Hell Hound Frenzy

Dinner passed by uneventfully, the clinking of silverware against china filling the air as conversations ebbed and flowed around the table. Lost in my thoughts, I scarcely paid attention to what I was eating, my mind preoccupied with the unwelcome presence of James and the looming PR scandal. A few half-hearted bites later, I pushed my plate away, the food barely touched. With a murmured excuse, I rose from the table and made my way to my room, the weight of the evening heavy on my shoulders. As I sat on my bed, silently brooding over the events of the evening, there came a gentle knock on the door before it creaked open, revealing the familiar figure of my brother, Max. Despite my frustration, a silent laugh escaped me at his gentlemanly behavior as he entered and took a seat beside me. "Hey, kiddo," Max greeted me, his voice gentle yet reassuring. "Mind if I join you?" With a nod, I scooted over to make room for him on the bed, appreciating his presence in that moment of turmoil. Max took a moment to study my expression before speaking again. "I know tonight hasn't been easy for you," he began, his tone empathetic. "But I need you to understand that Dad's just trying to keep you safe." I sighed, feeling a mixture of annoyance and resignation. "I know, Max," I replied, my voice tinged with frustration. "But did he have to bring in James? Couldn't he have found someone less... imposing?" Max chuckled softly, understanding the sentiment behind my words. "I get it, believe me," he said, his tone sympathetic. "But I've done some digging, and James seems to know what he's doing. And Dad's been stressed about your safety lately, especially with all the recent drama." I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt at the mention of Dad's worries. Despite our differences, he only wanted what was best for me. Max reached out, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Just give it some time, okay?" he urged, his eyes earnest. "I'll talk to Dad, see if we can find a better solution. But for now, I need you to tolerate James's presence. Can you do that for me?" I met Max's gaze, seeing the sincerity in his eyes, and nodded slowly. "Yeah, I can do that," I replied, a sense of determination settling within me. "Thanks, Max. I appreciate it." With a nod of understanding, Max offered me a small smile before rising from the bed. "Anytime, Sage," he said, his voice filled with warmth. As Max left the room, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reassurance wash over me. With Max's words echoing in my mind, I finally allowed myself to relax. The weight of the evening's events seemed to lift ever so slightly as I settled back onto my bed, the soft embrace of my blankets offering a comforting refuge. Closing my eyes, I let out a long exhale, releasing the tension that had been coiled within me. With a contented sigh, I let sleep claim me, allowing the darkness to envelop me in its soothing embrace. James Restless in the unfamiliar surroundings, I tossed and turned in my bed, unable to find solace in sleep. Cursing myself for accepting the job, I berated my own naivety. It had seemed like the ideal assignment at first—escort a girl back and forth to her classes, accompany her wherever she goes, and keep an eye out on the surroundings. The usual bodyguard s**t, I thought. But never in a million years had I predicted the outcomes it yielded right now. I had never felt comfortable letting my guard down in public, especially around strangers. Now, I found myself living in a household filled with them. Anger surged within me as I took a deep drag of my cigarette, the bitter taste failing to soothe my frayed nerves. All because of that little girl. Her insults echoed in my mind, each one a sharp reminder of my place in her world. How she hurled them at me as if it were her birthright, as if I were nothing more than a nuisance to be tolerated. The memory ignited a fire within me, a simmering rage that threatened to consume me whole. But as the smoke curled around me, I forced myself to push aside the anger, to focus on the task at hand. I may have accepted the job begrudgingly, but I was determined to see it through to the end, no matter the insults hurled my way, I would protect her with everything I had. Even if it meant sacrificing my own peace of mind in the process. Anger still coursing through my veins, I stubbed out the cigarette and made my way back towards the mansion from the garden. But as I approached, the loud barking sounds near the main gate caught my attention. Curiosity piqued, I hastened my steps and soon found myself face to face with the source of the commotion. There, cowering in fear before my mastiff bull, was the little entitled princess herself. A smirk tugged at the corners of my lips as I watched her, the image of her haughty demeanor crumbling in the face of a creature far larger and more imposing than she could ever hope to be. For a moment, our eyes met, and I could see the fear reflected in hers, like a flickering flame in the darkness. It was a small victory, perhaps, but a satisfying one nonetheless. With a calculated gleam in my eyes, I stepped forward, the tension in the air thick with unspoken threats and hidden intentions. As I approached, the mastiff bull obediently backed off, its menacing growls fading into a low rumble of discontent. The princess watched me warily, her facade of entitlement crumbling before my gaze. With a voice as cold as steel, I spoke, my words carrying a warning wrapped in silk. "You should be more careful, princess," I said, each syllable laced with a subtle menace. "You never know what dangers lurk in the shadows." With a firm tug on the mastiff's leash, I guided the imposing creature away from the princess, the tension in the air dissipating with each step. As the distance between them grew, so too did the sense of relief that washed over me. After all, even entitled princesses needed someone to protect them from the darkness. And if they were wise, they would heed the warnings of those who walked the shadows with ease.
