Chapter 4 - Secrets and scars

1906 Words
After two days of silence, the resort had started to feel heavier. Nicole’s phone remained untouched by Derek’s texts and calls. The tension was palpable—Simpiwe and Jessica whispered, exchanged glances, and silently judged, noticing how strange it was that Nicole and Derek weren’t speaking. Everyone else was socializing, laughing, and reminiscing about high school memories, but these two—Nicole and Derek—sat apart like strangers on the same plane. Nicole, emotionally drained and missing Adam terribly, decided she needed fresh air. She slipped past the gathering crowd, moving toward the resort’s dam under the warm Cape Town evening sky. She dialed Adam’s number. Her fingers shook slightly as she pressed call, her heart racing at the thought of speaking to him. “Nicole? Baby, are you okay?” Adam’s voice was calm, loving, concerned. “I… yeah… I’m fine,” she replied, trying to sound normal, “It’s just been… a lot of parties, a lot of people. I’ve been busy. That’s why I didn’t answer your calls. I… I miss you.” Adam’s voice softened. “I miss you too. Don’t worry, baby. It’s just a few more days. I’ll see you soon.” After the call ended, Nicole leaned against the railing, staring at the dam’s smooth, reflective water, her thoughts spinning. She tried to calm herself, but a familiar scent hit her from behind. A deep, masculine cologne that made her pulse quicken. “Derek?” she asked, stiffening, turning around. He was there, standing close, impossibly close. The tension between them crackled like electricity. “I told you, Derek… this is over,” she said, trying to keep her voice firm, her arms crossed defensively. Derek didn’t speak. He stepped forward, the night around them silent except for the distant murmur of water and insects. His eyes locked on hers. Slowly… irresistibly… he leaned in. Their lips met in a kiss that shattered her resolve. Derek’s hands cupped her face, deepening the kiss, as he whispered between breaths, “Nicole… I’ve loved you for so long. I can’t stop loving you. I can’t keep away. I’m addicted to you. I… I can’t lose you again.” Nicole’s knees nearly buckled. She tried to pull away, to resist—but the magnetism was overwhelming. She melted against him, letting herself go, responding with the same intensity. Their kiss was long, consuming, urgent, and for the first time, Nicole admitted to herself that she felt exactly the same. For hours—or maybe it was only moments—they existed in that bubble of desire and confession. The outside world ceased. Nicole had fully accepted her feelings. She wasn’t denying it anymore: she loved Derek. Eventually, Derek guided her back to her suite. They were both flushed, intoxicated by each other’s presence, and settled into a natural, intimate closeness. That night, they slept together, a quiet, stolen couple in a chaotic world. Meanwhile, Adam had received good news from his doctor: he was fit to travel. His heart raced with excitement. He was going to surprise Nicole at the reunion, unaware that she was no longer waiting for him. Packing his clothes, meticulously folding shirts and suits, he imagined the look on her face when she saw him arrive. Every piece of luggage, every neatly folded suit, represented a hope, a plan—to reunite with his fiancée and make up for the days he’d missed. He had no idea that Nicole’s thoughts were no longer just for him, that Derek had taken over her heart and body for the last two days. The contrast could not have been sharper: Adam, prepared and excited, and Nicole… lost in Derek. The last five days had become a rhythm—a secret rhythm, a hidden ritual between Nicole and Derek. From dawn until dusk, they stole moments together in every corner of the resort: in each other’s suites, in the quiet intimacy of the shower, in the soft grass by the dam, under the velvet sky as stars bore witness to their forbidden passion. They had become untouchable to everyone else, a couple that existed in a bubble only they knew about. Nicole’s fiancé, Adam, was a distant thought, a memory she pushed aside as desire consumed her. That Friday, however, fate had other plans. Nicole’s suite was dimly lit, the evening sun slipping through the blinds. Derek was behind her, holding her close, every touch igniting fires she could not contain. Their bodies moved in sync, in tune with the rhythm of each other’s heartbeats. Every sigh, every gasp, was a testament to their obsession, their unspoken addiction. The world outside ceased to exist. Outside, Adam’s flight had landed hours earlier. Full of excitement, his heart racing at the thought of surprising Nicole, he could hardly wait to see her. Every step he took toward the resort was fueled by longing, by the thrill of seeing his fiancée after days apart. He didn’t know. He couldn’t have known. Bursting through the door, his wide smile froze instantly. “Ta-da!” he shouted— And then, silence. Nicole froze. Derek froze. The world seemed to stop as Adam’s gaze fell on the scene before him: Nicole in Derek’s arms, Derek’s hands tracing the curves Adam thought only he knew, the intimate closeness that belonged exclusively to him—now shattered before his eyes. Adam’s breath caught. His chest tightened. Words failed