Anton's POV
"Everyone's ready, Alpha. We can go now."
Damon walked in front of me as we headed to the square to take care of Pack issues. We got news about an attack on a few houses by the rogues and sent some warriors to take care of the issue. The rogues had terrorized the Mangrove Pack for about five months and I had vowed to put an end to it. The Warriors were able to track down the rogues but only managed to capture one as the others somehow escaped.
"Should we kill him tonight?" Damon had asked me as soon as they got the man in their custody. "No," I answered. "Take him to Pack Square tomorrow. I'll do the killing myself."
There was a rule that my father always told me before he died. "If you want to send a message, do it yourself." Those words sank deep into my heart. I was never one to forget my father's words of advice.
As we got to Pack square, I noticed that there were tons of people there. Voices of people, old and young were heard as they talked about things concerning the man whom we had caught. I climbed up to the podium, this time, Damon was behind me as I faced the crowd to address them.
I raised my right hand and everywhere was silent. The once noisy place became as silent as a graveyard. It was one of my favourite things; getting people to keep shut without having to say a word.
Being an Alpha was no easy task. It was something that came with a lot of responsibilities. The Alpha had to put the desires of the Pack before his. Such a tough task for anyone. Yet, it had its perks and they outweighed the negatives. Well, except for the fact that the Alpha was a target for everyone; both the people in the Pack and the ones outside. Somehow, everyone wanted the Alpha dead, especially those who craved power and the Pack's greatest enemies.
Being the most respected wolf in the Pack was a big deal. The Alpha could lay hold of any land that he chose, irrespective of who owned it. Everyone was at my call and beckon. I made decrees and they became laws in the land. I couldn't say that I wasn't happy about being Alpha. Although, there were days when I wished I wasn't.
Today was one of those. I was never a fan of executing people but I had to because it was my duty and the benefit of the entire Pack. I couldn't let the people who terrorized them walk freely in the land. They had to be taken out. Those rebels had bitten more than they could chew. They had heaped coals of fire on their heads. I had to make sure that those coals burned them from their heads to their toes.
"Wolves of Mangrove Pack!" I screamed
"All hail the Alpha! All hail the Alpha! All hail the Alpha!" They chorused, stamping their feet on the ground and beating their chests.
"Today, we're going to witness something very special. Damon! Get him here," I commanded as he left my side and walked to the warrior lord, who held the chains that the prisoner was tied with. He took the chain from the warrior lord and dragged the prisoner who was very reluctant to follow as instructed. He knew that what awaited him was certain death and although there was nothing he could do to save himself, there was always room for a trial.
As he got him to the podium, I motioned to him to lift the prisoner's face and he did. "What's your name, young lad?" I asked, gazing directly into his eyes. He was young. He was very young and I felt some pity deep down. Yet, it wasn't the time to show any form of weakness. Besides, he had broken into people's houses to forcefully seize their property and possibly take their lives if they resisted. Just a few weeks ago, five wolves were slaughtered by the rogues because they refused to buy drinks for them in a bar. He might have been one of them.
"What is your name?" I asked again, seeing that he failed to respond the first time. I didn't like asking a question twice to anyone. I certainly didn't appreciate it at all. I held him by the neck and squeezed a little.
"I'm Ronin," he finally said. "Ronin Eduardo."
Such a nice name he had. He was a handsome man too. He looked to be about 6'4 in height and was slightly well built. He seemed to have a bright future ahead of him, if only he chose to do things the right way. He didn't. Now, I had the tough job of cleansing the realm of such men.
"Today, we're going to be executing a man who had been terrorizing us so much in the Pack; he and his gang. They must have thought that they'll always get away with their crimes and make our people filled with fear in their land. The goddess has forbidden that! I will not stand by and watch these rebels take over our land. Will you?"
"Nay! Nay! Nay!" They slapped their chests once again, I could see the look on the faces of the members of the Pack. They looked so disgusted at the sight of the man. If I had let him live, those wolves were going to tear him apart themselves, sooner or later. Some of the wolves picked up stones and threw them at him, drawing a scream from his lips. Others threw fruits like oranges, apples and bananas at him as they laughed and mocked him, making scornful comments about him.
"We're going to send a strong message to all wolves who have decided to bite the fingers that fed them by opposing the authority of the land and becoming rebels. Release him from his chains!"
Damon nodded and three warriors rushed to Ronin, quickly unlocking the chains he was held bound with. They pulled him up and brought him closer to me and I held him by the neck. "Today, you'll see your Alpha, taking out a huge threat to this Pack and this is what I promise every enemy of the Pack; this is the date that awaits you all."
I lifted him up and quickly drove my hands into his chest, ripping his heart out and drawing cheers from the members of the Pack. I let his dead body drop, as his blood splattered all over the place. The people screamed and rejoiced as they saw the fall of one of the rogues that had terrorized them for so long. Yet, I didn't feel satisfied, even though I had done the right thing. I couldn't help but take pity on the young lad. If he wasn't the only one who was caught, perhaps I could have spared him.
"Let's go," I said to Damon, who nodded and quickly walked with me, side by side as we headed back to the palace. "Are you ready?"
"I'm always at your service, my Alpha."
"The Alpha King meeting starts in a few hours and we have to be at the Pack Hall on time. I hope the whole place has been made ready?" I asked.
"Yes, my Alpha. I also have another piece of news for you, sire."
"What is that, Damon?"
"I heard that the Alpha of Zoe Pack will be in attendance. We're finally going to know who it is that rules the greatest Pack in all of America…" I shot him a glare and he corrected himself. "... That's apart from our great Pack, my Alpha."
"I hope to meet him too. There are a few things I'd love us to discuss. Ensure that the guards and warriors are well prepared. These meetings usually end with bloodshed."
