Chapter Seven

2626 Words
It was close those six wolves nearly found her, submersing herself in stream meant the wolves lost her scent and assumed that she must of continued on through the woods. She would need to be careful just in case they looped back. Everyone underestimated her given her young age but she had had a harder life than most and learned skills that no one else in her family had. Once she felt is was safe she climbed the small bank out of the stream. She started walking back towards where she had been camped out. She was shivering from the cold of the stream knowing that when she got back to the camp she would be able to start a fire safely keeping herself warm and not alerting the wolves to her location. These were not the first wolves she had encountered. She was used to having to hide from Rogues as she randomly came across them when she had been trekking to the Big River Pack Lands. Until recently she didn't realise that he wasn’t an ordinary eight year old girl. Unknown to her she was Orla Signa daughter of Aoiffe Signa the High Priestess of the Blue Moon Coven. Her Mother had been a witch killed in a Vampire attack on their coven when Orla was only 6 months old. Luckily for Orla her Aunty Helva had come to see her and taken her away a day before the attack had happened. She hadn’t had any other family and did not know who her Father was. Her Aunty Helva wasn’t able to take care of her full time so she was put into an orphanage for human children. As Orla grew up thinking she was human she moved around frequently all over the states from foster home to foster home. As her powers developed she found that families she was housed with never wanted to keep her as they were always terrified when a child in their care couldn’t explain how she could move items without touching them or change the appearance of her hair whenever she felt scared. However no matter where she ended up though her odd Aunty Helva always managed to keep a track of her. At her last foster home she had lasted there for nearly 2 years. She had learned to hide her quirks so not to scare the family. Her healing gift began to show itself when she turned seven which was good for her as the foster family liked to use her as a punch bag, regularly. They kept her in the basement of their home despite the fact that she had a lovely ‘staged’ bedroom with the rest of the family upstairs for when the city officials came to inspect. The family had noticed that she healed quickly and just assumed that they were hitting her hard enough. She managed to keep to herself biting her tongue when she wanted to scream at them, she felt powerless and unwanted. She was so deeply unhappy. Whenever she would see her Aunt Helva she always begged her to take her with her. Helva always told her it just wasn’t time yet. She never understood when that right time would be. Would she wait until this family finally put her in hospital or worse in the morgue? A week before her 8th Birthday she had started having visions. There were frequent and changed. The first night she had a vision she had felt a bad headache coming on. She finished her duties in the kitchen at the foster family and took herself down into the odd comfort of the dark basement. As her headache had worsened to point of making her cry she passed out. Aunty Helva turned up to see her on her 8th Birthday. She found Aunty Helva sitting on her cot in the basement with her warm smile on her face after Orla had come downstairs once her house duties were completed. Orla ran to her Aunt hugging her tightly to her. She was praying that this time would be the time she would take away her from this foster family. Orla winced as Helva patted her back. Noticing the child wincing Helva turned Orla round and checked under her shirt to see fresh cuts from being whipped. Helva turned Orla back round with tears in her eyes. “My Child I did not know that they were beating you. How dare they. They clearly don’t know who you are or what you will be capable of. Which one of them did this to you” “Aunt don’t worry this isn’t the worst they have ever done. Its healing, still a bit stingy but it will heal” “Who did this”, Orla was amazed as her Aunts eyes started to change as though there was a storm brewing in her Iris's. “The older boy did it under his Fathers instructions” “Pack your things Orla, your coming with me. I will be back in a minute sweetie. Whatever you hear upstairs do not come up. I will come down and get you. Promise me child” “Y..y…yes Aunt. Your really going to take me away from here? Are you going to take me away to another foster family?” “No, its time. Just wait here” As Orla was packing away her belongings as quickly as she could into a small duffle bag, she could hear a commotion upstairs. The Father was shouting at her Aunt. Then there was loud banging and some screams. Orla stopped and shrunk back. She wanted to go upstairs and see what was going on. Sneaking up the stairs she gently cracked open the door and covered her mouth to cover her silence herself when she saw her Aunty levitating in front of the family. They were pinned down under an invisible weight unable to move. Orla watched as her Aunt swished her finger in a circle motion and the Father rotated so that he was face down. Another finger movement and his shirt was torn off his back. Orla noticed the levitating belt above his back. As the belt raised to whipped across his back Orla couldn’t contain herself anymore pushing the door open wide and running towards her Aunt. “NOOOOOOOOOO” Her Aunt turned her head to meet Orla’s gaze and her eyes returned to normal, “Child they deserve worse than this, they are only getting a small punishment. They should be glad I am not ripping them limb from limb” “Aunt, please no, I don’t want there hurt on my mind. Just take me away from here” Taking in her nieces body language her heart hurt, she hated what these monsters had done to her but equally she didn’t want to cause the child more trauma. She kept the family held down with the invisible weight, went to her niece and helped her collect the remainder of her belongings and left. Wiping the families memory of Orla and Helva’s presence so that there would be no one tracking them. She could sense the power in Orla and was sure that the Dark Powers were already hunting for Orla to try to claim her for themselves. Shew alked calmly with Orla to a quiet area nearby and turned to her to find Orla shaking. “Are you cold my child?” “No Aunt Helva, I am ….. How did….What are….” “Are you afraid of me?” “Nnnnnn …… no I don’t think so” “Good, just know I will protect you with my life and have a lot more tricks than those you