THE SON OF ELIAS

1426 Words
Declan stood on the bridge long after Lara disappeared. The wind off the river cut through his jacket, cold and sharp. But he didn't move. He couldn't. His mind was stuck on one word, repeating like a broken record. Julian. Elias had a son. A copy. A legacy. And he'd been watching from the beginning. Declan pulled out his phone and called Reyes. "Lara told me something," he said. "Before she left. Elias had a son. His name is Julian. He's been raised to be exactly like his father." Reyes was silent for a moment. "Are you sure?" "She seemed sure. She said he's been watching me since the beginning." "Declan, if that's true—" "Then we've been chasing the wrong person. Lara wasn't running Elias's network. Julian is." "We need to verify this. I'll run the name through our databases. See if anything comes up." "Do that. And Reyes?" "Yeah?" "Check the prison records. See if anyone named Julian visited Elias before he died." --- Declan drove home in a fog. Claire was waiting on the porch, a blanket around her shoulders, her face tight with worry. "You were gone longer than I expected." "I had to talk to Lara." "Where is she now?" "Gone. She said she's leaving town. Not coming back." "Do you believe her?" Declan sat beside her. "I don't know. I want to. But after everything—" "After everything, trust is hard." "Yeah." Claire took his hand. "What else did she tell you?" "Elias had a son. A copy of himself. Raised in secret. Trained to carry on his work." "A son?" "His name is Julian. Lara said he's been watching me since the beginning." Claire's grip tightened. "Declan, if that's true—" "Then we're not safe. None of us are." --- The next morning, Reyes called back. "I ran the name Julian Vance through every database I have. Nothing. No birth certificate. No school records. No driver's license. It's like he doesn't exist." "Maybe he doesn't use Vance. Maybe he uses a different last name." "Maybe. Or maybe Lara was lying. Trying to throw us off." "She wasn't lying. I could see it in her eyes." "Eyes can lie, Declan." "Not hers. Not this time." Reyes sighed. "I'll keep digging. But I need you to be careful. If Julian is real, and he's been watching you, he knows your routines. Your habits. Your weaknesses." "I know." "Then act like it. Don't go anywhere alone. Don't trust anyone you don't know. And for God's sake, keep your son close." --- Declan spent the day at Claire's house. He didn't leave. Didn't answer the door. Didn't answer the phone except for calls from Reyes and Valentina. Finn was confused. He kept asking why they couldn't go to the park, to the store, to school. "Because there's a bad man," Claire told him. "And we need to stay safe until the police catch him." "Is it the same bad man from before?" "Different bad man. Same danger." Finn looked at Declan. "Dad, are you scared?" "Yes," Declan said. "But scared is good. Scared keeps you alive." --- That night, Valentina came over. She brought Jinx with her—the hacker with purple hair and a laptop that held more secrets than most government servers. "I've been digging into Elias's digital footprint," Jinx said, setting up at the kitchen table. "He was paranoid. Kept multiple backups of everything. But he also had blind spots." "What kind of blind spots?" "Personal accounts. Things he didn't want anyone else to see. Including his son." Jinx pulled up a file on her screen. "I found a encrypted folder. Took me hours to crack. It's a journal. Written by Elias. About Julian." Declan leaned over her shoulder. "Julian is seven today. He's already showing signs of superior intelligence. Faster than I was at his age. More focused. More determined. I've started his training. Memory exercises. Pattern recognition. Emotional detachment. He doesn't cry anymore when I hurt him. That's progress. He doesn't know I'm his father. He thinks I'm his doctor. That's better. Attachment is weakness. Someday, he'll be ready. Ready to take my place. Ready to continue the work. And no one will ever know he exists." Declan's stomach turned. "There's more," Jinx said. "Lots more. Years of entries." "Keep going." She scrolled through the journal. "Julian is fifteen. He's perfect. Cold. Calculating. Without empathy. Everything I ever wanted. I've taught him everything I know. The drugs. The memory transfers. The manipulation techniques. He's a faster learner than I ever was. Soon, I'll introduce him to the real world. Let him practice on subjects. Let him make his own mistakes. But first, I need to find him a target. Someone who deserves what's coming. I think I know who." The next entry was dated three years ago. Around the time Declan first walked into Elias's hospital. "Declan Cole. He's perfect. Broken by guilt. Desperate for peace. Easy to manipulate. I'm going to use him. Break him. Rebuild him. And when I'm done, Julian will watch. Julian will learn. This is his final exam." --- Declan stepped back from the computer. His hands were shaking. "He was planning this from the beginning," he said. "I was never a patient. I was a lesson." "For Julian," Valentina said. "A training exercise." "And now Elias is dead. But Julian is still out there. Still watching. Still learning." Jinx looked up. "There's one more entry. Dated the day Elias died." She read it aloud. "If you're reading this, I'm gone. But Julian is not. He knows what to do. He knows who to target. Declan Cole thinks he's free. He's not. He never will be. Because Julian isn't just my son. He's my replacement. Better than me. Smarter. More patient. And he's been watching Declan for years. Every move. Every mistake. Every weakness. The deepest eyes are watching. And they always will be." --- The room was silent. Declan stared at the screen, the words burned into his mind. The deepest eyes are watching. That phrase. Over and over. In the letters. In the photographs. In Elias's final message. It wasn't just a threat. It was a signature. Julian's signature. "We need to find him," Declan said. "Before he finds us." "How?" Valentina asked. "We don't know what he looks like. Where he lives. What name he uses." "But we know what he wants." "What?" "Me. He wants to finish what Elias started. To break me. To prove he's better than his father." Jinx started typing. "I'm running facial recognition on every security camera in the city. If Julian has been watching you, his face might be on file somewhere." "That could take days." "Then I'll work faster." --- At 3 AM, Jinx found something. A face. Caught on a traffic camera three blocks from Claire's house. The same face appeared on a convenience store camera near Finn's school. And on a ATM camera near the park where Declan took Finn on weekends. The same man. Young. Early twenties. Dark hair. Cold eyes. He looked like Elias. But younger. Sharper. More dangerous. "His name isn't Julian," Jinx said, pulling up a driver's license. "It's Julian Cross. No relation to Valentina. Different spelling. But the photo matches." "Where does he live?" "An apartment on the south side. Rented under a fake name. But I traced the payment to an account linked to Elias." Declan stood up. "I'm going there." "Declan, wait—" Valentina grabbed his arm. "You can't just go alone. He's dangerous." "I know. That's why I have to be the one to stop him." "We'll come with you." "No. This is between me and him." --- Declan drove to the apartment alone. The building was old. Dark. The hallway smelled like cigarette smoke and mold. He climbed the stairs to the third floor, his footsteps echoing off the walls. Apartment 3B. The door was unlocked. He pushed it open. The apartment was empty. No furniture. No clothes. No pictures on the walls. But on the kitchen table, a single photograph. Declan picked it up. It was a picture of Finn. Taken that morning. Through the window of Claire's house. Finn was eating breakfast. Smiling. Unaware. And on the back, in handwriting Declan recognized from the journal: I told you I'd be watching. —J Declan's blood ran cold. He spun around. The door was closed. And a man stood in the doorway. Young. Dark hair. Cold eyes. Julian. "You're late," Julian said. "I've been waiting for you."
