Chapter 16 – Truth Revealed and New Protections

1167 Words
The air in the penthouse felt different now—no longer heavy with hidden secrets, but charged with a new kind of determination. Now that Lucas knew the truth, the weight I had carried alone for weeks finally felt lighter, even as the danger around us grew more real. He held me gently, his arms firm and reassuring, as if he could shield me from the whole world just by being there. “From this second on, nothing changes except one thing: we face this together, no more hiding,” he said softly, pulling back just enough to look into my eyes. “Whether this baby is mine or Damian’s, it doesn’t matter right now. You and the child come first. That is our only priority.” Tears welled up again, but this time they were tears of relief. “Thank you, Lucas. I was so afraid you would think I planned this, or that it would ruin everything we agreed on.” He shook his head immediately, a faint, warm smile touching his lips. “I know you better than that. And even if things get more complicated, I would never turn my back on you. Now, let’s fix everything properly.” Within hours, he made a series of strict arrangements. He replaced all the security staff in the building, brought in his most trusted team, and installed new surveillance systems covering every entrance, hallway, and even the parking area. He also arranged for a private nurse and doctor to come directly to the apartment—no more visits to public clinics, no more chances for anyone to follow or intercept us. “Tomorrow morning, we will do a full check‑up,” Lucas explained as we sat at the table later that night. “We’ll confirm the baby’s condition, and we’ll also start keeping a clear medical record. That will be important later, especially if Damian tries to use this against us in court.” I nodded, feeling more secure than I had in months. “And Sofia? She already tried once. She won’t stop, will she?” “Not easily,” Lucas agreed, his expression turning sharp and serious. “But now we know her game. She wants this pregnancy gone, while Damian wants to claim it as his own. They are working against each other too, and that gives us a small advantage. We can use their conflict to protect ourselves.” Meanwhile, the news of the failed attempt reached Damian as well. Viktor reported every detail, and when Damian heard that someone had tried to harm Isabella and the child, his face turned a terrifying shade of cold rage. “Sofia,” he hissed the name through clenched teeth. “She dared to touch what is mine?” “Sir, it is almost certainly her doing,” Viktor said carefully. “Her people were seen near the building earlier that day. She sees the baby as a threat to her plans of taking over the company.” Damian slammed his fist so hard on the desk that papers scattered everywhere. “I have tolerated her greed and her scheming for too long, but this crosses every line. If she harms a single hair on Isabella’s head or puts that child in danger, I will disown her. I will take everything she has and leave her with nothing.” He stood up, pacing back and forth like a caged predator. “This changes everything. If Sofia is trying to kill the baby, then Isabella is not safe with Hart, and she is not safe anywhere else except under my direct protection. I have to get her back—before my own sister succeeds where I never would.” “Sir, if you move now, you will only scare her more,” Viktor warned. “She already distrusts you. Forcing your way in will make her believe you are just like Sofia, wanting to control or destroy what she has.” “I don’t care what she thinks right now,” Damian snapped. “I care that she is carrying my child, and that she is walking into even greater danger than I ever planned. Tell the team—increase surveillance, but do not approach her or the building. Just watch, and report every move Sofia makes. If she tries again, we stop her ourselves.” Back at the penthouse, the next morning brought the long‑awaited medical check‑up. The doctor arrived quietly, examined me thoroughly, and gave us a reassuring report. “Everything is stable so far,” she said with a kind smile. “The baby is growing as expected, and there are no signs of harm. But you must avoid all stress, stay indoors as much as possible, and be very careful with everything you eat or drink. No more taking risks outside.” Lucas nodded, writing down every instruction carefully. “We will follow every rule, doctor. Thank you.” After the doctor left, he turned to me, reaching out to rest his hand gently over mine. “We have the proof now. Official records, clear timeline, and proof that someone tried to harm you. If Damian or Sofia make any move, we have the evidence to fight back.” I looked at him, feeling a warmth I had not expected to grow stronger. “You are doing so much for me… for us. Even though you didn’t have to.” “I told you,” he said softly, “our agreement was the start, but somewhere along the way, it became more than that. I care about you, Isabella. And I will not let anyone hurt you or this child, no matter what it costs.” Just then, his phone buzzed. He looked at the screen, and his expression hardened. “It’s a message from our informant. Damian has found out about Sofia’s attempt. He is furious, and now he is moving his own people to watch the building—not to attack, but to stop anyone else from getting close.” I blinked in surprise. “Damian is protecting us?” “In his own twisted way, yes,” Lucas said, shaking his head. “He wants you and the baby safe, but only so he can have you for himself. It’s not kindness—it’s still possession. But for now, it creates a strange situation: we are protected from Sofia by both our security and Damian’s men. Two enemies guarding the same door, but for different reasons.” It was a strange, uneasy balance—but it gave us breathing room. We now had time to plan, to prepare, and to decide what to do when the truth about the baby’s father finally came out. And as I rested my hand on my stomach, I knew that no matter which side of the war we stood on, this child was the one thing that could change everything—for better or for worse.
