“Let's talk about the relevant topic,” I say, trying to force myself to shake the bad feelings and smile, “Did you like the kiss?"
"Yes, it was really good," she says, "But I had no idea what I was doing. And when you kissed my neck... I came close to dying."
"Do you want to try that again?"
"No, that's enough for today."
I have nothing left to do but accept, so I just shrug and pull out my phone as I sit down next to her. I have a bunch of texts from Gemma.
"Hey, Mid do you want to go to a club?"
"Sure, when?"
"Right now. It's Gemma's birthday and I totally forgot," I mumble, texting Gemma that I planned to go to her house anyway to give her her present, "Go get ready while I go in search of a present."
"What should I wear?" she asks, jumping out of bed, playing with her hair again and looking excited, "I'll go ask Angie."
She leaves without giving me a chance to answer and I have to get my car to go buy something. The only thing I find open nearby is a jewelry store.
"Could you give me the cheapest thing you have?" I quickly ask the woman while I ask Mid by text if she is almost ready. The woman asks me if I prefer earrings, bracelet, ring or necklace, "I said the cheapest. I don't care what it is."
She pretends not to be upset and pulls out a small bracelet that appears to be gold. It's only 30 pounds so I buy it, truth be told I wasn't willing to spend more than that on Gemma. I love her and all, I guess, but my money is dedicated to one thing only and I'm not going to waste it on gifts.
Fortunately, Mid is completely ready and comes out to greet me the moment I set foot in the hallway of our apartments. She’s wearing a white dress so small it looks like part of her skin. It covers all the essentials but gives us a chance to see perfectly what is hidden behind the fabric. She's also put on high heels that put her at eye level with me.
"I guess it goes without saying not to leave Mid alone, right?" asks Angie crossing her arms across her chest. Mid gives her a frustrated look, but my sister-in-law doesn't care, "It's not because I think you're dumb, it's because Gray has a habit of forgetting the people he's with at a party and leaving them there."
"It was only once, Angelica, I think it's time you get over it. I won't do the same with Mid," I assure, reaching over to take her hand and pull her to me before Angie regrets letting her come with me, "Besides, I want to show her off and have her by my side all the time, Do you think I'd forget about her when she looks like this?"
"Do you like it?" asks Midnight with a big smile and she lets go of my hand to spin around on herself, letting me see her whole body. I can't even answer, my tongue is salivating too much. I just nod my head, "You heard him, Angie. Thank you so much for helping me, I think it's time to go."
Gemma's celebration is at a club called Delavy's and it's on the other side of the clan, but my beloved car keeps running until we get there. I don't know if it’ll start when we want to go back home, but I’ll worry about that when the time comes.
From the moment we get in, I can see Gemma. Her VIP booth is the main one and it's full of familiar people. Of course and as expected, Midnight gets a lot of attention and I have to hug her around the waist to keep anyone from approaching, even though maybe that's what she wants.
I give my name to the booth guard and they let us through. Immediately, I see Gemma, she's up on a couch opening a bottle and squealing with excitement, her eyes find mine and I realize at this moment what's going to happen here.
"Listen, Angel. I'm not going to forget about you, I promise," I begin, walking until I find a place alone where Mid can sit, "I'll be with you as much as I can, but I might disappear for a few minutes. You have nothing to worry about, I'll be in the bathroom having sëx with Gemma and I'll be back for you the second I'm done."
"Oh," she wrinkles her nose the same way Lion does, "And what am I going to do? Introduce me to some of your friends, I don't want to be alone."
“I don’t have any friends here. I just have two and they’re both lame and asleep by now. I promise to take as little time as possible... you know the protocol of being in a club, right? Don't accept drinks, don't go alone with anyone, blablaba, do your best not to get raped."
"Of course I know, I'm not stupid."
I nod, feeling more confident now that I've warned her that and kiss her forehead before going in search of Gemma to give her her the two gifts I have for her tonight.
{ Midnight }
I'm not sure I like being in a club. From the moment Gray breaks away from me and goes almost running to where Gemma is and scoops her up in his arms to take her to the bathroom, I'm left completely alone and trying to fight the jealousy and envy once again.
The people her don't talk to me, and to strangers I'm completely invisible. That leaves me with only one possible thing to do: people-watch.
I realize that these VIP booths around the dance floor are the most boring parts of the whole club. Hardly anyone is dancing, they're just getting drunk and taking pictures. In the normal part of the club everyone seems to be having more fun. And I've never danced, but it makes me want to. It doesn't look too hard, you just move your hips with the beat and swing your arms trying not to hit anyone.
"Hi, Night," Regina greets me the moment I get up from the couch to go dance. I stop myself from grunting and give her a small smile, "I hadn't seen you arrive, but I should have guessed when Gray showed up. You two haven't been splitting up at all since you arrived, have you?"
"Well, we haven’t, but only because..."
"Never mind, come with us," she puts her hand on my forearm and pulls me toward a group of people I know only by sight. They all stare at me as I approach, "You know Lion's daughter, right? Midnight. She's funny."
"Yeah, sure," Matthew replies. The only one who acknowledges my presence when I'm around. He gives me a hot look from head to toe and I get a little excited. Maybe he likes me, "Want a drink? We have all kinds of bottles."
"Uh... yeah, sure," I reply, and by this point everyone else has gone back to whatever they were doing before I arrived. Ignoring me, "Do you have anything sweet?"
"No, but I have tequila," he grins mischievously, looking even more handsome than before and I nod just because I want him to see me as a normal woman who can drink tequila and have friends. Matthew pours the amber liquid into a small glass and hands it to me along with a slice of lime, "Bottoms up."
I'm not excited about this, in fact, I'd rather do anything but this because I know I'm not going to like it. I didn't like beer and that's basically the most boring drink in the world. But like I said before, I want Matthew to think I'm normal, so I open my mouth and pour the entire contents of the glass in there.
Bad idea.
"Wow!" exclaims Regina next to me with her eyes bulging. For a second, I think it's not that bad, it doesn't taste like anything, but then I try to swallow and it feels like everything inside me is being burned, "Oh my god, are you okay?"
"No!" I scream, pain in my throat, after I've calmed down. I realize that in my pain, I spit a little and stained my dress. Also my stomach starts to burn, "I hate it. I hate it, it's like taking poison."
Matthew throws his head back and lets out a laugh, but I don't find it funny. I don't think my kidneys are ever going to heal from this liquid. Still, I think it was worth it because Matthew comes over to me and puts a hand on my shoulder like he's going to hug me.
"That was cute. Isn't she cute, Matty?" asks Regina with a condescending tone and intrudes between us to steal my damn hug and then, as if she didn't just break my heart by touching Matthew, she reaches up a little and kisses him on the mouth in front of me.
Stupid Regina with her long blonde hair and beautiful body, I wish one day I could wake up and have all her beauty to myself.
I turn around and return to my seat, completely dejected. I should never have stood up. Now my heart is broken, my throat is on fire, my kidneys are destroyed and I feel inadequate and foolish. So I make myself small on the couch and keep watching.
