There was no fanfare, there were no announcements, no headlines in the Law Journal, no lurid stories in the tabloids. There were, instead, darkened transoms over chambers’ doors and shuttered courtrooms with dust motes swirling in shafts of sunlight. As a law clerk assigned to one of the most decent and honest judges ever to take the bench, I was largely unaffected by the scandal. Oh sure, I’d be walking down a corridor past another abandoned chambers and realize I hadn’t seen Judge So-and-So and staff for awhile. It was a sad sight, but I had other more pressing problems on my mind. My own judge, while beyond reproach, was also beyond mandatory
