The days following the incident at the warehouse brought a fragile kind of calm, though the air still hummed with unspoken tension. Damian had pulled back for the moment, but his silence felt more like the quiet before a storm than true peace. Sofia, too, had gone quiet in the media, but I knew better than to believe she had given up. She was simply waiting for the right moment to strike again.
Under the terms of our agreement, Lucas and I had to keep up the appearance of a deeply committed couple. That meant more public appearances, more dinners, and more moments where we had to act as if our feelings were real—even when the line between performance and reality began to blur.
One evening, Lucas invited me to a private gathering at his family’s estate, a grand residence set on the edge of the city, surrounded by lush gardens and tall iron gates. It was a smaller, more intimate event, mostly attended by close business partners and their families.
“Remember,” Lucas said as we walked toward the main hall, his hand resting lightly on the small of my back, warm and steady. “Tonight is about showing unity. The more natural we look together, the less room they leave for Damian to use against us.”
“I know,” I replied, offering him a soft smile. “I’m getting used to playing this part, though sometimes it feels like I’m losing myself in it.”
“You’re not losing anything,” he said quietly, leaning closer so only I could hear. “You’re just protecting yourself. And I’ll make sure you never forget who you really are.”
His words sent a strange flutter through my chest, one I tried hard to ignore. This was only a role, I reminded myself again and again. Nothing more.
Inside the hall, the atmosphere was warm and lively. People greeted us with polite smiles and curious glances, their eyes lingering on the woman who had been at the center of so much gossip lately. Lucas introduced me to everyone with such ease, speaking of me as if I had always belonged there, slowly but surely rewriting the narrative that Damian and Sofia had tried to create.
But peace never lasted long.
Halfway through the evening, the main doors opened, and a figure stepped inside that made my breath catch. Damian Black stood there, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, looking every bit as powerful and commanding as always. Behind him, Viktor followed quietly, his expression unreadable.
The room fell into a brief hush before murmurs spread through the crowd. Damian was not invited, yet here he was—unapologetic, confident, and clearly with a purpose.
He walked straight toward us, ignoring everyone else in the room. Lucas stepped slightly in front of me, a silent barrier, but Damian stopped just a few feet away, his dark eyes fixed entirely on me.
“Hart,” Damian said, his voice calm but carrying a sharp edge. “I didn’t expect to find you playing happy family so soon.”
“This is a private gathering, Damian,” Lucas replied, his tone equally steady. “You have no business here.”
“I have business anywhere that concerns what is mine,” Damian shot back, his gaze never leaving mine. “And Isabella—you look well. Too well, considering how quickly you moved on.”
Before I could answer, another voice cut in, smooth and charming. “Now, now, Damian. There’s no need to spoil such a lovely evening.”
Ethan Cole—one of the younger, most successful businessmen in the city, and someone I had met briefly at previous events—stepped between us, a playful smile on his face. He was handsome, easygoing, and had a reputation for being a smooth talker.
He turned to me, his smile widening. “Isabella, it has been far too long. I was hoping to run into you again. You look even more beautiful than I remember.”
Without waiting for a response, he reached out and took my hand, bringing it gently to his lips for a light kiss, his eyes holding mine a moment longer than necessary.
The reaction was immediate.
Lucas’s posture stiffened beside me, his jaw tightening visibly. And across from us, Damian’s eyes flashed with a dark, burning fire—pure, unmasked jealousy. His hands curled into fists at his sides, and for a moment, I thought he would step forward and start a fight right there in the middle of the room.
“Keep your hands to yourself, Cole,” Damian warned, his voice low and dangerous. “She is not someone you can play games with.”
Ethan only laughed, though his eyes held a glint of mischief. “Relax, Damian. We are all adults here. A little courtesy never hurt anyone. Unless… you are still claiming rights over a woman who no longer wants you?”
That was the spark that lit the flame.
Lucas stepped forward then, pulling me gently but firmly to his side, his arm wrapping securely around my waist. “He’s right, Damian. The divorce papers are signed. Isabella is free to speak to anyone she chooses, and spend time with whoever treats her with respect—something you clearly never learned how to do.”
The tension in the room became almost suffocating. Guests had stopped talking entirely, watching the confrontation unfold like a drama on stage.
I felt trapped in the middle of it all—two powerful men ready to clash over me, and a third who seemed to enjoy stirring the pot. But as I looked at them, I realized something: their jealousy was not about me, not entirely. It was about pride, about control, about who would win this silent war.
But beneath that, I also saw something more—raw, possessive emotion that neither of them could fully hide.
“Enough,” I said, my voice cutting through the silence, clear and firm. “This is not the place for this. Damian, if you have something to say, say it, but do not turn this into a spectacle. And Ethan—thank you for the compliment, but please, do not use me as a way to provoke others.”
Ethan raised his hands in surrender, still smiling. “My apologies, Isabella. I only meant to be friendly.”
Damian stared at me for a long moment, the anger in his eyes warring with something else—longing, perhaps, or regret. “You think you can control everything now?” he asked softly, so only we could hear. “You think this little arrangement with Hart will protect you forever? Just wait. Every time someone else looks at you, every time another man touches you, I will feel it. And I will not stay away forever.”
With that, he turned and walked away, Viktor following closely behind, leaving a heavy silence in his wake.
Lucas let out a long breath, his arm still around me, though his grip loosened slightly. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” I said, though my heart was racing. “He just knows how to push everyone’s buttons.”
Later, as we stood alone on the balcony, away from the crowd, Lucas turned to face me, his expression more serious than before. “I know it’s just an act, Isabella. I know we agreed this is only for protection. But seeing him look at you like that… seeing anyone else get close to you… it makes me feel things I didn’t expect.”
My breath caught. “Lucas…”
“I’m not saying this to complicate things,” he added quickly, though his voice was softer now. “I just want you to know—whatever this is, I’m not pretending anymore. Not completely.”
I looked into his eyes, then thought of Damian’s burning gaze, of the way he had spoken my name with such fierce possession. Caught between two men, one who had hurt me yet still claimed to love me, and another who had started as a shield but was slowly becoming something more.
The game had changed. The lines between pretense and reality were fading, and I had no idea where this path would lead—but I knew one thing for sure: the fire of jealousy had been lit, and it would only burn hotter from here.
