I did not plan the bookstore.
That was the thing I kept coming back to afterward — the fact that it was genuinely accidental, unengineered, a collision of two people's Saturday afternoons with no architecture behind it. I had not manufactured it. I had not known he would be there. If I had, I might have chosen a different bookstore entirely, which was its own kind of information about where my resolve stood on a given Saturday in late October.
The bookstore was on Court Street in Cobble Hill — small, independent, the kind of place that smelled like paper and wood polish and took its fiction section seriously. I had been going there since college. I went when I needed to think, which meant I went fairly often, and I went alone, which meant I knew the layout well enough to navigate it without looking up from whatever I was already reading.
I was in the back corner, in the literary fiction section, halfway through the first chapter of something a review had recommended, when I heard his voice.
Not directed at me. He was near the front of the store, talking to the owner — a woman named Carol who had been there since before I was a regular and who knew her inventory the way I knew my recipes, thoroughly and with strong opinions. He was asking about something specific, a title, and Carol was telling him they had one copy left and she'd held it because she'd had a feeling someone would come in for it.
I stood very still between the shelves.
The sensible thing was to stay where I was until he'd finished and left. The bookstore was small but navigable — if I stayed in the back I could reasonably avoid the entire situation and go home and continue being a person of reasonable judgment.
I stayed in the back for approximately ninety seconds.
Then I went to find the coffee table section, which required passing the front of the store.
He saw me before I saw him, which I suspected was always going to be the case.
"Ava." He was standing at the front counter with a book in his hand, Carol already moving away to help another customer, and his expression when he looked up held the particular quality of someone who had just been handed something unexpected and was deciding how to hold it. "What are you doing in Cobble Hill?"
"I live in Cobble Hill."
Something shifted in his expression — a recalibration, slight. "I didn't know that."
"Brooklyn's a big borough." I nodded at the book in his hand. "What did you find?"
He turned it over. A novel I had read two years ago — dense, beautifully written, the kind of book that required patience and rewarded it extravagantly. "Carol recommended it. I described what I was looking for and she disappeared for thirty seconds and came back with this."
"Carol is the best bookseller in the city. Whatever she hands you, read it."
"You've read it?"
"Twice." I paused. "Don't read the last page first."
The corner of his mouth lifted. "I don't do that."
"Jade told me you do that."
"Jade has a complicated relationship with the truth."
I laughed — genuinely, the kind that came before I had time to manage it — and he smiled at the sound of it, briefly and unguardedly, and for a moment the bookstore was very small and very warm and outside it was the kind of overcast October Saturday that made indoor spaces feel like the right answer to every question.
"Are you staying to browse?" he asked.
"I was going to."
A brief pause. "I'll stay too. If that's all right."
It was an offer made simply, without pressure, leaving the exit clearly visible. This was, I had long understood, one of the things about Marcus that made him so difficult — he never cornered. He always left the door open and let you walk through or not on your own terms, and somehow this made walking through feel more like a choice and less like a surrender.
"It's all right," I said.
We spent an hour in the bookstore.
Not together, exactly — we moved through the space independently, intersecting at intervals, the way two people did when they were each genuinely there for the books and also genuinely aware of where the other person was at all times. He spent a long time in the history section. I found two things in fiction and one in the small poetry section near the window that I hadn't expected to want.
We met in the middle, near the new releases, and compared finds. He had added two more books to Carol's original recommendation — one history, one biography. I showed him my three. He picked up the poetry collection and read the back, his expression doing the focused thing it did when he was actually reading rather than skimming.
"This one's good," I said.
"Have you read it?"
"I read the review. The poet is from the Bronx — she writes about the city the way it actually feels, not the way people who visit write about it."
He opened to a random page. Read something silently. His expression shifted in a way I recognised — genuine response, unperformed.
"Buy it," I said.
He did.
We ended up at the coffee shop two doors down because it was raining by the time we left and the overhang only covered so much and the decision happened without either of us exactly making it — we simply moved in the same direction and the coffee shop was there.
It was narrow and warm, bar seating along the window, a handful of small tables in the back. We got coffee and took the window seats because the rain on the glass was the kind of worth watching.
We talked for two hours.
I could not, afterward, have reconstructed the exact architecture of the conversation. It moved the way good conversations moved — not linearly, not with an agenda, but following the shape of genuine mutual interest. We talked about the book I'd read twice, what was worth the patience. We talked about the Bronx poet and the city and what it meant to write about a place you'd grown up inside. He told me something about his father that I hadn't known — a detail about Gerald's early life, before the Upper East Side, before the money, a younger version of the man I had known as already settled — and I understood, receiving it, that it was the kind of detail shared carefully, not casually.
I told him about the year I'd almost quit, before the bakery, when I'd been working in someone else's kitchen and hating it and unable to see clearly enough through the exhaustion to understand what I actually wanted. He listened the way he always listened — fully, without filling the space.
At some point the rain eased and neither of us moved.
"You're different," he said, at a pause. Not accusatory. Observational, the way he observed most things.
"Different from what?"
"From how you were." He considered it. "Not — you're the same person. But something is different. Since I got back." He looked at me directly. "You seem more — present."
I held his gaze. "I've been trying something new."
"What's that?"
"Stopping managing," I said. "Myself. Around certain people."
He was quiet for a moment. Outside the rain had fully stopped and the street was wet and bright under the streetlamps, the city doing its particular trick of looking clean after rain.
"How's that working out?" he asked, quietly.
I looked at him — the steady gray eyes, the quality of attention, the man I had been carrying around in the back of myself for four years like a book I kept meaning to put down and kept finding in my hands.
"Ask me later," I said.
He looked at me for a long moment. Then he looked at his coffee cup.
He didn't say anything else about it.
But he didn't look away for a long time, either.
