Mosi couldn’t help but feel weird since early this morning. He had a hunch that he shouldn’t come to work today, that he should’ve stayed home. However he had never missed a day of work since the day he started and he wasn’t planning on starting today due to an inexplicable feeling.
But at mid-morning he started getting the feeling he was being watched, attentively at that. He felt a cold running down his nape and all the way down his back.
He started sweating more than usual. His work was mainly a physical one. He had always had a good shape and healthy body. Since he was even younger than Teo was now he would exercise with his dad. He had a strong physique and working everyday at the farm had only made him stronger.
With that in mind the extra sweat shouldn’t be related to the work he was doing. The weather was still cool so it wasn’t the weather either. Could it be he was sweating because of this feeling of being watched? Ever since he started working, after Juan, the foreman, taught him everything he was responsible of doing nobody had ever supervised his work.
The people in the farm knew he was the hardest working employee here and left him to his own devices most of the time. They would only bother him if some emergency or something unexpected happened.
He started wondering if he should return to the house and check on Teo.
While Mosi was thinking all this, the old lady was observing him quietly. Immediately after she arrived she realized that this kid couldn’t possibly be the other kid’s father. She started considering the possibilities; could it be a cousin? A previous son of her daughter’s man? A guardian for the kid?
No. If he were a guardian he would most certainly have felt her presence even if only slightly. He should have noticed something was amiss. At that moment when the old lady thought that; was the first time that Mosi turned around and looked directly at the her.
However he couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary and decided to keep on doing what he was doing. Nonetheless he was getting more restless by the minute. The feeling of being observed only got clearer and he was getting more and more nervous about Teo.
This kept going on for a while and he detected the lady’s presence a couple more times. It’s important to note that the lady wasn’t stationary, she kept moving around. Observing him and detailing him. He was a robust looking young man, with a strong musculature, around 1.85m tall, and obvious strength in his body. He had dark bronze skin and black hair with gray eyes. His eyes were most likely the most eye catching part of him. Not because he wasn’t good looking but because they seemed not to belong on his body.
Every now and then he would stop what he was doing and look straight into her eyes. When this happened the third or fourth time the old lady realized it wasn’t luck. He could actually sense her. He could pinpoint where she was with and uncanny precision.
The old lady was unsure how to proceed. Should she make herself visible and talk to him? Should she keep on watching him? Or was it better to go back to the house or the village and wait for him to go home?
He seemed like a very hard-working lad. She could tell he had an enviable potential. His senses were truly remarkable. An older, trained person would not necessarily be able to detect her. And she was even trying her best not to be detected!
At that time while the old lady was thinking all that a deep musical voice sounded.
“Why don’t you come out? You’ve been watching me all morning and it’s almost time for my lunch break.”
She stayed silent and was still unsure how she should react. She really wanted to meet her grandson and she understood this person had the power to decide. Not that she couldn’t kill him; he was obviously really weak compared to her. But things have a proper way to be done and the energies involved influence in great measure what may and may not happen. A very confident voice sounded once more.
“I know you are there. At first I wasn’t sure, but now I am. You should come out now. I’m going to sit down and eat and would like to not be interrupted during my meal.”
At this moment the old lady knew she had no choice but to make an appearance, or at least answer back.
“Would you rather eat first and talk later or you’d prefer to talk first and eat later?”
For the first time in the morning the face of this young man showed a notorious variation in emotion. He went from surprised to scared, worried, and finally a poker face once more. The old lady was distracted and didn’t notice these lightning fast changes.
Mosi was speechless. He couldn’t believe that there actually had been someone nearby. But he was certain that there was no one visible close to him. Is it a ghost? Something akin to a ghost? It can talk clearly and answer back. It has a woman’s voice. Could it be my mother? Is Teo alright? I should probably run back home after I finish my lunch. This hunch I had is definitely something.
“I don’t mind particularly. I guess we could talk while I eat as well. Since you are here and already admitted it why won’t you come out?”
Mosi walked over to the shade of a tree. On the tree’s branches was his lunchbox, he grabbed it and sat down on the roots. He organized his meal and before he started eating he asked,
“Are you hungry? Would you like to eat a little? I could share the meal I brought for myself with you. Since we are going to speak in the meantime I might as well not eat alone.”
The old lady was flabbergasted. This kid is also incredibly smart! Is he offering to share his meal on purpose? Or is it just a coincidence? He surely knows what sharing a meal implies to magically and spiritually developed beings.
She had no choice other than to make an appearance anyway so she decided she might as well eat a little while they spoke.
“I’d very much appreciate if you shared some with me. Let’s talk and eat!”
While she was saying that a lady that appeared to be in her 50’s appeared out of the blue. Mosi was surprised but he managed to keep calm. He already knew for certain something or someone was nearby the moment they answered so he thought it best to pretend he knew all along.
“So, are you going to introduce yourself? I guess you know who I am or you wouldn’t have been spying on me all morning. In any case I’m Mosi, and you are?”
While he was speaking he proceeded to divide his meal into equal shares using both plastic containers. He kept the one that seemed to have a little bit more and proceeded to offer the other one to lady.
She was in luck since he always had a spare plastic fork in his lunchbox in case the one he was using broke while eating. So she received a container half filled with delicious smelling food and a fork to eat it with.
“I’m Elisa and it’s a pleasure to meet you Mosi. This smells amazing! Did you cook it?”
“Hi Elisa, why have you been watching me all morning? I hope you enjoy the meal, and yes, I did cook it this morning before coming to work.”
He started eating after saying that while he waited for her to answer. In any case keeping a conversation while eating is a kind of art that he is not very familiar with since he ate most of his meals alone.
“Mmm, this chicken rice is truly delicious and the fried plantains are just perfect.”
She kept eating while she thought how to tell him he was Carmen’s mother. Should she simply say it? She still didn’t know what this kid’s connection was to her grandkid.
“You are in luck that I prepared fried plantains. That uses up too much oil. I usually bake or parboil them. It’s healthier and cheaper”
“Well then I guess I came on an auspicious day! You see, I’m Carmen’s mother. I went to her house to meet her kid but apparently she wasn’t home. Her kid told me that if I wanted to go in the house I had to meet you first and get your permission. That’s why I’ve been watching you all morning.”
Mosi was surprised to say the least. Never had his parents mentioned grandparents. He always assumed they were dead. Could she actually be his grandma? Why would his mother never mention her? She apparently doesn’t know my parents are dead and she doesn’t know who I am either. I guess it’s best if I give as little information as possible while finding out as much as possible.
Mosi’s parents had taught him ever since he was a little kid, to never trust strangers. “When trusting strangers you are inviting bad things to happen to you.” Is something both his parents had told him repeatedly.
