The days stretched into a tense rhythm—every smile felt forced, every movement calculated, every conversation held back by the heavy secret I carried. Eight weeks had passed, and while my body was still showing only subtle changes, my mind was in constant turmoil. I had to be careful with every word, every action, and every place I went, knowing that eyes were watching from more than one direction.
Lucas’s suspicion grew with each passing day. He was not a man who ignored changes in the people around him, especially not someone he had agreed to protect. One evening, as we sat at the dining table, he pushed his plate aside and looked at me directly, his expression serious.
“Isabella, we need to talk,” he said, his voice calm but firm. “You’ve been distant, you avoid certain foods, you tire easily, and you leave the house without telling me every detail. I know you’re going through a lot, but this is more than just stress. What are you hiding from me?”
My heart skipped a beat, and I gripped my fork tightly to stop my hands from shaking. “I’m not hiding anything, Lucas. I just… need time to process everything that’s happening. The divorce, the threats, Sofia’s schemes—it’s all too much sometimes.”
He leaned forward, his eyes searching mine. “We promised no secrets. Remember? How can I protect you if you don’t let me know what you’re up against?”
“I know,” I whispered, looking down. “I’m just trying to handle it myself first.”
Before he could press further, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, his jaw tightening immediately. “Excuse me,” he said, standing up and walking to the window to take the call.
I breathed a silent sigh of relief, but the reprieve was only temporary. From the tone of his voice, I could tell the news was not good. When he ended the call and turned back to face me, his expression was grim.
“Damian has filed a new petition in court,” he said. “He’s asking for a temporary order to restrict your movements, claiming that I’m influencing you against your own will and that you’re not making decisions with a clear mind. He’s using your recent behavior as proof—saying you look unwell, that you’re acting differently, and that you need to be under his care instead.”
My blood ran cold. “He knows. Or at least he suspects.”
“Exactly,” Lucas agreed. “He’s not just guessing anymore. He’s looking for any reason to bring you back to him legally. And if he finds out the truth about your condition, he will use it as his strongest argument—saying the child needs both parents, that you’re living in an unsafe environment, and that he can provide better stability.”
I felt my throat go dry. “What do we do?”
“For now, we fight it legally,” Lucas said. “But we have to move faster. I’ve already instructed our lawyers to prepare a strong response, but we also need to make sure you’re seen in public looking healthy, confident, and in control of your own choices. If we let him paint you as weak or confused, the court might side with him.”
Meanwhile, in Damian’s office, the pieces were falling into place just as he wanted. The doctor he had sent to observe me had returned with a report that confirmed his growing belief.
“All signs point to pregnancy, sir,” the doctor said quietly. “The fatigue, sensitivity to smells, changes in appetite—they all match. It would be safe to say she is around eight weeks along.”
A slow, triumphant smile spread across Damian’s face. For the first time in months, he felt like he had the upper hand. “Finally,” he murmured. “Something that even Hart can’t take away from me. If that child is mine, she will have no choice but to come back. No court in this country will separate a child from its father without just cause.”
Viktor, however, did not share his excitement. “Sir, please think carefully. If you use this child as a weapon, you will only make her hate you more. Even if you win the legal battle, you will lose any chance of ever having her trust again. Is a victory on paper worth a lifetime of resentment?”
Damian’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, determined look. “I don’t care about how she feels right now. I care about keeping my family together. This child is the future of the Black name, and Isabella belongs with me. Hart is just a temporary distraction—one that will disappear once she realizes where her true place is.”
But Damian was not the only one who had heard the news. Sofia had her own network of informants, and it did not take long for the rumor to reach her ears as well. When she learned that Isabella might be pregnant, her face twisted into a mixture of shock and anger.
“That little witch,” she hissed, pacing back and forth in her office. “She gets everything she wants, doesn’t she? First she takes my brother’s money, then his heart, and now she carries his heir? This changes everything.”
Her assistant watched nervously. “What do you want to do, Ms. Sofia?”
Sofia stopped pacing, her eyes narrowing into slits. “If that child is born, Damian will never let her go. He will forgive every mistake, ignore every lie, just to keep her and the baby close. And that means I will never get control of Black Enterprises—my brother will leave everything to that child instead of me.” She turned to her assistant, her voice sharp and dangerous. “We have to make sure this child never becomes a threat. Or better yet—make sure it doesn’t exist at all.”
“Ms. Sofia, that’s dangerous—”
“Quiet!” she snapped. “Do as I say. Find out where she goes, who she meets, and what medicines or vitamins she takes. If we can’t get rid of her, we can make sure this pregnancy never reaches full term. Once the child is gone, Damian will have no reason to hold onto her anymore, and he’ll finally see her for what she really is—a curse to our family.”
Back at the penthouse, I had no idea that the secret I carried had become a target from two sides. Damian wanted it to bind me to him forever, while Sofia wanted it destroyed to secure her own power. I was trapped between two dangerous plans, and the only person who could help me was Lucas—yet I still could not bring myself to tell him the truth.
That night, I stood by the window, looking out over the city lights, my hand resting gently on my stomach. I spoke softly, almost as if talking to the life growing inside me. “I’m sorry you have to come into a world like this. But I promise you—no matter what happens, I will protect you. Even if I have to face them all alone.”
Behind me, the door creaked open. I turned quickly, finding Lucas standing there, holding a glass of warm milk. He set it down on the table and looked at me with a gaze that held more understanding than I expected.
“Whatever it is,” he said softly, “you don’t have to face it alone. Whenever you’re ready to tell me, I’ll be here. No judgment, no blame—just help.”
I wanted to say it right then. I wanted to let the words spill out and let him share the burden. But fear held me back—fear of how he would react, fear of changing everything, fear of losing the only safe place I had found.
“Thank you,” I whispered instead, and watched as he turned and left the room, leaving me alone again with my secret.
And somewhere in the shadows, Sofia was already putting her plan into motion, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
