Chapter 19: Back to Earth
The next morning, the mood on the Harbinger was different. Roxan didn't feel like a prisoner anymore. She felt like a person with a plan. A plan that now included a powerful alien partner who hated cheese dip but seemed okay with the concept of messing up enemy planets using messy human food strategies. The quiet respect between them had shifted into a quiet, understanding warmth.
Damon was all business again, back in his full armor, giving orders on the bridge. Roxan stood beside him, watching Earth get bigger on the main screen. The image of the peaceful blue planet filled her with a strange mix of hope and anxiety.
"Ready for the chaos of your home world, Partner?" Damon asked her in a quiet voice, a private joke just between them. He didn't look at her, keeping his focus on the main display, but the softness in his voice was a new thing Roxan was starting to get used to.
Roxan smiled. "Ready for the order of things, Partner."
General Varrick, standing nearby, stared at them both, clearly confused by their words. The general was still mad about the cheese dip plan for Zorp-7. Roxan liked that they confused the General. It was a small win that made the heavy reality of occupation a little easier to handle.
The shuttle ride down was fast. They landed at the UN building again. This time, there was no crowd, just a few guards and one very loud person.Desmond.
He ran up to the shuttle as the door opened, his shiny tuxedo catching the morning sun. "Damon! The Zorp-7 mission is ready! I packed my best suit and three tubs of the 'gooey stuff'!"
Damon ignored him completely, walking past him as if he were air. Roxan had to pull her father away.
"Dad, stop. The King is busy being King."
"He looked busy in a good way, you know? Excited about the dip!" Desmond said, adjusting his suit.
Roxan rolled her eyes. "Go to the transport ship, Dad. Your job is waiting. Kaelen will show you where the Zorp diplomatic papers are."
After finally getting rid of her father, Roxan and Damon went to the main meeting room. They had a new job today: talking to Earth's leaders about the new rules.
The leaders looked scared when Damon walked in. He looked like the scary King again, cold and silent in his armor. The room became quiet the moment he entered.
"We have new rules for the Earth's environment," Roxan started, standing next to Damon, feeling the weight of his presence. "The sss is safe. No one touches it. We will use the other areas for the things we need, but we will make sure the planet stays healthy."
The leaders looked at each other, relief on their faces. They were happy about the sss but scared to ask questions.
One brave woman, the leader of a big country, stood up. "Queen Roxan, what about our freedom? Our right to make our own choices?"
Damon tensed up next to Roxan. She felt his arm get hard. He hated words like "freedom" and "choices". To him, they meant "mess" and "waste" and "rebellion".
Roxan put a hand on his metal arm, calming him down. It was a small gesture, but it meant a lot. She was protecting him now, just as much as he protected her.
"You still have choices," she said to the woman. "You can follow the new rules, keep your planet healthy, and live. Or you can fight the rules, lose your homes, and die. The choice is yours."
It was a cold answer, using Damon's own logic, but it was fair in a Xylosian way. It was efficient. The woman sat down, thinking hard about the choice she was given.Damon looked at Roxan. He was impressed by how she used his logic but made it sound like it made sense in the human world. It was a perfect blend of order and chaos.
"Good job, Partner," he whispered to her later in the quiet hallway. They were alone. The power was off in this part of the building because the guards were working in the other area, a small, dark moment just for them.
Roxan leaned against the cold wall. "You liked that, didn't you? My evil side coming out."
"It was very efficient," Damon said. He leaned in close. His face was only inches from hers. The hall was dark and silent. The air was thick with the feeling between them.
"We are doing well," Roxan said, her heart beating fast again.
"Yes," Damon agreed. "The data points to a successful partnership."
He reached out, his hand touching her cheek again, the same soft touch from the study on the ship. The war was outside these walls. In here, it was just them and this new, confusing feeling.
He moved his thumb along her jaw. Roxan leaned into his hand, closing her eyes for a second. She trusted him now, a crazy feeling after everything that happened.
Damon didn't rush. He never rushed. He just stood there, his hand on her face, looking at her with a look that made her feel special and wanted. The moment hung there, a quiet promise of what was to come.
"We should get back to the meeting," Roxan whispered, even though she didn't want to move an inch.
"Yes," Damon agreed, but he didn't move his hand for a long time. "Efficiency requires we finish the meeting."
He pulled his hand back slowly, the loss of his touch leaving a warmth in her heart. They walked back to the bright meeting room, ready to run the world together. The Demon King and his human Queen, making rules and maybe finding love along the way. The end of the meeting felt like the start of their real story.
