Chapter three

Opelia's POV I was right. The Storm Pack had allied with another Pack and we were at a great disadvantage. It was never a good thing to have soldiers both in front of you and behind you. Our warriors were being mauled on both sides, although we were somehow able to stand our ground. "Warriors of Zoe Pack! Don't fret, we have the goddess on our side and we'll have victory. Everyone to his man! No one leaves here alive, aye?" My father screamed, doing his best to rid the people of the fear that was written all over their faces. "Aye! Aye! Aye!" There was something different about this other pack. One of them grabbed John, my childhood friend as he tried to shield me from the assailant but instead of killing him, he sank his teeth into his neck and left it in there for quite a while. Wolves didn't do that. We weren't drinkers of blood. There was only one species known for that; the nightcrawlers or vampires as some chose to call them. Vampires and werewolves have been enemies from time past and it was unfathomable that an alliance was made between the Storm pack and our sworn enemies. It was folly too as we knew that they too, would be wiped out if they managed to get the victory over us. Desperation, as my people always said, was the bedrock of folly. I saw folly play out right before me. Seeing that our warriors still had the advantage over the Storm pack, I turned around to face our real adversaries. "Come here," I screamed to Liam, our bowman, as he quickly ran to me. I grabbed his bow and silver arrows and shot at the vampires, hoping it'll be effective. It was. They fell, one by one, as the arrow struck them in the heart. They weren't easy folks to kill. It took a lot of precision. It was a good thing we were close to the forest as some of our warriors ran into the forest to pick up some wood. With their knives, they made the edges of the woods very sharp and rejoined the rest in battle. The battle grew fierce as arrows flew past with immense speed and left dead bodies in their wake. "Opelia, you have to be careful, these vamps are quite tricky and they won't shy away from playing dirty!" My father warned. I responded with a nod. I saw a huge man emerge from behind the other vampires. He wore a mask so I couldn't see his face, but his huge muscular frame, made obvious by the fact that he had no clothes on, couldn't go unnoticed. It only took a swipe from him to send a few wolves flying. He was a monstrous beast. "I dashed towards him very quickly, as I didn't want any more wolves to lose their lives. I had to take him out myself. "Stop!" My father screamed as he quickly ran to me and drew me back. My father was the fastest wolf that had ever lived. The super speed we had looked like a snail's pace when he ran. "I'll face him myself. You don't stand a chance against him." They charged at each other, screaming as they ran, as my father tackled him with his shoulder but he only moved back a bit. He was really strong. It was a move that was always successful. Somehow, this vamp made it look like nothing. Again, my dad charged at him, this time, with his trident, swinging at him with his right hand but the vamp ducked and punched my father in the face as blood spilt to the floor from his mouth. He wasn't done, he tackled my father to the ground and tried to stomp his chest but he rolled to the right to evade the attack. "This is the end for you!" He screamed, bending to pick up my father but unbeknownst to him, my father held on to the trident and stabbed his chest with it, leaving a mark in the process. The beast was unfazed and unrelenting. It was as though he took something that gave him limitless energy. In a flash, he was back on the attack and I saw him squeeze my father's neck, forcing him to kick out in pain. My father was a strong man with great principles. He was never going to scream for anyone. I tried to help out but a swipe of his left hand was all it took to get me unconscious. By the time I could get back to my feet, he was nowhere to be found. All I saw was my father, who lay lifeless on the floor, with his throat slit. "Father!!" I screamed, struggling to accept what was right in front of me. He couldn't have been dead. There was no way the great Darren 'Whitehair' could have been killed by any creature. "Wake up, father. Please, open your eyes." I shook him as hard as I could, hoping that he'd wake up but he didn't. I turned his face to the right and checked his neck to see if the vampire had bitten him. That would have given him the chance to wake up as a vampire. I didn't mind that at all. But there was nothing. He was gone and there was nothing I could do about it. It was hard to take in. I felt like my heart had been torn open by the sharpest of knives. I felt a surge of rage building up on my inside. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you, father," I cried, placing my head on his lifeless body. Tears kept running down my cheeks. "Please, forgive me. I did all I could but I wasn't strong enough. I'll make sure that there'll be no Storm Pack after today. No one would survive this, dad. I promise." I grabbed his trident in his honour and looked at the vampires and wolves that fought against us. "I'll make you all pay!" I screamed. It was time to take a lot of lives. "Opelia! Opelia!"