him. Disbelief, heartbreak, anger—all collided in a single moment. His smile had vanished, replaced by stunned horror. “Nicole…?” His voice was barely a whisper, trembling with something between confusion and devastation. Nicole’s eyes widened, panic flooding her features. Tears pooled as she scrambled to cover herself, her voice breaking, frantic: “B-babe! It’s not… it’s not what you think! Babe, I—” Derek’s face was taut with guilt. He opened his mouth, trying to explain, trying to say something, anything—but even his words felt hollow, inadequate against the reality before them. For a heartbeat, none of them moved. The secret, the passion, the forbidden lust—all lay bare in front of the man Nicole loved and had been loyal to… until now. And just like that, everything froze. Adam’s fists clenched so tight that his knuckles turned white. His chest heaved, and his voice trembled—first in disbelief, then in fury, and finally in uncontrollable rage. “No… no, Nicole! How could you do this to me?!” he shouted, his voice bouncing off the walls of the suite. “We’ve been together for five years… FIVE FREAKING YEARS! While I was at home, injured, suffering, YOU DO THIS?!” Derek froze, his eyes wide, the guilt practically radiating from him. “Adam—” “No!” Adam cut him off, his voice sharp, slicing through the air. “I consider you a brother, Derek! We’ve been friends for how long? And this… THIS is what you do? You… you—” He swallowed, shaking with rage, pointing at Nicole. “You go and f**k my own girl! My woman! My wife-to-be!” Nicole tried to stand, to explain, but Adam’s words hit her like a tidal wave. “Adam, I—” “You WHAT, Nicole?!” he roared. “I trusted you! I loved you! I put everything on hold for you, and THIS is what I find?!” The yelling echoed through the resort. Outside, other guests and classmates stopped mid-laugh, heads turning. Simpiwe’s eyes narrowed immediately. “Oohhh… sounds like someone’s in trouble,” she whispered to Jessica, smirking. They followed the noise, curiosity—and mischief—pulling them toward the suite. What they saw froze them in place. Derek and Nicole, caught in the heat of the moment, were still entangled. “Nicole… Derek…” Jessica whispered, her jaw dropping. Simpiwe’s smirk turned vicious. “I’m not even surprised,” she said loudly, holding up her phone. The screen played the video she had captured the previous night during Spin the Bottle—their stolen kiss, their intoxicated desire laid bare. Nicole whipped her head around. “YOU b***h! How could you—why would you take a video of me?!” she screamed, rushing forward, but Adam’s glare pinned her in place. Adam’s face was red, his chest rising and falling violently. “I don’t want to hear it, Nicole. I don’t want excuses. I don’t want lies. I don’t want to hear ANYTHING!” Nicole tried, desperate: “Babe… it was a game! It meant nothing! I swear, I love you! I love YOU!” Adam’s eyes flashed with betrayal, fury, and heartbreak all at once. “I don’t care! You’re a liar! A w***e! A… a—” His voice cracked, and the world seemed to tilt around them. Derek tried to speak again, his tone guilty, pained. “Adam, I—” “No! I can’t look at either of you right now!” Adam yelled. “You’re both—ugh! I trusted you! Both of you! You’ve been busy… behind my back?!” Nicole’s tears fell freely now. “Adam, babe, I swear it was a mistake! It just happened! I didn’t mean—” Adam turned on Derek with pure venom. “And you, Derek! You—my friend—my brother—you’re supposed to be loyal! How could you betray me like this?!” Simpiwe laughed cruelly, almost gleeful. “Told you so. And now he sees the truth. Finally. You thought you were slick, Nicole.” Nicole, trembling and angry, lunged at Simpiwe. “YOU—how could you?! Why would you do this?!” Simpiwe just smiled coldly. “Because the world deserves to see the truth. And now? You’re exposed. Plain as day.” Adam’s hands shook. He stepped closer to Nicole, his voice low but deadly. “I… I can’t… I can’t even process this. I trusted you! ALL OF YOU! How could you—how could you?” Nicole’s voice broke. “Adam, please… it’s not what you think… I—” “I DON’T CARE!” Adam shouted, his voice echoing like thunder. “I. Don’t. Care. I am DONE with the lies, Nicole. DONE!” Simpiwe held up her phone again, replaying the kiss. “Just a reminder… it wasn’t a one-time thing. They’ve been busy, Adam. Busy!” Nicole’s body shook, shame and guilt overtaking her. “Babe… please, I’m so sorry! It was just… it was just a mistake! I swear, I love you. I love YOU!” But Adam’s eyes were ice. “I don’t want to hear it! I don’t want to see either of you for a while… or maybe ever!” He turned on his heel, storming out of the suite, leaving Nicole and Derek paralyzed, the weight of their actions crashing down like a tidal wave. Simpiwe laughed, whispering to Jessica as they trailed behind. “Well… that’s gonna be messy.” Nicole sank to the floor, sobbing. Derek’s hands hovered helplessly, unsure if he should comfort her or sink further into his own guilt. Their secret, their passion, their stolen ritual—it had all blown up, and there was no turning back now. The room was silent, except for the sound of Nicole’s quiet sobs and Derek’s heavy breathing. Outside, the resort buzzed unknowingly… but nothing would ever be the same.
