The pain didn’t leave. It lingered between them like something alive.
Katelyn stayed frozen in Daniel’s arms for only a second before pulling away sharply, her chest rising unevenly.
The bond still throbbed beneath her ribs, hot and unstable, like a wound reopening every time he got too close.
Daniel stared at her as if he’d just watched something precious crack beyond repair.
“Katelyn—”
“Don’t.” Her voice came out softer than she intended, trembling at the edges.
The rejection hit him instantly. She felt it through the bond.
A sharp pull. A quiet devastation.
Daniel stepped back slowly, forcing space between them despite every instinct screaming against it. His fists clenched at his sides hard enough for veins to stand out beneath his skin.
