The next morning, Savannah arrived at work earlier than usual.
She was beginning to settle into the rhythm of the office. The constant movement, the ringing phones, the conversations happening around her—it was different from Sunnyvale, but she liked it.
She was halfway through answering an email when someone approached her desk.
"Miss Lewis?"
Savannah looked up.
"Yes?"
The receptionist held out a bouquet of flowers.
"These were delivered for you."
Savannah blinked.
"For me?"
The woman nodded.
"There was no card."
Savannah stared at the flowers.
She already had an idea who they were from.
Brian.
Who else?
She thanked the receptionist and carefully placed the bouquet on the corner of her desk.
She didn't open her phone.
She didn't need to.
A few minutes later, she was back to work.
Or at least, she tried to be.
The flowers kept catching her attention.
She finally glanced at them again.
They were beautiful.
Far too beautiful for something she should probably ignore.
"You're being ridiculous," she whispered to herself.
She turned back toward her computer.
A few minutes later, footsteps approached.
Savannah looked up.
Damien.
He was speaking quietly with Felicia as they walked across the office. He stopped beside Savannah's desk while Felicia checked something on her tablet.
His eyes moved briefly toward the flowers.
Then to Savannah.
Then back to the flowers.
Something changed in his expression.
It was subtle.
So subtle that Savannah wasn't even sure she'd seen it.
"Everything going well?" he asked.
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Good."
His gaze returned to the bouquet.
"Flowers?"
Savannah swallowed.
"Apparently."
"Apparently?"
"I didn't order them."
Damien's expression remained unreadable.
"I see."
Felicia glanced between them.
"We'll discuss the campaign upstairs."
Damien nodded.
"Right."
He walked away with her.
Savannah watched him disappear toward the elevators.
Then she looked at the flowers again.
For some reason, she suddenly felt uncomfortable leaving them sitting there.
She reached for the bouquet and moved it beneath her desk.
Then she stopped.
Why was she hiding them?
She frowned at herself.
Damien was her boss.
That was all.
And yet...
She couldn't deny that she wanted him to like her.
Not romantically.
At least, that's what she told herself.
She wanted to impress him.
She wanted him to think she was good at her job.
She wanted his approval.
But why?
Savannah sighed.
"Get a grip."
She turned back to her computer.
A few hours later, Felicia appeared beside her desk.
"Coffee?"
Savannah looked up.
"Please."
They walked downstairs to the café in the building.
"So," Felicia said, stirring her coffee, "Damien wants the campaign concept revised."
Savannah smiled.
"Of course he does."
Felicia laughed.
"He likes things done properly."
"I noticed."
"Don't take it personally."
"I don't."
Felicia gave her a knowing look.
"You absolutely do."
Savannah laughed.
"Maybe a little."
They continued talking about the campaign, and for the first time that morning, Savannah stopped thinking about the flowers.
Until they returned upstairs.
Because standing near the entrance was someone she hadn't expected to see.
Ethan.
Savannah stopped walking.
Her smile disappeared.
Felicia noticed immediately.
"Who is that?"
Savannah didn't answer.
Ethan's eyes found hers.
And the expression on his face made Savannah's stomach drop.
He had come looking for her.
