The Birthday

May 23 12:00 am. Today is finally my 18th birthday. My mother always told me that today would be special of all the days. She always said that everything would be more magical. I've stayed up all day excited for today, but now I'm just drained. THAT MORNING AT 9:30 AM.... "Wake up honey, today is a very magical day" my mother says. I rub my eyes as I roll out of my bed. That is when I smell heaven. I ran to the kitchen and I saw my favorite pancakes with some eggs and a nice glass of orange juice on the side. "Thank you momma it all smells so delicious" I said as I licked my lips. My mother walks to make herself a plate as I go sit down and dig in. I grab the morning newspaper as I eat. I scanned through the newspaper and that's when everything changed. My plate and drink were gone in an instant, as well as my mother. Not only did she leave, but life itself left, everything just looked so lifeless. I scan my surroundings and see different shades of gray with hints of white. Everything is gone, there's nothing and no one here. I hear my mother's voice but she is nowhere to be seen. Her voice was so faint, "Follow my voice hun, I'll guide you back. Don't be scared, you have to stay calm", My mother tells me calmly. As I walk to follow her voice, something stops me in my tracks. "Please don't leave me here alone. I'm scared", an unknown voice calls out. "Who's there" I say as my voice shakes. My heart starts to beat faster. I can hear it. "I wont hurt you. I promise I just need a friend" the unknown voice said. "A-a-a friend?" I stuttered. "Yes please don't go, I beg of you" said the unknown voice. "I apologize but I really have to go. I need to return home to my mom" I said. I tried to walk fast as I followed the sound of my mother's voice when I heard the unknown voice again. "Please come back soon then" said the unknown voice. I felt so bad for not wanting to stay, but at the same time I didn't know where I was. "I will", I told the unknown voice. I tried to stay calm like my mother told me as I followed her voice and at last I returned home, back at the table in front of my plate and my mother in the exact same spot, she was just looking at me with a smile on her face. "Hey hun how was your trip?" She asked. I knit my eyebrows together confused "My trip?" I asked her curiously. She stands up straight and stares me straight in the eyes with the same smile on her face and says "Yes honey, your trip to the past. How was it? I knew it was your first time so I decided to help you get out" she said. I looked at her shockingly. "H-h-how d-did you k-know what happened?" I stuttered. "Well the same thing happened to me when I first turned 18 as well, honey, it's normal for our family. Each generation of us ladies gets the gift of seeing the past while we're still in the present," she said. "Maybe one day you'll see when I first learned about our gift. I told you today would be magical."
