Whispers of Suspicion

The second the lecture hall door creaked open, Kane pulled his hand away from under Emma’s skirt and stepped back sharply. In one smooth motion, he moved toward the center of the room, putting safe distance between them. Emma’s heart hammered as she quickly smoothed down her skirt, legs still trembling from the intense orgasm he had just forced from her. She stayed hidden in the shadowed corner behind the podium, trying to steady her breathing. “Professor Kane?” Jessica Harlan’s voice echoed through the mostly empty hall, confident and slightly too sweet. “Do you have a minute? I had a question about the assignment.” Kane straightened his tie and turned toward her with perfect composure, the picture of a professional professor. “Of course, Miss Harlan. What can I help you with?” Emma remained frozen in place, pulse racing. She could still feel the ghost of Kane’s fingers between her legs, the lingering wetness on her thighs, and the aftershocks of pleasure making her knees weak. She prayed Jessica wouldn’t come any closer. Jessica stopped a few feet away from the podium, her sharp blue eyes scanning the room with obvious curiosity. “I’ve noticed you’ve been giving certain students… special attention lately. Front row seats, extra discussions after class. Some of us are starting to wonder if there’s a particular reason behind it.” The accusation hung heavy in the air. Kane’s expression remained calm, almost amused. “My criteria are based on effort and quality of work, Miss Harlan. If you feel your performance deserves more attention, I suggest you focus on improving your contributions in class.” Jessica’s gaze flicked toward the corner where Emma was hiding. For a terrifying second, Emma thought she might walk over. Instead, Jessica smiled thinly. “Of course, Professor. I just want to make sure everything is… fair.” She paused, then added, “Emma Sinclair seems to be getting quite a lot of your time these days.” Emma’s stomach dropped. Kane’s voice stayed level. “Miss Sinclair has shown strong potential. I treat all my students according to their needs. Was there anything else?” Jessica lingered for a moment longer, clearly unsatisfied, before nodding. “No, that’s all. Thank you.” As soon as she turned and walked out of the lecture hall, Kane moved quickly back to Emma. He pulled her into his arms, one hand cupping her face. “You okay?” he asked, voice lower now, gentler. Emma nodded, still shaken. “She suspects something. She basically accused me of sleeping with you for grades.” Kane’s jaw tightened. He brushed his thumb across her cheek, eyes darkening with a mix of protectiveness and desire. “Let her suspect. As long as she has no proof, she can talk all she wants.” He leaned in and kissed her ; slow, deep, and full of unspoken emotion. The weekend they had spent together had changed everything. What started as blackmail now felt dangerously close to real feelings. When he pulled back, he rested his forehead against hers. “This is becoming more than I expected, Emma,” he admitted quietly. “I’m falling for you. Harder than I should.” Emma’s breath caught. The confession sent warmth blooming through her chest, even as fear coiled in her belly. Before she could respond, her phone vibrated in her bag. She pulled it out with shaky hands. Another anonymous text. I know what you’re doing. Keep spreading your legs for him and the whole campus will know how you really earned your A. Attached was a blurry photo; Kane standing too close to her in the empty lecture hall the day before, his hand nearly touching her waist. Emma showed Kane the screen, her voice barely a whisper. “She’s not going to stop.” Kane stared at the message, his expression hardening with protective anger. But beneath it, she saw the same conflict she felt, the thrill of their growing connection battling against the very real threat closing in around them. He pulled her tighter against his chest. “We’ll deal with this together,” he said fiercely. “Tonight. My place. No more hiding how I feel about you.” As Kane kissed her again, deeper this time, Emma realized with frightening clarity: She was no longer just afraid of being caught. She was terrified of how much she was starting to love the man who could ruin her.
