Chapter 4

1526 Words
Drake's heart was filled with anger. The girl before him was the one he'd thought about for countless years. But now, she was being bullied by these scumbags, and it was happening right in front of him. What about before? No matter what Cheryl's life had been like in the past, now that he was here. Drake vowed in his heart, 'I will never let Cheryl suffer this kind of humiliation again. I'll make those who bully her pay dearly!' Drake's face showed his heartache as he gently pulled Cheryl into his arms, softly patting her back. He said, "I'll take care of this. You just stay home and wait for good news." Leaning against Drake's broad chest, Cheryl felt his breath, and for the first time, she experienced an overwhelming sense of security. But just as Drake was savoring this moment, Cheryl suddenly seemed to recall something. She broke free from his embrace and anxiously said, "No! You can't go after Ashley. It will get you killed." Cheryl knew that the Sanchez family had been doing shady things for years, and Drake was just a retired soldier with no background. Someone like him could never stand up against the Sanchez family. Now that Cheryl had married this "murderer," she had no reason to inherit the Sanchez family's fortune. After all, who would let someone whose husband was a murderer inherit their wealth? Moreover, Cheryl had already been dismissed from the company, so she posed no threat to Ashley now. Although Drake had humiliated Ashley at the wedding, as long as he stayed home, Ashley wouldn't come after him for revenge. Forcing a small smile, with red-rimmed eyes, Cheryl said to Drake, "It's just a job. It's fine. I'll start looking at other companies right away." After saying this, Cheryl took a deep breath, walked over to the desk, opened her computer, and began browsing job search sites. Drake watched her back, filled with pity. Such a "goddess fallen to earth" was persecuted by these scumbags to the point where she accepted everything thrown at her. Drake's heart was filled with fury. He said nothing. But now, the only thing he could do was make those who bullied Cheryl wish they were dead. *** At the Sanchez Corporation building, Ashley was sitting in the general manager's office, a smug look on her face as she reviewed a proposal in her hands. Now that she had gotten rid of Cheryl, the creep, no one in the Sanchez Corporation could outrank her. But that alone wouldn't guarantee her the position of heir to the Sanchez family business. After all, Ashley hadn't produced any substantial results. However, with Cheryl out of the picture, this opportunity had fallen into her lap. The project Cheryl had been in charge of recently was now in Ashley's hands. As long as she could close this deal, the Sanchez family's matriarch would surely look at her with newfound respect! Without any hesitation, Ashley confidently took the proposal and headed to the Hargold Group building. "I'm Ashley from the Sanchez Corporation. I'm here on behalf of Sanchez Corporation to sign the deal with Harold Gold," she said arrogantly to the receptionist. "Ms. Sanchez, I'm sorry, but I don't see any appointment for you in our system. I'm afraid Mr. Gold doesn't meet with anyone without an appointment," the receptionist replied with a polite smile. Hearing this, Ashley frowned, displeasure clear on her face. "Look carefully! I'm Ashley, the general manager of Sanchez Corporation! Sanchez Corporation and Hargold Group are about to close a huge deal. Do you understand the responsibility you'll bear if you delay this?" "I apologize, Ms. Sanchez. Mr. Gold has instructed us that only Ms. Cheryl Sanchez from Sanchez Corporation is allowed to come up. No one else," the receptionist calmly responded, maintaining a faint smile. "You!! What do you mean?!" Ashley exploded in anger. 