A Celebration to Remember

820 Words
The drive to the restaurant was quieter than Savannah expected. Not uncomfortable. Just peaceful. For the first time in what felt like weeks, she wasn't thinking about assignments, deadlines, job applications, or the uncertainty waiting for her after graduation. She was simply enjoying the moment. She glanced out the window as Sunnyvale passed by, the familiar streets slowly changing into quieter roads lined with trees and expensive homes. "Ethan..." He glanced over. "Yeah?" "Where exactly are we going?" He smiled. "You'll see." Savannah narrowed her green eyes at him. "That sounds suspicious." He laughed. "Since when do you not trust me?" She smiled despite herself. "Since you started being mysterious." "Funny," he said. "I thought that was Brian's job." The mention of Brian caught her off guard. Only for a second. But Ethan noticed. Savannah looked back out the window. "Sorry." "It's okay." But the smile on Ethan's face faded slightly before he looked back at the road. A few minutes later, they arrived at the restaurant. Savannah stared at the building. It was beautiful. Elegant. The kind of place she would normally walk past and assume wasn't meant for someone like her. "Ethan..." "What?" "This place is expensive." He smiled. "You graduated." "That doesn't mean I suddenly became rich." He laughed. "Relax. I'm not asking you to buy the building." She shook her head, smiling. "You know, normal people celebrate graduation with pizza." "And you deserve better than pizza." Savannah looked at him for a moment. That was Ethan. Always thoughtful. Always trying to make people feel special. She couldn't deny he was handsome too. His caramel-brown hair fell slightly over his forehead, his blue eyes always seeming warmer when he smiled. He had the kind of face people trusted easily, and his relaxed confidence made him easy to be around. Compared to Brian's intense presence, Ethan felt safe. Familiar. Comfortable. They were seated near the large windows overlooking the lake. For the next hour, there was no talk of Brian. No secrets. No tension. Just two old friends celebrating a new beginning. They talked about college memories. The worst customers at the bar. The professors they would never forget. The moments they almost gave up. "I still can't believe you survived those early morning classes," Ethan teased. Savannah laughed. "Neither can I." "You were always the hardest worker there." She shrugged. "I had no choice." Ethan looked at her. "You know that's not true." Savannah met his eyes. "You could have quit a hundred times and you didn't." His words surprised her. She looked down at her glass. Maybe she had never given herself credit for that. As lunch turned into late afternoon, Savannah realized she was enjoying herself. "Thank you," she said quietly. Ethan smiled. "For what?" "For this." She gestured around them. "I didn't realize how badly I needed a break." "You deserve one." The words were simple. But they meant something. When they finally left the restaurant, Savannah felt lighter than she had in days. They had just reached the parking lot when her phone started ringing. She pulled it out. Lily. Savannah laughed. "Of course." Ethan raised an eyebrow. "What?" "Only Lily calls immediately after a celebration to plan another celebration." She answered. "Lily?" The response came so loudly that Savannah had to pull the phone away from her ear. "WHERE ARE YOU?" Savannah laughed. "We just finished lunch." "Lunch?" Lily sounded offended. "You disappeared after graduation for lunch?" Savannah smiled. "I was invited." "Well, now you're invited somewhere else." Savannah already knew where this was going. "No." "Yes." "Lily..." "No excuses. Everyone is going." "Going where?" "The club." Savannah looked at Ethan. He was already trying not to laugh. "I don't know..." "Savannah." Lily's voice softened. "Come on. This might be the last time we're all together before everyone starts moving away." That made Savannah pause. Because Lily was right. Soon everyone would leave. Jobs. Apartments. New lives. Things would change. She looked toward the parking lot, thinking. Ethan noticed. "What did she say?" Savannah sighed. "She wants us to go to a club." He smiled. "You don't sound excited." "I just graduated. I thought I was done being tired." He laughed. "Maybe you study more if you want to." Savannah looked at him. Then she burst out laughing. "Study? Ethan, I spent four years doing that. I'm finally free." He smiled. "Fair enough." He opened the car door for her. "Then maybe you deserve one night where you don't have to worry about tomorrow." Savannah smiled. Maybe he was right. She turned back to the phone. "Fine, Lily." The scream that followed made her pull the phone away again. "I KNEW IT!" Savannah laughed. "I'll see you soon." She ended the call. Ethan started the car. Neither of them knew that the night ahead would change everything. Because sometimes... the moments that seem like celebrations are the ones that reveal the truth.
