STAY AWAY FROM ME

523 Words
I couldn’t stop staring at the message. If you want Amara safe, stay away from her. My name. Why was someone threatening me because of Daniel?I looked at him. “Who is doing this?” “I don’t know.” “You’re lying.” “I’m not.” “Then why do you look so scared?” Daniel ran a hand through his hair. “Because I don’t want anything happening to you.” I stepped closer. “Then tell me what’s going on.” He shook his head. “Not here.” “Where, then?” “Somewhere safe.” I almost laughed. “Safe? Someone is already threatening me, Daniel!” “I know.” “Then stop treating me like I can’t handle the truth.” He looked at me for a long moment. “You don’t understand.” “Then make me understand.” He opened his mouth, but before he could speak, footsteps sounded behind us. We both turned. Nobody was there. Daniel immediately grabbed my hand. “Come on.” I pulled my hand away. “Don’t.” He stopped.I could see the worry in his eyes. “I just want to get you home.” “I can get home myself.” “Amara—” “No.” I walked away. This time, he didn’t follow me. ⸻ The next morning, something was waiting inside my locker.A small folded piece of paper. My hands trembled as I opened it. There were only four words.Ask him about the accident.I froze. What accident?I immediately looked down the hallway.Students were everywhere. But nobody was watching me.Or at least, nobody I could see.I folded the paper and put it inside my notebook. Then I heard a voice behind me. “Amara.” I turned. Daniel. He looked at me. Then he noticed the paper in my hand. “What is that?” “Nothing.” His expression changed. “Did they message you again?” I didn’t answer. He stepped closer. “Amara, please.” I looked directly into his eyes. “What accident?” He went completely silent. And that was all the answer I needed. There was an accident. And Daniel knew about it.His face had gone pale. “Who told you?” I shook my head. “You knew.” He looked away. “Daniel…” “I was going to tell you.” “When?” He didn’t answer. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because I was scared.” “Of what?” He finally looked at me. “Of you finding out the truth.” My heart pounded. “What truth?” Before he could answer, the school bell rang. Students began rushing past us. Daniel stepped closer and lowered his voice. “Meet me after school.” “Why?” “Because you deserve to know everything.” He walked away.I stood there, watching him disappear into the crowd. For the first time, I wasn’t wondering whether someone was hiding something from me.I was wondering how much of Daniel’s past had been built on a lie. And what the accident had to do with Maya.
