Then I forced myself back into calm.

I dropped those words and didn’t dare look at Adrian again.
When I went back inside, Ann was supporting William out of the bathroom.
“Julie,” Ann asked, confused, “where did you go just now?”
“Downstairs for water,” I said lightly, even though my heartbeat still hadn’t slowed.
“Since you’re back,” Ann said, glancing at William, “I’ll go. William, get some rest. I’m going back to my room.”
William only nodded and watched her leave.
