16 THE WALKING There was a creek about ten feet away from Charlie's campfire. He had an iron stool, minus its seat, in the flames as a cooking stand, and an iron skillet was on it, with some chops frying away in it. Sitting on a nearby card table was a pot with something green in it, and a bowl of what appeared to be oversized blackberries. "I hope that everyone is hungry," Charlie said, as he fished the chops out of the skillet with a two-prong barbecue fork. He proceeded to fill six paper plates with some of the greens, a chop on each, and a triangle of cornbread that he had hidden in a nearby pie plate. "Have at it," Charlie ordered, as he demonstrated the proper demolition of the food on his plate. The others all dug in and found that the chops were fat and tasty, and the greens ha
