(Layla’s POV)
*
I blinked my eyes open groggily. The world felt like it was spinning around me as I tried to make sense of my surroundings. I could sense I was in a hospital due to the antiseptic scent and the sound of monitor beeping.
Although everything felt fuzzy, I could tell I was on a hospital bed. And next to me was.. hold on. I blinked my eyes a few times thinking I might be dead.
A man was seated next to my bed, looking like some kind of Greek God who accidentally wandered into a mere mortal’s life. His jawline was looking so sharp that it could probably slice through butter. I could see his long legs and most likely this broad-shouldered man was tall. Definitely taller than me.
“Hey, there” the man had a sexy voice too, flashing a charming smile at me. My sedated brain tried to process what was happening.
‘Was I in heaven? A hospital in heaven?’
Before I could say anything that would embarrass me, a nurse walked in, looking from the insanely handsome man and back to me. She smiled, “Well, I see she’s finally awake”
The nurse walked closer to my bed and checked on my vital signs. She then said to me in a cheerful way, “He has been such a devoted boyfriend, staying by your side”
My eyebrows furrowed. Boyfriend?
I turned to look at the handsome stranger, who was also looking confused. “Oh, nurse.. I’m not –”
I did not know what had gotten in my head, but I felt the need to tease him a little, “He’s a keeper, isn’t he? Look at that cute face of his. Definitely an upgrade from the last one I had”
I giggled, followed by a hiccupped. “It is definitely the drugs talking” I heard him say and cleared his throat.
“He has not left your side for at least an hour or two” hearing the nurse said that I gasped remembering I had an interview to attend!
“An hour?!” I then cursed in all language that I knew off that made both the nurse and the handsome man looked at me with shock. “I need to go. I have an appointment to attend to”
I tried to get up but the nurse had told me although my injury was not that severe, I still needed some rest before I could be discharged. When the nurse left, I sighed and looked around to see what time it was.
“Thank you, ummph –” I paused hoping he would tell me his name, but he looked at me with his familiar looking blue eyes. But I could not recall where I had seen them.
I did not dare to make any eye contact for longer than three seconds as every time I looked at him, it was as if I was looking at some commercial advertisement in slow motion.
Even his small laugh sounded like it had been engineered in a lab for some maximum swoon impact. I shook my head and closed my eyes for a moment to snap back to reality.
After I calmed my nerves, I looked at him again trying hard to look natural, “Thank you, whatever your name is”
“You don’t remember me, do you?” he asked and looked like he was expecting me to say yes.
I opened my mouth, but no words came out. I then shook my head not knowing who he was.
The man shook his head and looked a little disappointed. Then, he got up and I held my breath seeing how perfectly sculptured his body was behind the suit he was wearing. “I hope you get better. I better get going now. Not to worry, I have paid your hospital bill”
I nodded and got up in a seating position, “Thank you”
I wanted to standup but realise that my head was still a little dizzy from the medication. As I was about to slip down on the floor, I felt a strong arm lifting me up. Obviously, the close touch we had made me blush.
My heart was pounding fast up to my throat. With our faces just inches apart, my lips trembled when I muttered my words, “Don’t make me ask for your number twice. I would gladly repay you in the future over dinner. After of course, I get a job”
He chuckled to my words and flashed a smile that did not just light up the room, but it could probably cause a brief power surge across Celeste Town. I bit my lips as he placed my feet gently on the ground.
He walked by my side all the way to the entrance, with his arms across my shoulder ensuring I would not fall again. For some reason, we did not say much. I took a glimpse at him and saw him looking as if he was thinking about something. From the way he was dressed, I could guess he was a wealthy and respected man. Whoever his girlfriend was could be a lucky girl in town.
“Hey, you! Get your hands off my wife!” my eyes looked around knowing well who said those words. Max had arrived looking disheveled and angry seeing me with another man.
“Is he truly your husband?”
“We are divorced” I said confidently not caring about Max staring at me as if he was going to strangle my neck.
“We are still married, Layla”
“You were supposed to sign the papers. To me, we are done!” I turned my head to the side looking at the handsome man, “You can go now. I can handle this imbecile that will be my soon to be ex-husband. Thank you for your help”
Before he let go off my shoulder for support, Max had grabbed my wrist, forcing me to follow me, “Let go of me, Max. We are at a hospital. Do not embarrass me!”
“You come with me right now, Layla”
“NO!”
“The lady said no. Let her go” I was happy to see my knight in shining armour was still around to protect me.
“f**k off!” I gasped seeing Max swing his arm to punch the handsome man’s perfect face.
“STOP!” I shouted and moved to the side when the two men broke into a fight.