'What does she mean by this? Why can Cheryl go up without an appointment, but I need one?' The more Ashley thought about it, the angrier she became. She already looked down on receptionists, but now she was being blocked by them, and they even had the nerve to mention the person she hated most—Cheryl Sanchez! With a cold snort, Ashley declared, "Hmph! I'm going up now. Let's see who dares stop me!" She turned and headed toward the building's entrance gate. Just then, a deep voice sounded from behind her. "Are all the people from Sanchez Corporation this rude? Causing trouble in our Hargold Group? This little project isn't enough of a reason for you to act out here!" The speaker was Mr. Gold, full name Harold Gold, but everyone called him Hargold. As soon as Ashley heard his voice, a forced smile appeared on her face as she turned around. "Oh, Mr. Gold, you misunderstood me! I was just joking with them. This project may seem small to you, but it's very important to Sanchez Corporation. That's why I brought the contract to you personally." Mr. Gold frowned slightly and said coldly, "Ashley, you've got it wrong. When did I say I was going to sign a contract with your Sanchez Corporation?" Ashley was stunned, stammering, "But... but... Mr. Gold, didn't Cheryl already discuss the contract with you?" "Yes, she did," Mr. Gold nodded slightly. "But the contract is to be signed with Cheryl." Ashley's face flushed red, then turned pale. 'I'm the general manager of Sanchez Corporation, the Sanchez family matriarch's favorite granddaughter! And yet, in Mr. Gold's eyes, I'm still less important than that wretched Cheryl?' "Mr. Gold..." Before Ashley could finish, Mr. Gold interrupted her. "This project will only be signed with Cheryl. You can go back to where you came from." With that, Mr. Gold walked into the building, leaving Ashley standing there, stunned. As she came to her senses, Ashley gritted her teeth and muttered under her breath, "That d*mned Cheryl! She won't leave quietly even after being fired. That wretched b*tch!" Since becoming the general manager of Sanchez Corporation, Ashley had never suffered such humiliation. And now, she blamed it all on Cheryl. She would make sure Cheryl suffer next time! *** At the Sanchez residence, Sabrina was in the study reviewing the company's reports. Suddenly, Ashley rushed in, clearly in a panic. Seeing this, Sabrina reprimanded her softly, "Why are you acting so rashly? What kind of behavior is that?" Feeling wronged, Ashley began, "Mom, I went to Hargold Group today to sign the contract, but Harold said he would only sign with Cheryl. If I hadn't run into him at the entrance by chance, I wouldn't have even seen him today!" Upon hearing this, Sabrina was furious. "Do you know how much the matriarch cares about this project? If you mess this up, do you still want to keep your position as the general manager? Since Mr. Gold has already said so, why haven't you gone to find Cheryl yet?" Nodding repeatedly, Ashley quickly replied, "Yes, yes, I'll go find Cheryl right now." Although Cheryl had been dismissed by Ashley, for the sake of this project, Ashley no longer cared about that. After all, once the project was signed, she could always get rid of Cheryl again. Soon, Ashley arrived at Cheryl's place. As she glanced around at the surroundings, Ashley frowned slightly, worried that the dirty environment could stain her clothes. Knock, knock, knock—a series of knocks sounded at the door. "I'm coming. Who is it?" With the sound of the door creaking open, Cheryl saw Ashley standing there and was momentarily stunned. She quickly collected herself and coldly asked, "What are you doing here?" Seeing this, Ashley smiled and said, "Isn't it normal for relatives to visit each other?" "It was just a misunderstanding that the company let you go. Cheryl, I'm here today to give you a chance to return to the company! The project with Mr. Gold needs you to handle it, so don't waste this opportunity!" Upon hearing this, Cheryl was filled with anger. Her whole body trembled with emotion. Seeing Cheryl remain silent, Ashley grew impatient and shot back, "Cheryl, don't be ungrateful. Not just anyone can work in Sanchez Corporation!" "Agree to this and get Mr. Gold to sign the deal, or else—" "Or else what?" Just then, Drake came and spoke up as he stood by Cheryl's side. He glanced at Ashley, who was looking smug, and naturally raised his right hand. Slap! The sound was sharp and clear, and everyone present was stunned, especially Ashley. A fresh handprint had appeared on Ashley's left cheek. Drake said calmly, "If you're asking for a favor, you should act like it. Didn't your family teach you that?" "You!" Ashley covered her left cheek, listening to Drake's mocking tone, her anger rising. But then she remembered that this man was a retired soldier, and there was even talk of him having killed someone. Instantly, she calmed down and reminded herself, 'He's a madman. What matters now is getting the contract signed!' Stepping forward, Ashley addressed Cheryl, "Cheryl, are you really not going to seize this opportunity?"
