Chapter 4 - SIREN

There had been a smile on her face. Even after I enchanted her it had remained…Taunting me…A little human, looking so peaceful…Walking into the jaws of death… The land beyond my window is bathed in darkness. The night sky full of cheerful blinking stars. My world is serene. I want to keep it that way. The corruption beyond the Dreamscape should be kept out… “Knight requests an audience with you.” I turn around. A lot of mes turn around in my mirror walls. Every one of them equally furious. Knight’s affection for Rosa has always been a thorn in my side. I don’t know what charm she is putting him under but it is interfering with his loyalties. Maybe I should drop him a hint saying that Rosa will disappear soon enough. The wheels are in motion. But  I fear that the fool would be tempted to sacrifice himself for her. “Tell him to come in.” The frightened little thing that brought me the news scampers away. A small smile of satisfaction curls on my lips. Yes… run… A single spell of mine can destroy you so… “The two girls are taken care of.” Knight comes in. His unhappiness is clear. She is corrupting him…And no matter how much I try to explain it to him he does not listen. “You destroyed two lives so she…” “We will not discuss this Siren.” “Is she worth all the turmoil? Maybe…” “She is and that’s the last word I have to say on the subject.” I resist the urge to scoff and just yell at him. What good would that do? Pushing him further towards Rosa’s simplistic compassionate heart? In this world, kindness ensures your death. It is a magnet for violence. Her position as Guardian welcomes violence and… “Next thing I want you to do is to contact the Witches…” “What!” “Rosa will not agree to this, I know.” “Neither do I!” His outburst surprises me. As do the emotion in his eyes. Something has changed. And I have a bad feeling that it has nothing to do with Rosa this time.  “They are savages who feed on blood and flesh for magic. Letting them into our world is suicide.” “That is a lie.” I watch the fear spread on his face. Desperate eyes darting through the room looking for an excuse. A soft laugh escapes my lips. “You couldn’t do it, could you? Those girls are alive and if the Witches set foot inside the woods, they would sniff them out in an instant.” Knight’s lower lip quivered “They are children. One of them has only a few days left to live. The older one is beside herself thinking of it.” “Is that so? And what happens when these two innocent things grow up? What happens, Knight?” “Siren…” “They start to s*******r, plunder, and t*****e. They become monsters.” He starts to open his mouth but I raise my hand. “You deserve punishment for this.” “As you wish…” He bows his head. It angers me that he doesn’t protest. His resignation suggesting that he did the right thing. And worst of all there is no fear. No at all… “Bring me the little one,” I say. His eyes widen. I smile at the fear now enveloping his body like a cloud. He should know what is next. Of course… “And bring me, Rosa.” “Siren…no…” ‘Oh! Don’t worry, Knight. I am not going to kill her. I am merely allowing her to save the child’s life…"
