The Shape of Ownership

Ezra POV There were many ways to measure loyalty. Most fools believed loyalty was proven in battle—in blood spilled, in enemies slain, in victories delivered at the feet of power. They believed loyalty was loud, visible, dramatic. They were wrong. True loyalty revealed itself in smaller moments. In hesitation. In restraint. In the absence of indulgence. Colson had begun to hesitate. Not openly. Not enough that anyone else would notice. But I was not anyone else. I had created him—not from birth, but from purpose. I had found him when he was little more than an angry, feral thing clawing its way through existence without direction, without belonging, without meaning. I had given him structure. I had given him power. I had given him purpose. And in return… He had given me everything. Or he had. Until now. I stood above the nightclub floor, watching him move through the bodies below like a shadow that had learned how to breathe. Humans laughed around him, unaware of how close they stood to becoming nothing more than memory. Vampires nodded respectfully as he passed, recognizing in him the quiet lethality that separated predators from prey. He was still perfect. Still controlled. Still mine. And yet… He did not feed. He did not indulge. He did not play. He observed. That was new. Colson had always indulged. He had always embraced the darker pleasures of his existence without hesitation or apology. He had reveled in fear, in control, in the delicate, fragile moment when hope collapsed in another creature’s eyes. Now he watched. Detached. Measured. Controlled. Restraint was a disease. Restraint meant thought. Thought meant independence. Independence meant disobedience waiting to happen. I descended slowly from the balcony, allowing my presence to spread ahead of me like poison in still water. Creatures moved instinctively as I approached, stepping aside without conscious thought. They felt it. Power did not need to announce itself. Power was recognized. He noticed me immediately. Of course he did. He turned, inclining his head in perfect, practiced respect. “My lord.” His voice was steady. Unshaken. Convincing. But convincing was not the same as true. “I have a task for you,” I said calmly. He did not ask what it was. He never did. That was why he was valuable. “The club requires new blood,” I continued. His expression did not change. “You will go to the human district.” Still nothing. “You will bring me four girls.” I stepped closer. “Young.” Precise. “No older than twenty-one.” A pause. So small most would never see it. But I did. “I want the unwilling ones,” I said softly. Fear enhanced everything. Fear broke creatures properly. Fear reminded them of truth. He inclined his head. “As you wish.” Perfect words. Perfect obedience. But obedience could lie. Action revealed truth. He disappeared into the night. I waited. I always waited. Time did not threaten me. Time belonged to me. — The human district was a wound that never healed. It festered quietly at the edge of the city, its streets cracked and dim, its buildings sagging under the weight of forgotten hope. Humans moved through it like ghosts, their shoulders hunched, their eyes lowered, their instincts whispering truths they refused to accept. They knew. They always knew. Colson moved among them unseen. Silent. Precise. He selected carefully. Not randomly. Never randomly. The first was a girl leaving her workplace, her exhaustion slowing her reactions just enough that she never saw him until his hand closed around her throat. She tried to scream. He did not allow it. The second was walking alone, her footsteps hurried, her breathing uneven as she sensed danger without understanding it. She fought harder. He subdued her effortlessly. The third tried to run. Running was always futile. The fourth begged immediately. Begging never mattered. Their fear filled the air as he gathered them, their bodies trembling uncontrollably, their minds fracturing under the weight of understanding. They knew what he was. They knew what awaited them. He brought them to me alive. He always followed instructions. When he returned, they barely resembled creatures capable of hope. Their breathing was erratic. Their hands shook violently. Their eyes darted desperately around the chamber as he forced them into the cages below the club. The moment the door slammed shut behind them, they broke. One collapsed entirely, her sobs echoing through the chamber. Another pressed herself against the bars, her fingers clawing uselessly at iron that would never yield. Another whispered prayers. Another stared at Colson with desperate, fragile hope. Hope was always the first thing to die. I stepped forward slowly, allowing them to see me fully. Their fear deepened instantly. Good. Very good. “Well done,” I said softly to him. He inclined his head. Waiting. Obedient. But still… Wrong. “You may choose first,” I said. Their terror exploded. They begged. Cried. Promised anything. Everything. It did not matter. I lowered myself into the chair positioned deliberately at the center of the chamber. Watching. Studying. Testing. “Break one,” I said quietly. He stepped forward. Slow. Controlled. The girl closest to him recoiled violently as his hand closed around her arm. She screamed. Her heartbeat filled the chamber. Fast. Fragile. Alive. He leaned down. Paused. Again. That pause. So small. So brief. So wrong. He bit her. She gasped. Her body went rigid. Then slack. He fed. But not deeply. Not indulgently. Not like before. He was performing. Pretending. Lying. And I saw it. I smiled slowly from my chair. Because now I knew. Something in my vampire had changed. Something dangerous. Something temporary. Because everything could be corrected. Everything could be broken again. Everything could be made to remember who it belonged to. And I would remind him. Slowly. Thoroughly. Completely. Because no matter what he believed… Colson was mine. And I would make certain he never forgot.
