NICK

1635 Words
With another scream of pain, Cassandra finally shifted into a white wolf and her wolf immediately pounced on Ginger, pushing the slim girl down to the ground and hovering around her. Ginger screamed out in horror, crying her eyes out as she struggled to release herself from its grip. She shut her eyes, yelling at the top of her voice as she kicked.  She finally felt the wolf leave her and she opened her eyes to see a brown wolf fighting with the white wolf her friend had shifted into. With her mouth wide open, Ginger dropped to the ground and fainted.   The wolves howled as they battled but the brown wolf soon subdued Cassandra's wolf and Cassandra felt her body morphing back into her human form. Panting heavily, she fell to the ground, lying weakly. She could feel so much ache in her body and she was sure she would never be able to stand again, not after those bones breaking and snapping.   "I guess this is your first time shifting," she heard a deep voice say and her eyes fluttered open. There he was, a man standing in all his naked glory as he picked the pile of cloth they had seen sitting on the grass.  "You're naked!" She snapped, turning her face away from him but he only laughed, his eyes fixated on the ground as he wore his trouser. "So are you." He retorted and her eyes widened as she stared at herself, gasping when she found out that she was completely naked too. How possible! Embarrassment consumed her and she immediately cupped her breast in a bid to cover up. "Here!" The man threw his t-shirt at her, his eyes still on the ground as he tried not to look at her and she rolled her eyes, letting the shirt fall to her side. "And why should I wear that?" "Hand it over then." He shrugged and she frowned.  "Where are my cloth? What did you do to me?" She snapped. "Do to you? What can I do to you? I saved your friend's life here and helped bring you back to your senses. You should me thanking me!" He sounded angry and Cassandra glanced at Ginger who was sprawled on the ground, unconscious. A lump filled her throat as she remembered how she had almost killed her friend. She had shifted into a monster and had almost harmed her friend.  "What the hell is wrong with me?" She held her head in despair, her voice coming out raw as she struggled to hold back her tears. She had barely cried through out the years after the accident and would not begin now. "Can you just put my shirt on so we can have a proper conversation? You honestly don't have a choice. Unless, you wanna go home naked." The strange man whose back was turned to her said and she picked up the shirt, realizing that he was right. The shirt was like a mini dress on her as she stood to her feet. "I'm done." She informed and the man finally turned to look at her, a warm smile on his face as his golden-brown eyes checked her out and Cassandra frowned, pulling the hem of the shirt to cover her exposed laps. "You look good." He smirked and she rolled her eyes, wrapping her arms over her body as the chilly wind hit her bare skin. The cold felt unbearable without her hoodie.  "I reckon this is your first time shifting." The man folded his arms, and Cassandra tried not to stare at his well defined chest and toned abs. He was ripped and his body was like it was sculpted.  "What happened to me?" She asked, dying to know what exactly had happened. Where was that scary animal that had taken over her body? Where did it go? "Well, you shifted to your pure form. That's what happened. I'm Nick by the way," he offered his hand but she kept her arms wrapped around her body. "Pure form?" She asked instead and Nick slowly dropped his arm.  "Yeah, pure form. You're a werewolf. Don't you know? Even the pups know this." He rolled his eyes and Cassandra was sure she would have smacked him in the face if she wasn't so conflicted that moment. A werewolf? Of course, she had read about them and had even seen pictures of them but she had tagged all those as fiction, fantasy. She had never thought they were real and even after she got bitten by one, she never truly paid attention to it.   "A werewolf?" She repeated and Nick nodded, wiping his bang from his face. "Yea. But I wonder what kind of werewolf you are, seeing as you're just having your first shift now. That should have happened a long time ago. I'm sure your pack isn't so proud of you." He teased but with the blank expression on her face, he knew she hadn't gotten his joke. "What pack are you from?" "Pack?" Cassandra narrowed her eyes in confusion.  "Yes, pack." Nick sounded exasperated.  "What's that?" She asked and he sighed.  "It seems you are a very dumb wolf." He shook his head, making way to walk past her but she held him by the wrist, dragging him back to look at her.  "I'm not dumb!" She spoke through gritted teeth. "I'm a lot smarter than you can ever know, Ginger could have attested to that if she wasn't lying on the grass." "Then why are you asking me dumb questions?" He pursued and she almost yelled. "Because I'm confused. Up till the time we walked into this bush, I was living my life as a human. Werewolf? What's that? I've always been a human and I don't transform into some beast. This just happened now and I'm trying my best not to freak out. I'm sure this is all because of this useless bite on my arm. I wonder what that beast did to me!" She blurted out and Nick's face morphed into that of surprise.  "You got bitten by a werewolf?" He asked. "I guess so." She muttered and he gasped.  "Do you know who it was?" "I won't be here if I did. I got bitten and passed out. I found myself in the hospital afterwards. I don't know who did this to me." Cassandra sighed in defeat and Nick stared at her quietly for a while, his intense golden-brown eyes trying to figure her out. "It's dangerous for a werewolf to exist without a pack. You've gotta join a pack soon." He finally stated and Cassandra's eyes narrowed.  "Where am I supposed to get one?" She asked and he grinned. "You can come join us. I know the alpha won't be so happy to see you, but he'll get used to it. He really can't say no to a homeless wolf." "I'm not homeless. I have a home." "Indeed," Nick laughed and Cassandra's fist balled in annoyance.  "I guess we gotta erase the memory of your friend if you don't want to scare her and your family." He informed and Cassandra watched as he walked to where Ginger was lying. "If you erase her memory, how will she survive?" "Not all of it. Only the time she watched you transform." Nick said, bringing out a small wand from his pocket.   "So werewolves can do that too." "Nope. I'm just a special kind of wolf with a wand. My mum was a witch, you know? She gifted me a wand on my birthday." He winked at her and she rolled her eyes, watching as he spun the wand till it began to illuminate. He stroke Ginger slightly on the head thrice, muttering inaudible words, before rising to his full length.  "That should do," he turned to Cassandra and Cassandra nodded.   "She should be up any moment from now." He informed and Cassandra nodded again. "Thank you." She appreciated and he nodded. "I gotta go now. I only wanted to have a run. I never knew I'd be meeting some naive wolf on my way." He smirked and Cassandra scoffed. "You can return my shirt when you join our pack!" He began walking away and Cassandra rolled her eyes at his retreating figure.  "I'm never joining your pack." She retorted and he shrugged.  "Suit yourself," he brought a hand to the air with his back turned to her and waved. Cassandra scoffed again, opening her mouth to say something back but the slight moan she heard made her rush to Ginger who was trying to sit up. "What happened?" She asked, placing a palm to her head. "Umm. . .you fell and passed out. I've been trying to bring you back to life. I guess your body is weak from all those walking. We really should head back home." Cassandra said, her eyes on Nick's retreating figure as he disappeared from her sight.  "Oh! Dad's watch! Did you find it?" Ginger shot to her feet, dusting the grasses that had stuck to her dress and adjusting her pair of glasses. "I just said you passed out!" Cassandra groaned. "Don't you remember falling to the ground?" "I don't. I wonder why I fell."  Cassandra heaved a sigh of relief, relieved that whatever spell Nick cast had worked. But when Ginger spoke again, she froze. "Why are you on that t-shirt? Where did you get that from?" She asked, her eyes scrutinizing the shirt on her friend's body. "Hmm, does that even matter now? We need to head back home. You collapsed because you're weak so you need to rest. We'll come back later in the day to check for the watch. Now, let's go." Cassandra pulled her friend by the wrist and together they left.
