The Breaking Point

The city was still trembling from the chaos on VossTech’s rooftop as the night bled into morning. Ivy hardly slept, replaying the gunshot over and over. By sunrise, the office was a fortress, security badges checked twice, new faces behind the reception desk, and whispered rumors swirling in the marble corridors. Ivy wore yesterday’s clothes and dark circles under her eyes. She’d never felt more exposed. Alexei called an emergency meeting before anyone could settle at their desks. Ivy arrived to find him standing at the head of the boardroom table, hands braced on polished wood, jaw set in a grim line. Elena and Marcus were already there, along with a handful of senior executives. Their faces were tight with suspicion. “Someone tried to kill us last night,” Alexei announced, voice cold and clear. “This is no longer just a matter of corporate espionage. It’s attempted murder.” A stunned silence. Elena smirked, but her fingers twisted the ring on her hand, a tell that Ivy had noticed before. Marcus’s gaze flickered, nervous and evasive. Alexei continued, “Until we find out who’s behind this, all internal communications are monitored. No one leaves the building without my permission. Ivy, you’ll work from my office for your own safety.” Ivy’s skin prickled. Suddenly she was at the center of a storm she only half-understood. After the meeting, as the others filed out, Alexei pulled Ivy aside. His voice dropped to a whisper, the hard edges gone. “Are you all right?” She hesitated, then nodded. “I’m fine. Just… shaken.” He reached out, almost touching her arm, but stopped himself. “I promise I’ll keep you safe. But you need to tell me everything you know. Every threat, every file, every conversation.” Ivy glanced at Elena and Marcus, now deep in hushed debate. “What about them?” Alexei’s eyes darkened. “If they’re behind this, I’ll handle it. But I need proof.” They retreated to his office, a glass sanctuary high above the storm. Ivy told him everything: the threatening texts, the secret files, the overheard conversation between Elena and Marcus, and the cyber evidence Lila’s contact had uncovered. Alexei listened in silence, tension growing in his posture. When she finished, he exhaled, rubbing his temples. “This is bigger than I thought. My father must have made enemies I never knew.” He sank into his chair, suddenly looking older. “I built this company trying to outrun his shadow. I thought I could fix everything with enough control, enough distance. But maybe all I did was make new monsters.” Ivy sat across from him, heart pounding. “You don’t have to do this alone.” He looked up, a rare vulnerability in his eyes. “I don’t know how not to.” A beat of silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken longing and fear. Then Alexei’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and swore under his breath. “It’s the police. They want statements. And the press is outside. This is about to go public, Ivy. Are you ready?” She steeled herself. “I have nothing left to lose.” He almost smiled. “Neither do I.” The next hours blurred into a frenzy, police interviews, lawyers pacing the halls, news cameras flashing outside the building. Ivy was grilled about every detail. Who threatened you? Did you see the shooter? Why were you on the roof? She told the truth, mostly. She left out Lila’s hacking, but gave the police Elena and Marcus’s names, along with the timestamps of the leaks she’d traced. She felt Elena’s cold gaze burning into her back the whole time. During a break, Lila called from a blocked number. “Ivy, bad news. The tabloid sites are running with your name. ‘VossTech’s Girl Friday at Center of Murder Plot.’ They’re dragging up your past scandal. You need to get ahead of this, fast.” Ivy’s stomach twisted. “How?” “Go on the record. Your words, your story. Don’t let them define you.” It sounded simple. But as Ivy looked out at the waiting reporters, her hands shook. She was tired of running. Alexei found her in the executive lounge, staring at the skyline. He held out a glass of water, his hand steady even if his eyes were not. “You’re not alone, Ivy,” he said quietly. “If you want, I’ll stand beside you at the press conference.” She met his gaze, seeing the man beneath the CEO, the one who’d lost his father, who’d tried to save his family in all the wrong ways, who’d trusted her with his secrets. She nodded. “Let’s do it together.” They walked to the conference room side by side, a wall of cameras and lights waiting for them. Alexei spoke first, his voice calm and commanding. “There was an attempt on our lives last night. We are fully cooperating with the police and have nothing to hide. VossTech has made mistakes in the past, but we’re committed to transparency. We will not be intimidated.” He gestured to Ivy. “Ms. Walker has been targeted because she tried to expose the truth. She has my full support.” Ivy took a trembling breath and stepped to the microphone. Her voice shook only slightly. “I joined VossTech for a second chance. I discovered things I couldn’t ignore. I will not be silenced by threats or violence. I believe in this company’s ability to change.” A hush fell as the press fired questions. “Who do you think is behind the attack?” “Are you and Mr. Voss involved romantically?” “Will you press charges?” Alexei stepped in, shielding her from the worst. “We can’t comment on an ongoing investigation. But anyone who threatens my team threatens me.” They left the stage to a flurry of flashes. Ivy felt both lighter and more terrified than ever. Back upstairs, Alexei called a private meeting with Elena and Marcus. Ivy was invited, but she hesitated outside the door, listening. Elena’s voice was sharp. “This is your fault, Alexei. Dragging outsiders into family business.” Marcus’s reply was low and urgent. “We can’t keep covering for you. If the police find the offshore accounts” Alexei cut through the noise. “I’m done with secrets. From now on, everything comes to light.” Ivy pushed the door open, heart hammering. “Then start with the truth. Elena, you’ve been leaking information. Marcus, you’ve helped her cover it up. Why?” Elena’s eyes blazed, but it was Marcus who broke. “Your father ruined my family. He promised me a future here, a seat at the table. When he died, you froze me out. Elena offered me a way back in.” Elena’s lip curled. “I’m owed half this company. I’m not going to watch you destroy it with your guilt and your pet project.” Alexei stared at them both, agony written across his face. “You betrayed me. You betrayed all of us.” A tense silence. Then Ivy spoke, gentle but firm. “It’s not just about legacy or revenge. It’s about what kind of future you want to build. You can’t rewrite the past, but you can choose something better now.” Elena’s expression flickered, but she turned away, jaw set. Marcus looked defeated, hands trembling. Alexei nodded, voice hoarse. “It ends now. I’ll confess everything to the board. If VossTech survives, we start over. If not, at least we did the right thing.” As dusk settled, Ivy and Alexei met on the rooftop once more, the city stretching out endless and uncertain before them. The storm had finally broken; the air was sharp with the promise of change. Alexei spoke first, his voice ragged. “I’ve spent my whole life trying to control everything, people, outcomes, even myself. But I can’t control you, Ivy. I don’t want to.” She stepped closer, feeling the old walls between them dissolve. “I don’t want perfect. I want real.” He cupped her face, thumb tracing the line of her jaw. “I’m terrified of losing everything. But I’m more terrified of never trying.” She smiled, tears pricking her eyes. “Maybe we can build something honest from the ruins.” He kissed her, slow and certain, sealing the promise between them. But as they held each other, neither noticed the figure watching from the far end of the roof—camera phone in hand, smile cold and satisfied. Later that night, a new headline would break: “VossTech Scandal: Secret Lovers, Family Betrayal, and the Billion-Dollar Cover-Up.” The world was about to know everything. And Ivy realized, with a strange sense of calm, that this was the moment she’d been running toward all her life.
