Unexpected Encounter

The insistent barking pulled Ethan from his reverie. He peered out the window, frowning. A scruffy mutt, a motley collection of brown and white fur, was yapping at a sleek black car that had pulled up across the street. The car window rolled down, revealing a girl around his age with fiery red hair. She glared at the dog, her face a mask of annoyance. "Seriously, get lost," she muttered, more to herself than to the dog. The dog, undeterred, continued its barking, circling the car with an air of defiance. Ethan watched, a flicker of amusement stirring within him. This girl had some spunk. Suddenly, the car door swung open and the girl stepped out, her heels clicking angrily on the wet pavement. She marched towards the dog, her face a mask of annoyance. "Seriously, this is ridiculous," she muttered, adjusting her sunglasses. She tried to shoo the dog away with a dismissive wave of her hand. But the dog, instead of running, simply sat down, its tail wagging expectantly. It looked at the girl with an almost comical expression, as if daring her to do something. The girl, taken aback, stumbled slightly. "What in the world..." she muttered, her annoyance replaced by a look of bewildered amusement. Ethan, unable to resist any longer, opened the window. "He's just playing," he said, his voice a little hoarse from disuse. The girl looked up, startled. She regarded him with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity. "And you know that, do you?" Ethan shrugged, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. "He seems harmless enough." The girl hesitated, then surprised him by squatting down. "Here, boy," she coaxed, extending a cautious hand. To Ethan's amazement, the dog, after a moment of hesitation, nudged her hand with its nose and licked her fingers. The girl laughed, a genuine, infectious sound. "Well, I'll be." She looked at Ethan again. "Thanks. I think." Ethan nodded, a strange warmth spreading through him. It had been a long time since he'd felt this… alive. The girl, after a few more minutes of playful banter with the dog, finally got back in her car and drove away. She rolled down the window and gave Ethan a small wave. "See you around?" she asked, a mischievous glint in her eyes. Ethan nodded, a lingering question in his mind. Who was that girl? And why did he feel a strange sense of anticipation, a flicker of something akin to excitement, stirring within him?
