"What?" Ethan's hands jerked on the steering wheel as he looked at me through the rearview mirror, the shock on his face not yet faded.   But he didn't ask questions. He twisted his wrist, the car arcing into a U-turn and driving away.   "What's going on?" He glanced at the rearview mirror, his voice lowered.   I tightened my arms around the two children and looked out at the sparse trees beyond the car window. Then I shook my head. “I don’t know.”   I closed my eyes briefly.
