MAYA’S CALL

513 Words
I stared at Daniel’s phone.Maya was calling. For a moment, I didn’t know what to do.Daniel had disappeared. Chris had just told me there was someone else in the car.And now Maya was calling.I picked up the phone. “Hello?” Silence. Then a shaky voice answered. “Amara?” “Yes.” “Where is Daniel?” “I don’t know. He was here a minute ago.” There was a pause. “You need to listen to me carefully.” My heart began racing. “Why?” “Because Daniel is in danger.” I looked around. “From who?” “I can’t tell you over the phone.” “Then tell me where you are.” “I’ll meet you tomorrow.” “Tomorrow? No. I need answers now.” “Amara, please.” Her voice sounded frightened. “There are things about the accident Daniel doesn’t know.” I frowned. “What do you mean?” “I wasn’t completely honest with him.” “About what?” Another silence. Then she whispered, “Chris wasn’t the person driving.” My eyes widened. “Then who was?” Before she could answer, the call ended. I stared at the screen. Then I noticed something. There was a message on Daniel’s phone. From Chris. You should have left her alone. My hands trembled.I immediately called Daniel. No answer. Again. Nothing.I tried a third time.Straight to voicemail.I didn’t know what to do. Then I remembered what Maya had said.Daniel is in danger.I looked toward the road. Nothing. Just cars passing by.I held Daniel’s phone tightly.I should have been scared. I was.But underneath the fear was something stronger. I needed to know the truth. Not rumors. Not warnings. Not half-truths.The truth. The next morning, I arrived at school earlier than usual.Maya was waiting near the gate. She looked different from the pictures.Older somehow. Tired. She walked toward me. “You came.” I nodded. “You said you had answers.” She looked around before speaking. “Daniel wasn’t supposed to be at the party that night.” “Why?” “Because I invited him.” I frowned. “What happened?” She took a deep breath. “Before the accident, Daniel and I had an argument.” “About what?” “Chris.” My heart stopped. “What about him?” Maya looked directly into my eyes. “Chris knew Daniel was going to tell me something that night.” “What?” She lowered her voice. “That Chris had been lying to both of us.” Before I could ask anything else, someone grabbed Maya’s arm. We both screamed. I turned. Daniel was standing there. His face was tense. “Maya.” She pulled away. “You shouldn’t have come.” Daniel looked at me. Then at Maya. “What did you tell her?” Maya stared at him. “The truth.” Daniel’s expression changed. “What truth?” Maya looked at me. Then she whispered, “The truth about who was really driving that night.” And Daniel went completely silent.