have seen up my sleeve” Winking at her niece, Helva felt Orla’s energy start to calm and her shaking visibly stopped. “I need you to hold hands with me and trust me my love, I am taking you somewhere very safe where no one will hurt you and I can explain everything to you” Nodding her head at her Aunt she took her hand. Looking up at her Aunt’s calm smiling face she suddenly felt the world turn on its head before it righted itself again in a heavily wooded area. Looking around she quickly realised they had gone somewhere. Even stranger she thought to herself was that she wasn’t freaking out, she felt the opposite calm and intrigued. After looking round the cosy cottage that her Aunt Helva had taken her to Orla was sitting drink a hot cup of something her Aunt had given her to help with the healing of her whipping wounds on her back. Her Aunt began to tell her the amazing stories of her mother Aoiffe Signa, who she was, what she had achieved and then began to unveil that the stories of werewolves, vampires, fairies, warlocks, witches and shifters were not fairy tales. There was a whole world that humans could not see or understand but it was there. This world had a much darker side where life was taken at the blink of an eye over food, land and alliances. There were rules with councils but the councils were species specific. Orla had always felt out of place in the human world especially after her powers had started to show themselves. Given that she now knew she was a daughter to a High Priestess everything was making more sense and she felt as though a puzzle piece had been handed to her about her life. Orla went on to share with her Aunt about her visions. She explained a week ago she had started having visions which kept coming to her. She was saw herself in her vision looking at signs for Red River of the North and then walking through big iron gates with “Big River Pack” above the gates towards a young woman with blonde hair and a big smile on her face. Helva answered her questions regarding the vision and explained that Orla had been blessed with once in a generation powers. These powers could be for Light or Dark, it would depend on the choices she made growing up. Helva did not want to burden the child with the fact that the prophecy told of a child who could destroy all of the unknown world if she made the wrong choice. She could feel the power of Light in Orla, but she could also sense the small piece of Dark within her swirling angrily around. Smiling warming at Orla Helva went on to explain that she knew the Luna at the Big River Pack and her own vision she had previously and what this had meant. She knew the next place Olra needed to go was the Big River Pack, she also knew that she needed to show the young witch how to use her powers that she currently had. Orla awoke sweating from another vision. This one had been recurring nightly now for a few days. She had a nagging feeling every time she woke up that she needed to get away. But she did not want to leave her Aunt. She was fearful if she left she would never be able to find her again. She felt safe and happy there with her Aunt but had this yearning and pull to move on and get closer to Red River of the North. In her vision she had been kidnapped and was bound with a sack over her head. She never saw the kidnapper but the smell of raw sewage was always there. She could never get the bindings off and after a being carried for a small distance she would hear and feel a low growl from  what she guessed was a werewolf. The kidnappers would scream as the wolf took them out and eventually the wolf carefully pulled off the sack over her head and bit through the ropes binding her not leaving a mark on her. The wolf was the biggest she had ever seen, it was dark grey in colour with beautiful golden eyes. She never felt scared of the wolf only safe. The vision always ended as the wolf walked away and started to change back to its human form. Given the size of the wolf she assumed it was an Alpha. She knew Alpha wolves tended to be black or dark in colour. She never had a clear view of the human form as she lost consciousness in her vision. Helva knew it was time to let the girl go and complete her journey to the Big River Pack solo. Orla had to do the journey by herself in order for her to trust in herself and her abilities to keep herself safe. Orla now found herself a few weeks on hiding out near the Big River Pack. She wanted to scope out the pack first before she made herself known. She wanted to see if you she could find the Alpha Wolf she had seen in her visions as she felt that wolf would be friendly. All she had encountered so far were Rogues who wanted to kill her or kidnap her. Thankfully her powers had helped her escape them a few times but she had now learned how to hide and evade them. She had overheard a group of them a few nights ago in a camp that they were sent to kidnap a young female wolf. She kept a close eye on them and went back to see if they had captured the wolf,  so she could set it free of course! They never returned to the camp. Orla had gotten braver and started getting closer and closer crossing through the pack fence line as she started to feel a pull to the pack. She had found some houses on the outskirts near a river and watched a young female wolf from the cover of the woods. There was something familiar about that wolf but she couldn’t understand why. The wolf turned round and looked straight at covering she was hiding in. Holding her breath she kept watching as the werewolf turned round and went into a house. Orla was feeling tired so she found a nice high tree to curl up and sleep in, making sure that she was wearing her pendant to cover her scent so she could try and watch this werewolf more. She felt at peace here, safe and content. When she awoke she knew she had been sleeping for a long time. Refreshed and ready she sensed the werewolf was no longer at the house. The pull she felt had her climbing down out the tree, staying in the shadows heading for another part of the pack lands. Calmness fell over her as she found the young werewolf doing some sort of routine on what looked like a flat work area where the grass was short. She watched mesmerised by the movements and wondered what she was doing. As she watched a very tall and muscular werewolf was making his way to the young female. He also looked young. Maybe this was the dark grey wolf, Orla felt herself getting excited at the prospect. She felt a huge sense of calm washing over her as the two wolves interacted. She hadn't noticed that the two werewolves were looking over in her direction and herd the young male call for guards.
