When the water hit his skin, he felt the cold tear into that searing heat that had enveloped his body—and he knew what had just happened. What was happening. Kai had witnessed it once. A shifter with a name he couldn’t remember, chained to a tree, panting, and miserable. Just a boy then, Kai could recall the tortured look in the mans’ eyes, the hunger as he gazed longingly toward a woman not far away, curled up in a cage, her skin flushed red, sweating as she stared back at him, almost tauntingly. Heat. Rut. Surfacing with a gasp, he swam forward, against the stream. With each angry stroke, he felt the biting cold turn to a more natural temperature.
