After Grandma’s breathing eased, I crouched beside her and asked softly, “Grandma, how do you feel? Is it easier to breathe now?” She looked thinner than before. Her cheeks were sunken. She forced a weak smile. “Get some rest,” I said, putting things away one by one. Then her voice came, faint and exhausted. “Adrian, step out for a moment. I want to talk to Julie alone.” I wanted her to rest first, to save her strength. But Adrian was already leaving without a word. My back ached from standing so long. I pulled a chair over and sat down. “You and William… your bond is broken, isn’t it?” she asked quietly. I opened my mouth to answer, but the firmness in her tone stopped me. Her instincts really were frighteningly sharp. William wouldn’t have told her that much—I was sure of it.
