I’m so excited! Tomorrow my friends and I are going to check out the street markets downtown and probably get some new stuff for the cottage. A little countryside cottage should get the best, prettiest decor possible. Note that I am calling them my “friends” right now (and will, too, tomorrow) and not my “performers”, “orchestral members” or “fellow musicians”. That’s because when we’re off-duty (my code word for “NOT rehearsing”. We are yet to earn a gig to go duty-ing on in MONTHS) I treat them as my friends and nothing else.
We started off as good, quiet (well, MOST of us are rather quiet), friendly students from the German Institute of Classical Music (GICM). A whole class of us - each with his or her own unique talent on individual instruments. We all managed to graduate with stellar examination results and are now officially adult musicians. During the graduation party, I announced that I am planning to assemble my own small-time orchestra (got to start small!) and asked who would like to join. Out of 30 students in my class, only 10 raised their hands, including my best friend of YEARS, Robbert Emmerich Golde.
So I, and the 10 of these friends, which makes 11 of us, now live together in a simple but beautiful, rent-free (lucky for us!) cottage in the quiet and peaceful outskirts of the country. Here is where we dwell and practice our singing, composing and playing. Here is also where we kept our bond strong and create funny, wonderful memories together. Our parents don’t seem to mind in general that we live together, long as we stay together and don’t go our separate ways too soon yet! Haha. But of course we’ll stay together, right? We have to, if we are going to make it big in the country someday.
I better go to bed now. Today has been an off-duty day. Naturally, my friends all take advantage of it and have as much fun as we could before crashing into bed at night. I can say we’re all still children like this, but in a good way. I guess this “childishness”, as what other adult are so fond of calling it, is the very thing that’s keeping us together as a startup musical team. Our refreshing innovation of incorporating New Wave elements of music into Baroque, Classical and Opera will do the rest for us. Hopefully. Seeing the shift in people’s preferences in so many kinds of music these days, at least a small percentage (I don’t know how much exactly) of our potential audiences should appreciate our efforts of trying to bridge the game between the old and new, the young and old, and the traditional and modern. Not many people have heard of us as of now, but eventually, with enough patience, passion, ability and optimism (many people say that’s my best trait), the world will come to know of the GICM Orchestra, most known (or should I say, most popular) for their fresh breath of air into centuries-old genres of music.
Tomorrow’s going to be another fun day. I can feel it. Good night!
Notes for Today:
Georgia is improving on her flute-playing, but still needs to strengthen and lengthen her airflow and get her chords right.
Robbert, on the other hand, is still the tip-top organ-player that he is…… who cannot do the trust fall correctly. How do you expect someone you trust to catch you if you fall flat on your face instead? Heehee. He sure is my favourite friend. A little awkward and shy…… but cute, I guess, like a little brother.
