THE CALL

534 Words
Chris stopped a few steps away from us.Nobody spoke. Daniel moved in front of me. “Stay away from her.” Chris laughed quietly. “You still think you can protect her?” Daniel’s jaw tightened. “What do you want?” Chris looked at Maya. “I want her to keep her mouth shut.” Maya stepped backward. “I’ve already told them.” Chris’s smile disappeared. “You shouldn’t have.” I held Daniel’s arm. “What exactly are you hiding?” Chris looked at me. “You really want to know?” “Yes.” He took another step forward.Daniel blocked him. “Don’t.” Chris looked at Daniel and shook his head. “You’ve always been too curious.” “I’m not scared of you.” “You should be.” Daniel stared at him. “Did you cause the accident?” Chris didn’t answer. That silence was enough. My heart sank. “You did, didn’t you?” Chris looked at me. “I didn’t cause anything.” “Then why are you threatening Maya?” “Because she knows too much.” “What does she know?” Chris smiled. “She knows what happened before the accident.” Daniel stepped closer. “Tell me.” Chris looked directly into his eyes. “You’re not ready to hear it.” “Try me.” Chris hesitated. Then he said quietly, “You weren’t the target.” Daniel froze. “What?” “You were never supposed to be in that car.” Maya covered her mouth. I looked at her. “What does that mean?” She whispered, “Chris was looking for someone else.” Chris glared at her. “Maya.” But she continued. “He thought Amara would be there that night.” My heart stopped. “Me?” Daniel immediately turned toward me. “What?” Maya nodded. “Chris wasn’t trying to hurt Daniel.” She looked at Chris. “He was trying to scare Amara.” I couldn’t breathe. “Why?” Chris suddenly looked nervous. For the first time, his confidence disappeared.Daniel noticed it too. “Why her?” Chris stepped backward. “I have nothing else to say.” Daniel grabbed his arm. “You’re not going anywhere.” Chris pulled away. “Let me go.” “No.” Chris pushed Daniel. Daniel stumbled backward.I screamed. Maya grabbed my hand. “Run!” We started moving toward the exit. Then Chris shouted behind us. “Amara!” I stopped. He looked at me. “There is something you need to know.” I turned around. “What?” His face had gone completely serious. “The person who ordered the accident…” He paused. “…is someone you trust.” My blood ran cold. Daniel stared at him. “Who?” Chris looked at me. And before he could say the name— The school bell rang. Students began pouring into the hallway.Chris disappeared into the crowd. I stood there frozen.Daniel came beside me. “Amara…” I barely heard him.Because one question was running through my mind. Who do I trust? And suddenly… I wasn’t sure I could trust anyone.
