People lowered their heads.
The atmosphere changed so fast it felt unnatural.
I followed everyone’s gaze
Three armed men entered.
Black uniforms.
Black masked.
D Karmas.
My stomach twisted.
One of them carried a tray.
Another carried bottles of water.
The third looked like he hated humanity.
The prisoners immediately rushed forward.
Food had apparently become more important than dignity.
Honestly.
I couldn't blame them.
By the time the tray reached my section, nothing was left.
Not even crumbs.
Great.
Now I was kidnapped and starving.
Fantastic.
I leaned back against the wall.
Maybe hunger would eventually knock me unconscious again.
At least then I wouldn't have to think.
A shadow appeared in front of me
I looked up.
Kanaris was holding out a bowl.
“No”.
He raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
“I'm not taking your food.”
“You are”.
“I'm not”.
“You are Sasky”.
I glared.
He stared back.
Neither of us moved.
A few nearby prisoners started watching.
Probably because they had nothing better to do.
“You are stubborn”.
“So are you”.
“Fair”.
I hated that he had a point.
The bowl remained extended.
Eventually my stomach betrayed me by growling loudly.
Traitor.
Absolutely traitor.
Kanaris heard it too.
Unfortunately.
His grin widened.
I wanted the ground to swallow me whole.
“Take the food Sasky”.
I sighed dramatically.
“Fine”.
Victory flashed across his face.
Far too much victory for someone giving away his food.
I accepted the bowl.
Our fingers brushed briefly.
For some reason, he looked away first.
Strange.
Very strange.
“Thank you.”
“You are welcome.”
I took a spoonful.
The food wasn't amazing.
Actually, it tasted terrible.
But right then it felt like the greatest meal on earth.
I was halfway through eating when a cheerful voice appeared beside me.
“Interesting.”
I turned quickly.
And it was the same young lady with beautiful loose hair, I saw earlier when I regained consciousness after arriving here.
She looked about my age.
Maybe younger.
Her eyes bounced between me and Kanaris.
Specifically Kanaris.
“Oh no,” I muttered.
“What?”
I pointed.
“You‘re doing that thing.”
“What thing?”
“The thing where girls stare at attractive men and forget how to blink.”
She blushed.
Then I immediately looked at Kanaris again.
I laughed despite myself having a terrible day.
The girl laughed too.
“My name is Tracy.”
“Sasky.”
She nodded toward Kanaris.
“You know he's never done that before, right?”
“Done what?”
“Gave away his food”.
I glanced at him.
He was sitting across the room.
Quiet.
Watching people.
Thinking about something.
Or maybe trying not to think.
Hard to tell.
“What makes you think that?”
“Because I've been here for two weeks”.
My spoon froze.
Two weeks?
I shouted looking surprised.
Dear God.
Tracy continued.
“He barely talk’s.”
He barely smiles.”
“And he definitely doesn't share food.”
I looked back at him.
For some reason, he seemed uncomfortable now.
Like he knew we were talking about him.
Suspicious.
Very suspicious.
“You know,” Tracy whispered dramatically.
“I think he likes you.”
I almost choked on my food.
“Absolutely not.”
She laughed.
“Oh he definitely does.”
