Should I go to the police?
Who else can help me? But what if the police acts just like the hospital staff?
Can I believe them? Can I trust anyone belonging to this crooked town?
Contemplating on my options, I decide to call Tucker. He's the only one I can trust, I've known him for all my life.
I dial his number. He picks up as soon as the first bell rings.
" Hello, Tucker? I have- " I spit out but my words are cut in short.
" Oh Ellie, this is Anna. " I hear a high-pitched sound on the other side of the phone.
" Where is Tucker? " I question my heart racing due to the on growing anxiety. My voice breaking down, my throat completely dry.
" He is right beside me! " She exclaims in a joyous voice.
" Can you please pass the phone to him? I have something important to tell him. I don't have much time to waste Anna! " I growl in frustration.
" God, why are you screaming at me? " She whines. Taking it on herself.
" Hey Ellie, what's the rush? Why are you getting mad at Anna? " I heed a low-pitched voice this time, quite deep, and manly. It's Tucker!
His voice acts as solace to my on-growing anxiety and I de-stress a little.
" Tu..tucker something bad ha..happened. I need you here...with me. " I sob, not able to complete my sentence, breaking down in the middle.
" Are...are you alright? Ellie where are you? " He asks frantically, getting apprehensive.
" At home..." I reply and cut the call. I sit down at the edge of the bad, looking here and there.
Are mom and dad alive? Did he kill them?
I am left alone, yet still accompanied by my thoughts. Reflecting upon where life went so disastrous.
My trail of thoughts is broken by a sharp pinching noise. A knock resonates through the hollow wood and my heart starts hammering.
What if he is back?
" Open the door, Ellie. It's me. Tucker." a gentle voice bellows.
I skip down the stairs and open the door promptly. I open the door to see Tucker and Anna.
In a state of unconditional vexation. I end up hugging them both for dear life. These are, after all the only two people I know and the only two people that came to comfort me.
I let them in and then explain everything. They listen to me studiously. After listening to the entire tale of tragedy, Tucker decides to speak.
" Do you know who they were? " He asks concerned. Looking at me with keen eyes.
" I... don't know Tuck. They were a lot but they had a boss who was quite distinct. They were listening to his orders. " I state, as much as I could decipher from the grim event.
" He...He was forcing my dad to say something on the phone call. " I state further, trying to recollect my vivid memories.
" Do you remember anything more? " Tucker asks desperately.
" We need more information to identify that man and get him behind the bars. Come on Ellie. Try to remember. " Tucker encourages. Wanting to get my rapist punished. He is a true friend!
" Mafia! They were from the mafia. Tuck, they said that the Mafia spares no one. They were getting revenge for something my dad did. " I exclaim! Excited over the newfound knowledge.
" Ma..mafia? " Tucker asks a little scared. Anna's eyes also go wide as saucers.
I nod in confirmation. Not able to understand the immense fear that reflects in their eyes.
"There is no Mafia in Oizys except one. They control all sorts of gangs. Each goon or gangster is under them. No crime can take place without their permission. In short, what happened to you was approved by them. Once they approve something, it no longer remains illegal. They are the law, Ellie. You cannot go against them. Forget what happened to you and be happy your still alive. I know this town and what goes on here." Anna remarks coldly.
" How could you say that as a woman? I'm not afraid of them. I'll go to the police. I'll file a case. Just because everyone fears them doesn't mean I have to. " I state boldly, offended by her statement. How can I just forget what happened to me?
" She is only saying this for your benefit. Your father went against them, Ellie. This was plotted by them. Don't dig your grave any further. " Tucker states with the same tone. All sympathy is lost for me. His expressions become neutral.
" Who are they? " I ask in a dreadful voice. I want to know the names of the men that ruined my life.
" They are the Stanley twins. Elijah Stanley and Stephen Stanley. " Tucker and Anna announce together. I notice immense fear, even when taking their mere names.
" Are they Gods, Tucker? " I ask, looking straight in his eyes. Demanding an answer.
He shakes his head in negative.
" Very well then, because I only fear God. I'm going to the police. " I state.
Both of them just shake their head at my insanity, but to me this is mettle.
"You're hopeless. We can't help you. Sometimes bravery is naivety, Ellie. You cannot destroy pure evil. Don't be naive because it will cost you your life. " Anna warns and with that said both of them leave.
I thought at least Tucker would help me out, but no! He backed off. I was always there for him, and this is how I am getting repaid.
The best thing about the worst time of your life is that you get to see the true colors of people that once mattered...
I grab my things and leave the house. I reach the police station soon. There I see the sheriff that used to visit our house when we first shifted.
" Sheriff Sandy! " I call out.
He looks at me, astonished.
" Ellie dear I heard the news of your parent's death. He was a great officer, sadly the robbers took an incredible officer from us. Do not worry child, we raised a ten-million-dollar fund for you. It will be used to fill your necessities." Sheriff Sandy states expecting me to be happy at the news of an enormous amount of money.
I just look at him depressed.
" They were never robbers, to begin with. It was planned murder. I know who they were! It's all done by those Stanley twins. My parents were killed! " I scream in frustration.
" Did you get hit on the head or something? I investigated it myself. It was a robbery gone wrong. Nothing more. " The sheriff says, trying to nullify my case.
I scoff at that.
" How much money did they give you? " I ask straight up.
And the sheriff's eyes go wide.
" How dare you accuse an officer on duty! " The sheriff bellows. His voice losing the gentle touch. His face consorts to a rough expression.
" Just like you dared to sell yourself for a few dollars you swine " I reply with the same attitude. Furious at the unlawful dealings going on in this place. My parents were brutally murdered, I was raped and I can't even punish my wrongdoers. Instead, everyone is trying to protect them.
Rather than guilt in his eyes, I am met with a tight slap on my face. My face tilts due to the shock. The sheriff just slapped me!
" Someone get her locked up. Her mind will be set once she goes behind the bars. " The sheriff shouts his face as red as a tomato. Steam blowing off his ears.
I am roughly shoved in the jail room. I wail for a few minutes. I call out to them, to let me go. But my pleads fall to deaf ears.
After 10 minutes, I tire down. I sit in the corner and start weeping. My anger now fades away and is overtaken by immense pain. Pain from this state of helplessness.
Time goes by in the jail when I hear the screeching noise of car breaks. Loud footsteps can be heard. The thud only increases with time. The sudden noise giving me anxiety.
My eyes fall on the pair of jet-black leather shoes.
My gaze travels up, only to be met with my doom!
