9 DAYBREAK John woke up, a demon's name in his mind, and a dog's tongue on his face. It was slightly troubling what a man could get used to in his life. The dog's tongue was too wet, and the demon's name was too full of consonants. He knew which one he preferred, and which one would serve him the best. He arose from the bedroll and stoked up the cooking fire. He set the grating in a prime position and set the old iron skillet in the middle of its top. The percolator went into the fire alongside the grating, and a few slices of bacon went in the skillet to cook. He set the second skillet containing butter on the fire. A couple of slices of bread went on top of the butter, to serve as the carbohydrate side for breakfast. While the breakfast cooked, John caught up on his journal writing,
